Chapter 820
âFirst, letâs go downstairs for dinner. After we eat, Iâll tell you,â Gabriel said.
Jane scowled. âGabriel, Iâm not in the mood for jokes!â
Gabriel looked at her with a gentle gaze. âJane, how could I joke about something like this? Come on, letâs eat. You canât neglect your health, no matter what.â
Upon meeting his tender gaze, Janeâs anger subsided a little, but she still maintained a stern expression. âYou have to promise youâre not lying to me.â
âOkay, I promise. Can we go eat now? Wil knows youâre upset and hasnât had dinner yet. Heâs been waiting for you,â Gabriel replied.
Jane bit her lip. Upon recalling how she had hit Wilhelm earlier, a flicker of guilt crossed her eyes. In the heat of the moment, she had lost her temper, but now that she was calmer, she regretted it.
Gabriel felt her forehead. âYour temperature is normal, but why do you look so pale?â
Jane shook her head, avoiding his gaze. âIâm fine. Letâs
go down.â
They descended the stairs one after the other and spotted Wilhelm on the living room floor, playing with his toys.
Hearing their footsteps, he looked up. The moment he saw Jane, fear flashed in his eyes, and he instinctively shrank back.
Seeing him like that made Jane feel even guiltier. No matter how angry she had been, she shouldnât have hit her child.
She squatted before Wilhelm and reached out to pat his head, but he dodged, fear evident in his eyes.
âMommy⦠I know I was wrong⦠Please donât hit me anymoreâ¦â he pleaded.
Janeâs heart ached as she apologized. âWil, Iâm sorry. I shouldnât have hit you today. I hope you can forgive me.â
Wilhelm kept his head down and said nothing, fiddling with his fingers.
The atmosphere grew tense and quiet.
Gabriel stepped closer, crouching down beside Jane and looking at Wilhelm. âWil, look at Daddy.â
Wilhelm hesitated for a moment but eventually lifted his gaze.
âWil, it was wrong for Mommy to hit you today, but think about it. Didnât you do something wrong too? If you hadnât lied to her, saying that Mason pushed you, she wouldnât have

gotten so angry and hit you. So, you were at fault too, right?â Gabriel asked.
Wilhelm, still hesitant, nodded slowly under Gabrielâs gaze.
âSince you admit you were also wrong, and Mommy has apologized to you, shouldnât you accept it and then apologize to her?â Gabriel continued to coax.
Wilhelm fell silent again.
Jane turned to Gabriel and softly said, âForget it. I overreacted. Wil is still just a child. Iâll teach him slowly after this.â
Gabriel sighed in resignation. âJane, if you keep this up, youâll spoil him.â
Wilhelm had only lied because he knew the Wilkies had his back. If he kept lying without facing any consequences, one day the Wilkies wouldnât be able to protect him.
âSo what if he gets spoiled? As long as the Wilkies are around, he wonât be bullied,â Jane retorted.
Gabriel was speechless.
Seeing his exasperation, Jane hugged his arm and whispered, âI just hit Wil today. If I talk to him about this now, he definitely wonât listen. He might even resent me more. Just play along with me. Weâll correct his lying habit later.â
Gabriel pressed his lips together but ultimately nodded.
Jane smiled and took Wilhelmâs hand. âWil, since youâve accepted Mommyâs apology, letâs move on from this. Letâs go for dinner!â
