Chapter 33: Hospital Déjà Vu

Hope | ✔1,740 words~9 min read

"You felt familiar the moment i met you. A lovely sort of déjà vu. When we spoke or laughed or danced, i became overwhelmed by the powerful sensation that i've been here before. And when we kissed, i felt the eneregies of a thousand lives on our lips, like our souls had known one another all along."

Jaimie-mae's nerves were still on edge as she finally lifted herself up off the grass. She still felt slightly sick to her stomach and her muscles were shaking.

"Fabian?"

"Yes?" He groaned as he started to get up on his knees.

"I threw up."

Fabian chuckled and then winced. "Yeah i know. Its fine, the rain will wash it away."

Jaimie-mae nodded then went over and bent down to assist Fabian. "Can you put your arm over my shoulders?"

He nodded and slowly slung an arm over her shoulders.

"Okay, on the count of three, i'm gonna pull you up."

She counted to three and then slowly eased Fabian up off the ground. Because she was significantly shorter than him, he didn't have much of her to lean on, but he was still grateful.

"Can you walk?" She asked as she looked up at him.

"Yeah."

He began to walk but he'd hiss everytime he stepped too heavy or he breathed too deeply.

"I think i should get you to a hospital."

"Nooo," he groaned.

"Give me your phone. I'll call Malakai," she said sternly as she held out her hand.

He reluctantly passed over his phone and pouted as she scrolled through his contacts. Suddenly, his breaths became uneven and he was beginning to feel kind of dizzy.

Jaimie-mae hadn't yet noticed Fabian; who was hardly standing on his own two feet.

Just as Malakai answered, Fabian interrupted.

"Jaim, i don't feel so good," Fabian said as he held his sides and struggled to breathe.

Jaimie-mae's heart skipped a beat at the use of the nickname. She scolded herself because now was not the proper time to be squealing over a nickname from a guy she liked... a lot.

She looked over at Fabian and almost dropped the phone when she saw Fabian stumble backwards a little.

"Hellloooooo," Malakai called out from over the phone.

"M-malakai! We're at the s-secret place at the park and Fabian got b-beat up real bad, he's not doing good and i can't drive him. How fast can you get here?" She rushed out.

"I can be there in seven minutes. Wait for me and make sure he's alright."

"Oka-"

Fabian stumbled back again and Jaimie-mae screamed and rushed to his side so that he wouldn't just drop to the ground.

"Ohmygosh. Fabian!"

"Shh. It's okay. I'm just feeling a little light headed. Don't worry," he shushed quietly.

"Here. Sit down." Jaimie-mae slowly eased him back down onto the grass and then scrambled over to her school backpack. She pulled out a bottle of water she had then rushed over to Fabian with it.

"Drink some."

He groaned. "I don't feel like holding it."

"Put your head back."

He did as he was told and she opened the bottle and poured some into his mouth. He drank it gratefully and he began to feel a little less dizzy. It didn't do anything for his pain however.

"It hurts Jaimie."

Jaimie-mae could have cried at how vunerable he looked and sounded. But she could have also squealed at how cute he was in that very moment.

"I know. Malakai is coming to pick us up and then we'll go to the hospital."

She went over to their stuff and packed away the cookies and art materials and then came back over to Fabian. Just as she did, she noticed Malakai running over frantically.

When he came to a stop in front of them he scanned the area.

"Shit. You guys are messed up," Malakai said as he furrowed his brows.

"You don't say," Fabian mumbled.

"Lets get you to my car," Malakai said as he hoisted Fabian up off the ground.

Fabian groaned and limped his way to the car with Malakai supporting some of his weight. Jaimie-mae followed closely behind with her and his bag slung over her shoulders. When they got to the car, Malakai helped Fabian into the back and then Jaimie-mae climbed into the passenger seat. She figured he'd need some space.

"Jaimieeee," Fabian whined.

She turned around and raised her eyebrow. He pat the seat beside him and she just laughed and rolled her eyes. She climbed into the back and sat down carefully beside him so she didn't accidently hurt him.

Fabian moved around trying to find a comfortable spot but he just ended up hurting himself more.

Jaimie-mae grabbed his hand and held it tight in her small one.

Fabians breathing was heavy and he was clenching his jaw. "Jaimie. It really hurts."

She felt so bad for him. She didn't know what she could do for him. He always did things for her and made her feel better and now she had no idea what to do for him.

