Erika and I have been seeing each other on a regular basis (again). Towhat must be her constant displeasure (She is an expert at hiding her trueemotionsâ¦and nature.), I often meet her after work at the Balmoral.
Willy has taken toâ¦fraternizing with us most frequently, and by nowconsiders himself a part of our littleâ¦clique. That suits me just fine, becausethis time round it has been my intention to have it happen exactly this way.Maybe this time he might not be inclined to screw my woman if he considers us(Him and I) to be good friends. Who knows, maybe the man has a conscience afterall?
Today I arrived at the Balmoral about 5 minutes ahead of Erika.
Willy wiped the counter in front of me and asked, âThe usual?â
âYeah, make Erikaâs as well. Sheâll be here any minute.â
âSure, this must be the first time you got here before her.â
âYouâre very observant, Willy. I wanted to talk to youâ¦alone.â
He seemed delighted at the request. âYeah, whatâs up man?â Then hesmiled. âYou wouldnât be looking for a best man, would you?â
âYouâre getting a bit ahead of yourself, Willy. Letâs not rush things.â Ipulled a $100 bill out of my wallet and waved it under his nose. âIâll putanother one of these in your tip jar if you can answer three movie triviaquestions.â
âIs that all, man?â He seemed disappointed. Then a little more chippersaid, âOkay! Youâre on! Shoot?â
ââIâm gonna make him an offer he canât refuse?ââ
âThe Godfather!â he said swiftly. âNext?â
âThe next was the tagline on a movie poster. Shouldnât be any problem foryou.â
âOkay! Hit me?â
âYou have no idea how much Iâd loveâ¦?â
âThatâs the tagline?â
âNo,â I chuckled before asking, ââIn space no one can hear you scream?ââ
âAlien, man. Too easy! One more. Letâs go!â
âThink very carefully before you answer the last one. Itâs also a postertagline.â
âBring it on, man! Iâm ready for you!â
âBe careful now! Just when you thought it was safe to go back in thewater?â
âJaws, daddyo!â He held out a flat hand. âGive me some skin, and put thatmuthafucker in my tip jar. Hoo-whee!â
âSorry, but you lose,â I said returning the bill to my wallet.
âNo way, man!â he said shocked and surprised. âMaybe youâre thinkingabout Blood Beach, which came long after Jaws, man. Jaws was first toâ¦â
âUh-uh! It wasnât Jaws, Willy. It was Jaws 2!â
âWhat? Yeah, well you knew what I meant, man.â
âDid I? Just as I know you know the difference between Dirty Harry andSudden Impact? I warned you not to answer too quickly.â
âThatâs dirty, man. You tricked me!â
âNo, I warned you.â I smiled mischievously. âForget about the $100. Tellyou what. Iâm going to make it up to you in a really big way.â
âYeah?â
âIâm gonna really make you an offer you canât refuse.â
âYeah?â
âIâm in the negotiating process of trying to purchase The Greatest Bar onEarth.â
âYeah?â
âWell, if the deal goes through, Iâll be needing a manager.â
âYeah?â
âI was hoping youâd take the job?â
âThe manager? Wow, man, that would be cool!â
âYeah, I kinda thought youâd like the idea.â
âShit!â
âWhat?â
âThe manager? I ainât never managed a bar before, man? Sure, my dream isto have my own place one day, butâ¦â
âThatâs okay. I wasnât expecting to throw you in the deep end withoutgiving you some swimming lessons first.â
âYeah?â
âYeah, donât worry, youâll do just fine.â
âThatâs great, man! So, whereâs this bar gonna be.â
âIâm disappointed! Any barman worth his weight in gold knows where TheGreatest Bar on Earth is?â
âYou mean youâre talking about the realâ¦the actual The Greatest Bar onEarth?â
âThe one and only!â
âThat is un-fucking-believable, man. Thatâs gonna cost you a smallfortune?â
âA big one actually. But itâll be a pretty sound investment,â I saidcalmly. âSo donât be fucking it up?â
âI need to sit down, man!â He did. Then he suddenly realized. âShit, thatmeans Iâll have to move to New York!â
âIs that going to be a problem?â
âIs what going to be a problem?â asked Erika sitting down next to me. Sheleaned over and kissed me.
âMoving to New York,â said Willy.
âWhoâs moving to New York?â
âMe. Maybe?â
âWhat?â She was unable to conceal her displeasure. âWhy? No!â
âWhatâs wrong?â I asked innocently. âWhy not?â
She ignored me and spoke to Willy. âWhy do you wanna go to New York?â
âI got a very good business proposition.â
âFrom whom?â
âMoi,â I said fluttering my eyelids.
âYou? Why? What business proposition?â
âIâm helping Willy to realize his dream. Itâll take him forever to getthere if he stays here at the Balmoral.â
Willy gave me his support. âIâm going to be the manager of a bar. Managermeans better pay.â
âOf course,â I added. âMuch better pay! He wonât get tips anymore, butthat will be small change compared to the salaâ¦â
âDo you really want to do this, Willy?â she asked glaring at him.
âYeah,â he answered timidly. âI guess I do?â
âYou do, hey? You didnât think about first discussing it withâ¦firstthinking it over properly and thoroughly?â
âItâs a once in a lifetime opportunity,â he said regaining some bravado.
