âShit, Bella, we have been so worried about you. Are you okay?â Ellie asked upon answering her phone.
âYes, Ellie, Iâm feeling great. And I have important information,â I sighed, scared of the backlash.
âWhy? What have you been up to?â she asked sternly.
âMarcus wonât make another move until winter. If you could tell Louisa, that would be great,â I mumbled, noticing the shift in her voice.
She was clearly annoyed.
âYou should come tell her yourself. We thought you might have gotten abducted, to be sacrificed or something. She is furious, by the way, as am I,â Ellie answered, and I could tell that she meant it.
âI canât come to the headquarters for a few days. Iâll get disciplined,â I muttered.
âOh, youâre getting disciplined either way, but Bella⦠What did you do to come across this information? You are still a newbie. You shouldnât be playing with fire,â Ellie scolded.
âI called you, âcause I thought you would be the most chill,â I told her grumpily.
âOh well, you can tell me later,â she sighed.
âIâll come over tonight,â Ellie said before hanging up on me.
Ellie was mad at me, so they must all be pretty angry. I told Erik, feeling worried as I sat down at the table in the kitchen. He had made us spaghetti carbonara.
âThey shouldnât be. Were it not for you, they wouldnât know they are wasting their time and energy trying to find Marcus at this time,â Erik said.
âYou know, something Iâm curious about. If you hate your brother, why havenât you tried to stop him yourself?â I asked.
âI canât. We are of the same blood. If I harm him, Iâll be cursed,â Erik replied.
âI might tell you more someday, but not today.â
âAll right, I guess I can believe that. But why hasnât Damion stopped him? When heâs clearly bad for the entire spellcaster community?â I asked instead.
âDamion likes giving the umbra a hard time. They killed his mother about a thousand years ago,â Erik answered.
âHeâs also not supposed to judge magic as good or bad. Heâs bound to protect magic and spellcasters, not the lives of others,â he explained further.
âI guess it would make complete sense for him to hate us. Why let a few of us into his home, though? He has been so kind to me,â I said, confused.
âI am very curious about that too. Aurora seems to like you a lot, Iâm sure she came to say hi yesterday just to check on you,â Erik told me, looking a little amused.
âIt might have something to do with your magical gift? Although umbra can tap into the arcane, Iâve never met one thatâs bound to it like you are,â he said casually.
I looked at him, surprised.
âWhat do you mean?â I asked.
âWhen you used magic yesterday. I felt your connection to the arcane. You didnât just tap into it, like I said, youâre bound to it. I bet you could learn to speak to it and use magic with the same ease as I do,â he continued, looking at me with great interest, as if heâd thought I already knew this and realized that I didnât.
âBut that canât be possible?â I mumbled, finding it hard to believe.
I knew the arcane was a gateway to corrupt usâhow could I possibly be bound to it? And what would that make me?
âI didnât think so either, since the umbra are bound to the dark, but here you are. If you wish, I could teach you the language. Youâll be able to understand it then. Itâs a rare gift to be able to fully learn it,â Erik offered, eyeing me curiously.
I already did understand it, although he didnât know it. I hadnât known it for long.
It didnât sit completely right with me. It was very confusing and made me nervous.
âYou didnât already know, did you?â I asked, trying not to sound suspicious.
âNo, not until yesterday. You umbra have a way of cutting off your connections to the other dimensions, although I donât know much about that,â Erik confessed.
I wasnât completely convinced he was telling me the whole truth.
âCan you teleport me home, after weâve eaten?â I asked. I needed to process what heâd just told me.
âEllie is coming over.â
Erik chuckled. âNo, I canât. The cigarettes Iâve been leaving are how I teleported into your apartment yesterday. You brought them with you. I could take you to the building though?â Erik suggested.
âBut my clothes, I donât want to bump into a neighbor or someone I know in the dress and heels I wore yesterday. And I canât wear your pants and shoes. They are way too big!â I pointed out.
âIf you dare to trust me with your keys, I can go and leave something new at your place,â Erik suggested.
âFuck! I donât have my keys, or cards, or anything. I really donât want to have to contact my parents,â I said, shocked.
I hadnât realized Erik couldnât teleport us back when we left yesterday.
âCalm down, Bella. I donât need keys. I was just trying to be polite,â Erik said.
âWhatâs the point of not being able to teleport into othersâ homes if you can still get in through a locked door?â I asked.
âWell, anybody can really, apart from vampires,â Erik said with a shrug before he disappeared.
***
âYou could pack some clothes if you want me to bring them back to my place,â Erik said, once he had returned me home to my apartment.
âYeah, sure, it might be a good idea,â I answered, smiling at the thought before doing what he had suggested.
âI donât like this, you going back to your headquarters. I wonder if they know about your connection. If they donât, well⦠Iâm worried,â he sighed, folding his arms while I was packing.
âI have never heard of it before. There are procedures for those who are allowed to use magic. Iâm sure theyâll just have me do whatever it is they do and itâll be fine,â I shrugged.
âIâm not convinced. Iâve known your kind to be cruel, even to their own,â Erik said.
I thought about what Alex had told me about his daughter. Still, she was alive, even though her existence was illegal.
âI think our present Dux Umbra might be kinder than the ones before,â I said thoughtfully while closing the zipper of my weekend bag.
âThere, all packed,â I said.
Erik wrapped his arms around me, hugging me against his chest.
âI hope youâre right. Letâs go make dinner,â he said and kissed my cheek before he let go and headed toward the kitchen.
âSo loving,â I whispered and smiled to myself. It wasnât much like me to feel giddy like this.
âDonât you find it tiresome to always cook for me?â I asked when I joined him in the kitchen.
He was already at work.
âNot in the slightest. I find it adorable that you canât cook but still try to learn,â he teased me, making me blush.
âIâll help,â I mumbled and washed my hands.
It was still kind of fun, learning how to cook with Erik. I was learning, but I still doubted I could pull off any of the things we made by myself.
Luckily, with Erik around, I didnât need to. He loved cooking for me.
We were in the middle of eating our dinner when the bell rang.
âI guess thatâs my cue to leave,â Erik said and grabbed my bag.
He smiled. âText me when I can come back, or if you need help. As I said, Iâm worried.â He kissed me before he vanished.
I was nervous and took a deep breath before I went to open the door.
In truth, I didnât know what kind of energy Ellie would detect from me, and I was scared to find out.
