They walked down the long, winding streets and passed into the lower ring of the city. They werenât too far from the gate when they reached their destination. The majority of the group stopped, looking at the building.
âA bathhouse?â Clover asked.
âYes, weâre going to share a bath,â Yukiko replied, her hand resting on the door to the establishment. âIf you donât want to do so, thatâs up to you.â
Six pairs of eyes went to Gregory, who was blushing lightly, but met each of theirs.
âThe choice is yours,â Gregory said. âIâm worried about what it might mean in the future, but all of you expressed a willingness before.â
Daciana went the few feet forward to stand by Yukiko, Victoria almost in step with her. Nessa hesitated a second longer before joining her two friends. Clover and Ling clasped hands, then moved to stand with the others. Roshana looked from all of them to Gregory.
âYou donât mind me being here?â Roshana asked.
âNo,â Gregory said softly, âbut itâs your choice.â
Roshana searched his face for a moment before bowing her head. âMy spirit trembles with hope. I will join all of you.â
Jenn walked with Roshana to the others, then looked back at Gregory. âLast chance, dear one.â
Gregory looked over the group of young women. Daciana and Nessa had been friends for a little over a year. Victoria felt even a little closer to him than Nessa and Daciana, though heâd known her for less time. Clover and Ling had been his friends for a little over half a year, but his affection for them had grown faster than he thought it would. Roshana was the oddityâ she was the outsider, and yet also felt right the same way Victoria did. All of them were wearing hopeful and slightly worried expressions. He felt that their worry wasnât over him being there, but that he might turn away.
Taking a deep breath, he met Yukikoâs and Jennâs eyes. Both radiated only happiness, and hope. Swallowing hard, he knew that today was a step that would likely propel all of them down a path he was still a little unsure about.
âOkay. Since youâre all united, I will be, too,â Gregory said, nodding.
Yukikoâs smile bloomed wider and she opened the door. âWe have a room reserved for us.â
The proprietor was an older woman. Her gray hair was wound in a tight bun above her head. When the mass of them entered the building, she straightened up, giving them a professional smile. âGood afternoon. How might I assist you?â
âReservation under Pettit,â Yukiko said, approaching the counter. âWe had two connected bathing rooms.â
The older woman brightened. âOf course. We have everything in order and waiting for you.â Reaching back, she pulled on an orange cord. âOne of the staff will be here to take you in a moment.â
Less than a minute later, the door beside the counter opened and a woman in a simple robe tied at her waist came out. The womanâs ears were oddâ clearly not humanâ and higher on her head than most eurtikâs ears were. âIâm Gertrude, your helper while you are here. Follow me, please.â As she turned to go, Gregory was surprised at the broad, flat tail that hung just off the floor, peeking out from under the edge of the robe.
Gregory was the last one to follow. The receptionist gave him an appraising look as he passed the counter. Gregory tried not to feel self-conscious but failed.
They were led down a hall, past a number of small rooms, all the way to the back where the doors were widely spaced. Gertrude paused before the next to last one and opened the door.
âThis is the first of the two rooms reserved. It can hold half of you,â Gertrude told them. Going to the last door in the hall, she opened it, too. âThis one can hold all of you easily. There is a connecting door between them, in case you wish to use both. The door can be locked on either side to create privacy.â
âThank you,â Yukiko said, motioning the others into the larger room. âAre all the cleaning items already laid out?â
âEverything that was requested is waiting for you,â Gertrude replied. âThere are orange bellpulls in each room. If you pull one, I will be notified.â
âUnderstood,â Yukiko smiled. âI doubt weâll need anything more, but knowing is always good. Have a good day.â
Gregory was standing in the hallway with Yukiko and Gertrude. When Gertrude left, he asked softly, âShould I use the other room to start with then open the doors?â
Yukiko considered his question for a moment, then nodded her head. âYes. Go ahead and rinse, then join us. Iâll make sure the doors are unlocked on this side.â She touched his cheek. âDear one, are you sure?â
âNo,â Gregory admitted, letting his nervousness show. âI worry about it hurting our friendships, but they all agreed. We have the second room to split up, if needed.â
âThatâs true, dearest.â Yukiko looked down the hall, then kissed him lightly. âGo on. Weâll be waiting.â
Gregory swallowed as she entered the room with the others, shutting the door behind her. Taking a deep breath, he went to the other room. Using the latch, he locked the door to the hall, then started to strip down. He let all of his clothes and items go into his storage ring, instead of using the baskets by the door.
The room held a sunken stone tub that was lightly steaming. The wall to his right held a row of benches and a hand pump with buckets at the end of it. There was a collection of soaps next to the buckets on a block of stone. He picked one that smelled like orange before grabbing some water and taking a seat.
Is this really okay? Gregory asked himself. All of them agreed, and Iâm sure a few of them really are okay with it, but are some of them just saying yes to not be left out? I donât have any way of really knowing, do I? The thoughts chased themselves in his head as he washed.
