I was nearingmy office today when Nikki approached from the opposite direction, lookingperturbed.
She stoppedme. âGood day, Mr. Crane! Always a pleasure to see you sir.â
âHi, Nikki! How are you?â I suddenly realized that calling her Nikki was too friendly andfamiliar. âUh, Miss Kurtzman, is it?â
âLost!â
âWhat?â
âI got a wallat home full of degrees and diplomas and I canât find the goddamned canteen.Iâm lost! This building is kinda confusing. They should shoot the designer.â
âI designedit!â
âOops!â shesaid slapping a hand over her mouth. âThere I go again, putting my foot in it.â
âYou saidit!â
âIâm sorry!â
âItâs okay.Donât worry youâll get used to the layout soon enough.â
âNo, I mean,âIâm sorryâ as in âCan you clear something up for me?ââ She frowned and staredat me. âAre you sure you donât know me from somewhere? Have we met somewherebefore that I donât recall? Have I ever done something, besides criticizingyour architectural skills, to earn your disapproval?â
I was amazedat her powers of perception. âWhy are you asking?â
âWell,Steveâ¦Mr. Ferran said that you were very much against having me work atGlobal?â
âSteveâs gota big mouth!â
âThen itâstrue? Why?â
âBecause Iknow what youâre capable of doing.â
âYou thinkIâm incapable?â
âNot at all!I said, âBecause I know what you are capable of doing?ââ
âWhat? Whatâsthat supposed to mean? You hardly know me? Iâve barely been here a week.â Thensuddenly she seemed to realize something. âOh my God! Donât tell me you were atClub 501 on the night I did myâ¦little thing?â
That was amost enlightening declaration. I needed to know more. I lied through my teeth.âThatâs right!â
âLook, thatwas a long, long time ago and Iâd had too much to drink! I was celebrating gettingmy MSc for goodness sakes. Donât tell me youâve never let your hair down alittle? Oh, God, this is so embarrassing.â
She was lyingtoo. Her face hadnât flushed in the least. In fact, I could see by the gleam inher eye that she was proud of herâ¦little thing.
I needed topry some more out of her. âIs that what you call it what you did? âLetting yourhair down a little?ââ
âOkay, I leta little more down than just my hair.â
I twisted thescrew even more. âA little more?â
âAlright, soit was everything! But none of the guys seemed to mind. In fact everybody wascheering me on.â
âEverybody?The girls too?â
âWell, itcertainly seemed that way to me at the time. That is, everybody but you, by thelooks of things?â
âGreat wayfor anâ¦intellectual to reason andâ¦behave?â
âIf you wereso disgusted whyâd you watch?â
âLetâs say itwas more in disbelief than admiration.â
âSo, are yougonna hold that over me for the rest of my life.â
âNo, just forthe rest of your days at Global.â
âThatâscalled, victimization!â
âAnd that wascalled, indecent exposure.â
âThereâsnothing indecent about my body. Iâm proud of every inch.â
I smiled.âAnd that gives you the right to show it off â like that?â
âAfter thatshow, Iâm amazed you even remembered my face?â
I hatedmyself for laughing out loud. âWell, just goes to show where my mind really wasat the time!â
She smiledback. âSo, the unbendable stone man flinches. Weâre human after all? I tell youwhat, why donât you show me where the canteen is and Iâll buy you a coffee?Give me a chance to apologize properly for myâ¦sordid past?â
âYou wannabuy the big boss a coffee?â
âSure, whynot. Thereâs a first for everything. Come mix with the riff raff for awhile.Get to know your workforce from the inside. Who knows, maybe you might evenpick up something about the strike weâre all planning for next week? Itâs aboutunfair victimization of sexy female employees because of past misdemeanors.â
âNo thankyou!â
âWhy not?â
âThe coffeetastes like shit. Thatâs why I got my ownâ¦â
âHow about adrink then?â
âI donâtallow alcohol on the premises.â
âI wasthinking after work?â
âNo thanks.â
âWhy not?â
âIâve alreadyseen what alcohol does to you. What if you suddenly got theâ¦urge again? ThenIâd end up being the embarrassed one when the scandal got to the papers.â
âIâll begood! I promise!â
âIâm afraidCandice wouldnât approve.â Candice was my imaginary lover. The one I alwaysused when it became necessary to discourage persistent woman who could nevertake no for an answer.
âCandice?â
âMy fiancé.â
âYouâregetting married?â
âYou soundsurprised?â
âThe papersand magazines havenât said anythingâ¦â
âYouâvebeenâ¦monitoring my personal life?â
âYep!Everything! Even the scandals!â
âOh, I,uhâ¦respect your candor.â
âNo, relax,itâs not what you think. I decided to do my homework before the interview. Ithought it might beâ¦required reading.â
âWell, if notpersistent, you certainly are thorough.â
âThatâs me;real dedicated. I work hard and I play even harder!â
âYes, weâvealready established that. Youâre aâ¦hard dedicated woman.â
âI may behard on the outside, but thatâs what living in a manâs world will do to you.Inside, Iâm still an old-fashioned, sweet, liquid-centered gal with a womanâsneeds and desires.â
I suddenlyfelt uncomfortably aroused by her unusual metaphor. I quickly asked, âSo, whatexactly is it you do here at Global?â
âI thoughtyou knew?â
âJust becauseIâm the big boss doesnât mean I know everything that happens inâ¦or aroundGlobal. I smiled again.