I gave Willy my support. âThatâs for sure. Only a fool wouldnât jump atthe opportunity.â
If looks could kill, Erika would have decapitated me then and there. Shegave Willy the same stare before asking, âAre you quite positive about this,Willy Newood? Do you really want to run off to New York?â
âHey!â I said lightly. âItâs okay! Weâll still see plenty of him. I makeplenty business trips to New York each year.â
There was a very slight improvement to her irritability as she asked,âYou do?â
âSure, in fact Iâll be doing a few business deals there next month.â
âThatâs you â not me!â
âI never knew you liked Willy so much.â
âI love you, Cornelius Crane, but Iâve known Willy much longer. We have aspecial friendship.â
âSpecial?â
âItâs not like you may think. So no need to get jealous or anything, okay? Willy is, and always will be a dear friend to meâ¦to both of us, I hope?â
âOf course, why else would I be offering him the business opportunity ofa lifetime?â
âHey,â said Willy. For a moment I could almost swear that his eyes went alittle watery. âI love you guys. Both of you! Youâre my two best friends on theface of this planet. I mean it, man.â
âExcuse me if I skip the group hug, Willy!â snarled Erika. âSomehow, Iâmjust not in the mood tonight.â
I decided that it would be most civil of me to give them a little momenttogether. âExcuse me, ladies, but I feel the urge to shake the dew from mylily. In the famous words of General Douglas MacArthur, âIâll be back.ââ
âUh-uh,â said Willy. âArnold Schwarzenegger in The Terminator.â
âI stand corrected! Was that part 1 or 2?â
âBoth of them. The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day.â
âI like the sound of that second one â Judgment Day. It has a nice ringto it. A sort of grimâ¦inevitability.â I pointed a finger at Willy and made aclicking sound. âYou sure know your flicks, Willy. Wonder how you get to see somany between all the women?â
âWhat women?â blurted Erika.
âIâm sure a good-looking guy like Willy here must have them lined up on aplatter every night.â I slapped the counter. âWilly the stud, I want to see afresh whisky standing here when I get back.â Then I pointed towards the gents.ââOnce more unto the breach.ââ
âStar Trek: DS9!â said Willy. âSeason seven â episode seven!â
I glared at him. âSometimes, Willy, you scare the bejesus out of me.â Ipointed yet again. âOnce more into the bleach. Marilyn Monroe in GentlemenPrefer Blondes or was it The Seven Year Itch.â
Erika managed a slight chuckle, but Willy said, âI never heard that one, man.â
âForget about it, Willy.â I moved off. ââI came through and I shallreturn.â Back to the Future!â
I gave them a good ten minutes, and they were still at each otherâsthroats when I got back.
The last words I heard Erica say was, ââ¦if I find out you been screwingaround with any of those Big Apple slutsâ¦â She stopped talking as I sat down.
âHey?â I queried eyeing the empty counter in front of me. âI thought Isaid I wanted a fresh drink waiting for me?â
âSorry, man,â apologized Willy. âComing right up.â Nobody said anotherword till he placed the drink in front of me. âSorry, man.â
I declared, âI have another surprise announcement to make.â
âAny more surprises like that, and I may just slit my wrists,â mumbledErika.
âYouâre gonna love this. Trust me. Itâs gonna be very romantic.â
âYeah?â her tone was skeptical.
âI was sitting on the can thinking thatâ¦â
âYou had a romantic thought sitting on the can? Men! Typical!â
âHey, thatâs why we sometimes refer to it as The Think-Tank. We squeeze alot of our best ideas out while squeezing outâ¦â
âPlease, spare me the gory details! Just skip to the chase!â
âI want you both to join me next month in New York. All expenses paid.â
âThatâs romantic?â
âI need for Willy to have a look over the bar he might be managing.â
âMight?â
âThe deal hasnât been finalized yet.â
There was suddenly a remarkable improvement in her disposition. âSo itâsnot a done-deal yet?â
âNo! Didnât Willy tell you?â
âNo!â she said glaring over at him again. Then asked, âSo why do you wantme along as well?â
âI was hoping we could have some fun together. All work and no play, makes Cornelius a dull boy.â
âThe three of us?â
âI was thinking more along the lines of just us two. We can hire ababysitter for Willy.â
âYeah, I bet heâd love that? An eighteen year-old blonde with bigâ¦â
âWould you forget about Willy for a moment? Iâve been gathering thecourage to ask you something.â
âWhat?â
âLetâs just say itâs also aâ¦business proposition. Well, sort of.â
âYeah?â
âIt needs the proper setting; the proper atmosphereâ¦ambiance. All thatsort of thing. Three would definitely be a crowd.â
âUh-huh?â she said with a mischievous grin. âAnd would this businessproposition have something to do withâ¦â
âJust shut up and drink up! To say anymore wouldâ¦spoil it.â
âIâll have to put in leave. When next month?â
âThatâs more like it.â
âI wouldnât miss it for the world.â
I pulled out a little notebook and checked the dates. âWeâll fly on themorning of the 10th and return on the afternoon of the 12th.â
âSo short?â
âI donât want to make any trouble for you at your work?â
âDonât worry about that. I know how to handle old Bill Skinner.â
âGreat!â I checked again. âI suppose I could cancel my meeting back hereon the 13th. That would give us till the afternoon of the 16th. Thatâs almost afull week.â
âGreat! You did say all expenses paid?â
âYou can both leave your credit cards at home. Cornelius Crane will seeto all your needs.â
âSounds wonderful! And wherever and whenever possible, Iâll see toyours.â She winked.
âIâm a man - I only have one!â
âIâm a woman - I know!â
We both laughed.
