he led me through the sunflower fields. barefoot. the ends of his faded jeans folded up. he knew i love sunflowers. he kept talking about flowers in a low yet manly voice. i remained silent. he stopped and softly warned me every time he saw a thorn in the soil. i wanted to tell him that he was the one who was walking barefoot, not me. instead, i removed my sneakers and kept walking while holding them in my hands.
his lips were not the first thing i noticed about him. what i noticed about him first were his hands. he kept waving them lightly while talking as if he could create the words he was speaking with his hands. and i believed that he was a magician under the pretty hues of sunset. i believed that he had created those sunflowers with his kisses and the colours in the sky were but his hair stoking the breeze. i believed that the small universe in my vicinity at that moment was the creation of his magical waving hands.
then i noticed his eyes. green. deep. but not too deep. just the perfect balance of deep and shallow that allowed me to dive in but also to come back up and breathe every now and then. they blinked and i swear everything was only a dream.
he realized that i was not listening to him. i was too busy noticing his wonders. he stopped talking. my heart stopped beating for a second. my eyes were drawn to his lips. his smile. and i was suddenly upset at the fact that boys are not called beautiful too often. because he was just that. beautiful.
i dropped my sneakers, leaned forward, closed my eyes and brushed my lips against his. he kissed me. i kissed him back. i kissed him while waiting for the taste of paint on his lips. he had to be a painting. i held his hand. i never let it go just so i could know the exact tick of the clock when he would disappear. he must disappear. he was too good to be real. he was just what i wanted. he wasn't real.
but he was. he didn't disappear. no paint came off his lips. no flowers turned to smoke. he was there. kissing me. pouring himself into me. downing his magic into me. he was not going anywhere. he was there. real. actual. my beautiful boy. just what i wanted. and he was not leaving.
so i pulled away, picked up my sneakers and ran as fast as i could, never looking back...