The water was room temperatureâ it was good in that he wasnât covered in goosebumps, but also bad because itâd help more if it were icy. Once he was done cleaning up, Gregory stood up and took a long, slow, deep breath.
Approaching the door, he unlocked it, then hesitated. He knocked before he cracked it open an inch. âLadies?â
âCome in, dearest,â Yukiko called out to him.
Opening the door more, he looked inside. All eight women were still in the washing area. Clover, Jenn, Nessa, and Yukiko were scrubbing the backs of the other four. All too aware of his bodyâs reaction to the sight, he pushed the door fully open and walked over to the massive heated tub that took up half of the large room.
âClover, you stopped,â Ling said, turning to look over her shoulder. Lingâs eyes widened as she watched Gregory cross the room. âOhâ¦â
âLadies, itâs impolite to stare,â Yukiko said, her tone holding humor. âGreg is still getting used to the idea of mixed baths, as it is. The few times it was more than just Jenn and I in Waterrock, he had a hard time of it.â
âHeâs got a hard time of it now,â Victoria murmured too low for Gregory to hear, but everyone else did.
âYes, he does,â Jenn said in her normal tone. âThereâs a reason for that.â
âThe fact that eight naked women are washing each other?â Roshana asked. âLimaz is a bit more relaxed about the idea of mixed bathing. They have a taboo about wasting water, so mixed baths are common. My family does mixed bathing. The only difference here is that there is a man who isnât related to me.â
âBuldoun doesnât do mixed bathing at all,â Yukiko said. âIn the empire, itâs not accepted everywhere. This is one of the few bathhouses in the city that is mixed and accepts eurtiks.â
âIt took you time to find a place where we could do this?â Clover asked.
âYes.â
âUmm⦠Yuki?â Ling asked slowly. âWhy?â
âBecause each of you has expressed certain interests,â Yukiko said. âRoshana is only partially included in that statement. More will be clear when you find your resonance.â
Gregory took a seat, resting his back against the wall. He was glad the women seemed to have forgotten about him. His hope was that he would be acclimated to being in the room with them before they joined him in the tub.
Four of them were at an oblique angle, so he really only saw their backs, except for Roshana on the closest end. His theory about her being the bustiest of the women he knew was right. The last major difference was the small, round, bushy white tail right above her rear. He dragged his gaze away from her, but that only brought his eyes to Jenn washing Roshanaâs back. The disparity between them was large. Roshana was the tallestâ nearly Gregoryâs heightâ while Jenn was the shortest. Jennâs chest was a proud handful compared to Roshanaâs more robust bounty. Jenn was slim in figure, her hips only having a small flare, and Roshana had a more hourglass figure.
So different, Gregory thought as he looked at each down the line.
Nessa was behind Jenn, her figure clear as she scrubbed Dacianaâs back. Toned and ready to run was all Gregory could think of as he let his eyes drift over her. Nessaâs legs were powerfully built, probably from her motherâs heritage. She was between Jenn and Roshana in all other ways. Her tail would flick to the side occasionally, her ears twitching. Her cheeks turned red, as she knew he was looking their way.
Dacianaâs back was to him, so he couldnât see much of her, but her figure was lean and taut, a predator ready to pounce. Her tail was swishing side to side as Nessa washed her back. Gregory was intrigued that it came out just above her ass, looking as if her spine had split to form it. The fur on it seemed like it would be soft, and Gregory tried not to think about stroking it.
Behind Nessa and Daciana, Clover was washing Ling. Ling was much like Daciana, but a little leaner and a few inches taller. Ling didnât have a tail, but her ears were twitching slightly as she listened to the others around her. A single long scar marred her back, making Gregory wonder what had happened to her.
Clover chatted away as she was prone to do. Her hands, though, had a tenderness to them as she washed Ling. Her bushy tail quivered behind her, while her ears were aimed at the tub, her black eyes darting glances at Gregory. Her face burned, but she didnât turn away. In fact, she angled a little more toward him as Gregory watched.
Gregory pulled his eyes off her, his own face heating. Sheâs bolder than I thought she would be. Sheâs like Jenn with her slender build. Cloverâs a few inches taller than her and looks softer⦠Jenn is all hard-toned muscle, but Clover still has some padding on her.
Looking past Clover, Gregoryâs eyes stopped on Victoriaâs back. She had an hourglass figure from the back with a narrowed waist, but flared hips. Gregory had no idea she had curves like she did, hidden as they normally were with the academy outfits or gi.
Yukiko caught his eyes next and she smiled wider when his gaze met hers. Yukikoâs lips twisted into a sly smirk as she pivoted slightly the way Clover had, displaying more of herself to him. Gregory swallowed hard as his gaze trailed over what she offered him. Taking a shuddering breath, he looked away, his face burning hot.