"Do you think laying down would make you feel better?" She asked him quietly as she brushed her thumb over his slightly bruised knuckles.

He nodded silently and scooted down, wincing, and then finally he layed his head on her lap and put his feet up on the seats.

She swept her soft hand over his cheek and then through his silky hair as he made himself comfortable on her lap. His eyes fluttered shut and his breathing was uneven but not as heavy. She continued to run her hand through his hair, comforting him as Malakai drove to the hospital.

"I'm sorry you had to see that," Fabian said quietly after a while.

"It's fine. I just want you to be okay."

Fabian's lips lifted into a small tired smile and he was reminded about the whole reason he was waiting for Jaimie-mae to turn eighteen in the first place.

Fabian and Jaimie-mae sat in an awkwardly quiet hospital room after quite a bit of arguing with nurses. There was a type of de ja vu to the hospital now, especially because the two of them were there... together.

Fabian wanted Jaimie-mae to stay with him instead of his parents driving all the way to the hospital to shout at him again.

Doctor Jayce had gotten them in after speaking with the front desk for a moment. He laughed at Fabian and then shook his head as he guestered to Jaimie-mae.

"She's your hero, ay?" Jayce said with an amused smirk.

"Yes, yes she is," Fabian said with no hesitation.

Jaimie-mae blushed like crazy and purposely untucked her hair from behind her ear to hide her face.

So here they were, Fabian on annoyingly crinkly paper on a hospital bed and Jaimie-mae in a slightly uncomfortable chair, swinging her legs back and forth.

A few moments later, nurse Melody walked in with a clipboard.

"Guess who's back, back again," she sang as she dropped down into a wheely chair with a smile.

Jaimie-mae giggled and Fabian just rolled his eyes.

"Hi Fabian," Melody said. "So, tell me what happened?"

Fabian just looked at her, not once opening his mouth. Instead she turned to Jaimie-mae. "Can you tell me what happened?"

"Um, yeah I guess. He got beat up. Got kicked in the chest a few times too."

"Okay." Melody got up out of her seat. "Can you take your shirt off for me?"

Fabian blinked at her and Jaimie-mae giggled. He cracked a smile at her and felt a little less uncomfortable. He tried lifting the shirt over his head but his eyes just welled up with shiny tears. Jaimie-mae immediately sprung up out of her chair and rushed to his side. He grabbed her hand tightly, hardly noticing what he had done. It came natural to him now.

A small 'aww' came out of Melody's mouth which made the two of them groan.

"We can just cut your shirt if it hurts to much to move," Melody said quietly.

"Yes please," he wheezed out.

As soon as his shirt was fully cut off, Jaimie-mae had turned around and focused her attention on a heart monitor for two reasons. One being, she didn't like seeing the ugly yellow and purple bruises that littered his handsome chest. And, she was blushing as soon as she saw the six pack he always hid under his hoodie. It wasn't as visible because of the bruises but it was clear he had one.

Melody took a few notes and then a doctor came in afterwards, saying that he would need an x-ray. Jaimie-mae waited in the room patiently until they came back. The doctor then left and the two of them were alone again.

"What happened?" She asked quietly as she scooted up onto the bed.

"I got two fractures in my ribs. I gotta stay a night or two here because they say they have to monitor me or something. Apparently it could possibly be bad enough that I could have received some damage to one of my organs." The whole time he spoke, he sounded bored.

Jaimie-mae's eyes widened. "Woah. If I were you, I would have been bawling my eyes out."

"Yeah. I probably would if I wasn't worried about you worrying about me." His voice was quiet, barely above a whisper but Jaimie-mae heard it.

"Fa- what. You shouldn't hold back your tears you know."

He looked over at her and smirked. "Oh yeah. Where'd you learn that?"

Jaimie-mae huffed when she realized he had caught her with a good point. Fabian was always telling her to stop holding back her feelings. And here she was telling him the same thing.

"I'm hypocrite," she said quietly.

"Yeah, well so am I Jaimie-baby."

Jaimie-mae's heart stuttered at the sound of the nickname and once again she was very aware of the lack of space between them, not that she was complaining. The whole month, she had been trying to hide the fact her skin was basically burning when it came in contact with Fabian's skin. The hair on her arm would rise and she had to stop herself from admiring him when he wasn't looking.

Little did she know, he knew when she was sneaking a peak. And he didn't mind; not one bit.