âI guess youreally arenât gonna let Club 501 go â are you?â
âNope.â
âI assistSteve in his lab. Mostly, Iâm in charge of the primates.â
âI never knewyou had experience with that sort of thing?â
âSee, youdonât know me that well! I got plenty experience in that field; more thanenough to be capable!â
âHow come Meldidnât apply for the job? I was really hoping that sheâ¦â
âMel? Youknow Melanie Edwards? She never told me that you two know each other?â
âWe donât. Ijust knowâ¦of her. I might not know everything in and around Global, but I trymy best. I was expecting to see her file on Steveâs desk as well.â
Nikki quicklymuttered, âShe changed her mind.â
âDid you helpher change it?â
âWhatâs thatsupposed to mean? There you go again?â
âForget it!So, do you like working with a lot of monkeys?â
She smiledmischievously. âSteveâs okay, I guess. A banana or three and heâs quite happy.âI laughed loudly again, and she said, âYou really should try to smile moreoften. It suits you better than that silly weighty demeanor of pride and powerand earnestness.â She narrowed her eyes at me. âWhat were you doing at the 501anyway? Itâs not the sort ofâ¦establishment that most people of yourâ¦â
I avoided thequestion with, âI must tell Steve that one.â
âDonât youdare!â
âHeâs my bestfriend. We donât keep secrets.â
âReally?â
âUh-huh.â
âI wouldnever have guessed?â
âOh, yeah! Hedoesnât know it yet, but Iâm strongly considering giving him a large percentageof the companyâs shares.â
Her narrowedeyes widened large and bright. âYeah? When? What sort of percentage are welooking at?â
âWe?â
âItâs afigure of speech. So?â
âThatâsconfidential information. Not for the common riff raff!â
âFine!Anyhow, if you feel you have to tell him about my little joke, please do it inthe vein it was meant.â
âWhich was?â
âJust afriendly gag. No harm meant.â
âYeah, sure?â
âWhatâs thatsupposed to mean?â
âNothing.â
âDidnât seemlike nothing to me. God, I hate the way you seem to know more about me than Iactually seem to realize. Is there something else about me that you know?â
âIs theresomething else that I should know?â
âWell, Ioffered you the opportunity to get to know me better, but Candice wouldnâtapprove. Candice who, if I may ask?â
âYou may not.Weâre keeping it as hush hush as possible.â
âFine! Well,I wish you and your fiancé all the best then. Are you quite sure I canâtinterest you in just a coffee then?â
âDead sure.âI pointed to the stairwell. âGo down to the next floor. Turn left and keepgoing. You canât miss it. If you find yourself in the parking lot â you did!â
She walkedoff with an unnatural swagger of her hips.
I waited tillshe had disappeared down the stairs before talking to my imaginary lover.âWoof! What an incredible woman! One canât help but admire herâ¦persistence.Candice, honey, I think youâve just saved me, yet again, from the clutches ofone of those terrible harpies.â I pondered a moment before asking, âOh, remindme to make a mental note? The next time I jump back into the past, I want to besure I know exactly which night it is that I need to pay a visit to Club 501?âAfter another short pause I said, âWhat? Of course not! Donât be silly! Iâmjust mildly curious is all.â I walked towards my office. âYou know youâre theonly girl for me. Well, okay, you and Sophia Loren.â I whistled merrily. âWhat?Yes, of course youâll also be going back. It stands to reason, doesnât it?Where I go â you go! Youâre a figment of my goddamned imagination!â
At first Ihad been surprised at Nikkiâs persistent advances. In my first life she had hadeyes for Steve only. Hence the reason for my envy when the Amazon Queen hadchosen to shower him, and only him, with all her undivided attention andaffections.
Onconsidering the matter, the answer to my puzzlement is blaringly obvious â Iâmnow the guy with all the money.
Globalbelongs to me alone!
I guess in myfirst life, Steve, being ten years younger than me, had seemed like the betterof two possible choices.
And, as Ihave already mentioned, I am eternally grateful that I had not been her firstchoice.
Today, shehad seemed to have an indifferent, even contemptuous attitude towards Steve. That was untilâ¦
God, I hopetelling her about the company shares hasnât sent her hunting after the same managain. That would truly be disastrous.
What was Ithinking when I told her that? I had only meant to emphasize mine and Steveâsfriendship, instead I may well have doomed my friend to once again suffer thepain of a scheming, two-timing (In every sense of the word) wife.
I haveliterally seen history repeating itself many times in this new second life, butthat is the one thing that I had hoped weâ¦I could prevent.
It was theonly thing that Steve had asked of me. The only price he had demanded forsaving my life; for helping me return to the past.
And now, ironically, when I could at last have had her for myself, my spurning of heradvances may just have driven her (back) into the arms of the one man that Ihad hoped she would never have even met.
Perhaps fatehas a way of making things happen the way they were meant to be? Yep, just whenyou think youâre over the junkyard fence, fate sneaks up and bites you in thearse.
Itâs obviousthat the man is already infatuated by both her brains and beauty!
My attempt toprevent Nikki being employed at Global has already soured our friendship. Howdo I get rid of her without incurring anymore of Steveâs displeasure?
I gotta dosomething â but what?
What?
