Chapter 15:Shadows of the Silent City

SHATTERED Fears795 words~4 min read

As the group settled into their temporary shelter within the city, the lingering adrenaline of their encounter with the monsters began to fade. The night was quiet, but there was an undeniable sense of discomfort hanging in the air. The shadows stretched longer than they should, and the flickering of the nearby fire cast eerie shapes on the walls, making the city feel even more unfamiliar and unsettling.

After the girl had used her blood to eliminate the wave of monsters, the group was left in stunned silence. They’d just witnessed an incredible display of power, but none of them knew what to make of it. Jake was the first to recover from the shock. His mind raced with questions. How had she done that? What exactly was her ability? And why had she used such a drastic measure?

But before Jake could ask any of his questions, the male guard stepped forward, his face stern and his tone even more so.

“There’s no need for questions right now,” he said calmly, though there was an edge of finality in his voice. “It’s late. Go to sleep. We can talk about this in the morning.”

Jake hesitated. He could feel the weight of his unanswered questions, but he also knew that pressing for answers right now might be pointless. The guards had made it clear that tonight wasn’t the time to talk. There was an unspoken understanding in the air, one that told Jake that whatever was going on, they weren’t ready to hear all of it yet.

Mei exchanged a glance with him, her eyes full of curiosity and unease, but neither of them said anything further. They had come this far together, and they knew the only way to survive was to trust the situation, even if something didn’t feel right.

Stolen from its rightful place, this narrative is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

“Fine,” Jake muttered, lying down on the floor of the shelter. But sleep wouldn’t come easily. His mind kept racing—wondering what had just happened, what it all meant, and whether they could trust the guards. But his questions were going to have to wait.

The night dragged on in tense silence. Just as they were beginning to settle in, however, something changed.

A heavy presence descended over the group. It wasn’t a monster, nor was it anything they could see. It was a feeling—one that pressed against their senses, a vast weight in the air. It was as if the very ground had shifted beneath them, and a force far beyond anything they had encountered had just brushed against them.

Jake’s body went rigid, and the others froze as well. Mei looked around, her hand hovering over her weapon, eyes wide with unease. Ethan sat up, his chest heaving with the effort to remain calm. Ava, who had been quiet and reflective, now stared at the walls, sensing something they couldn’t quite define.

This feeling—it was unmistakable. The presence of something ancient, something almost divine. A god—or something close to it—was near. It was powerful, primal, and it seemed to reach out, brushing against them with an awareness that made their skin prickle.

Jake didn’t move. His heart thudded painfully in his chest, and his breath felt shallow. Whatever this was, it wasn’t something he had prepared for. He had felt dangerous forces before, but this? This felt different.

The presence lingered for only a moment, then receded, but the weight in the air remained. It wasn’t gone. Not fully.

“What was that?” Mei whispered, her voice trembling. She was looking around the room as if expecting something to jump out at her.

Before Jake could answer, the male guard spoke again, his tone firm yet calm. “Go to sleep,” he repeated, as though nothing unusual had happened. “There’s no need for further questions. Rest. Tomorrow will bring answers.”

But Jake couldn’t shake the feeling of being watched, of being in the presence of something far greater than they could comprehend. He lay down, but the uneasy feeling stayed with him. He knew he wasn’t going to sleep anytime soon—not with that heavy presence still lingering in the back of his mind.

As the rest of the team settled back into their positions, trying to find some rest, Jake couldn’t help but stare into the darkness. His thoughts were filled with the strange display of power the girl had shown, and now this feeling of being watched by something much more powerful than themselves.

And with that weight pressing on his chest, he couldn’t help but wonder what tomorrow would bring. The night was too quiet, too still. The sense of unease stayed with them, deep and unsettling, as if something was about to change.