âYouâre done, Vicky,â Yukiko said as she stood up. âHand me that bucket and close your eyes.â
Victoria bent forward to snag the bucket, then held it up over her head. Yukiko took it and poured water in small measures over Victoria as she rinsed off, letting the soap sluice away. Gregory had looked back to watch, only to be blessed with three more scenes of the same thing. By the time he realized they were done, all eight had turned to face the tub. His mouth went dry and his eyes widened as he stared at them.
âWell, he doesnât object,â Clover grinned.
âGregory wouldnât object to any of you,â Yukiko said, the first one to go toward him, âbut weâre being mean to him. We should join him in the water so his face might cool.â
âPlease?â Gregory croaked, clearing his throat and asking again. âPlease?â
There were giggles as they trailed Yukiko to the tub. All of them moved with a grace that had been hammered into them during physical training, but each had their own stride that made Gregory want to watch. Instead, he closed his eyes and took a few deep breaths.
âYouâve done well, dearest,â Yukiko said as she glided over to sit beside him.
âVery respectful, considering this must be hard on him,â Roshana said.
âGregory is always respectful,â Jenn said, her smile clear in her voice, âeven when weâre being mean to him.â
âSorry,â Clover whispered. âI⦠just couldnât help myself.â All the others looked at her, and her face burned. âI⦠might have⦠shown him more. While washing Ling.â
Yukiko snickered. âI know, I saw you. Then I did the same thing.â
âThen he saw the same from all of us,â Victoria said. âYou just got a little ahead of us, was all.â
Clover bowed her head. âI wanted to beâ¦Â more in that moment.â
âGreg?â Nessa asked slowly, wanting him to look at her. âDoes it bother you? Some of us having tails or other pronounced eurtik features?â
Gregoryâs eyes snapped open and he met her green ones with his own. âNo!â he said with a conviction that they all felt. He coughed, his face burning more. âIf anything⦠I was intrigued, especially with the differences between them.â
Yukikoâs hand touched his knee and he jerked, eyes wide as he looked at her in worry. âItâs okay, dearest,â she said soothingly. âThis is different from a normal mixed bath, but itâs not bad. Is anyone here uncomfortable? If you are, the other bath is open for you to use.â
None of them left the tub. None even looked to the open doorway.
âSee?â Yukiko smiled. âWeâre all fine, dearest. Unless you wish to go?â
Gregory met their eyes one by one before he nodded. âOkay. I feel awkward, but as long as youâre all okay, then Iâll be fine.â
âLimaz has an old saying,â Roshana said softly. ââIn the bath, your words should be as naked as you are.â When bathing with others, it is tradition to speak plainly and truthfully. Nothing said in the bath is held against the speaker. If it causes anger or pain to the one hearing it, then the two must sit and talk until the topic no longer causes those feelings.â
âThis wasnât in the books weâve read,â Jenn said.
âI would be surprised if it had been,â Roshana smiled. âGrandmother says that those from outside Limaz would never understand.â
âHmm⦠We learned something, and knowledge is always good,â Ling said, her eyes on Roshana. âMy family has lived near the border for generations and even I didnât know that bit of lore.â
âIâm more than happy to speak with any of you about Limaz,â Roshana said, âor anything else. Iâd like to be one of you.â
âAnd we will welcome you,â Yukiko smiled.
Roshanaâs smile grew wide. âThank you, Yuki. I was worried that you, above all others, would be against me.â
âYou should be told the same they were,â Jenn said. âLet me explainâ¦â
âGreg?â Victoria asked, getting his attention as Jenn spoke softly to Roshana. âIâve watched you with the naginata. I had a question⦠are you a reborn soul?â
That got Jenn to cut off what she was saying, as Roshanaâs attention had snapped to Victoria, then to Gregory.
Seeing that he had everyoneâs attention, Gregory exhaled slowly. âNo lyingâ¦â he murmured. âYes. Gin and Egil both believe I am. And yes, the skill I have with the naginata is tied to that.â
âDo you think other past lives might be attracted to each other?â Victoria asked.
âThey can be,â Yukiko said. âJenn and I both feel like weâve been reborn, as well.â
âOh?â Victoria was a little surprised, then she smiled. âIâm pretty sure that I knew Gregory before. From the first day I saw him at the inn when he was coming to the academy, I felt a pull to him.â
âIt was the same with me when I saw him,â Yukiko nodded.
âAnd me when he faced me in the arena,â Jenn added.
âIâm not alone?â Roshana asked with wide eyes. âI thought I might be going a little crazy. Itâs not just Gregory, though⦠itâs all of you. My spirit hums as if itâs a happy cat that found its home.â
âMe, too,â Clover said suddenly, standing up. âMy blood sings with joy around you all. Ling was the first, and it hummed when Gregory was in weapons class with us, but when we met you all in tactics⦠I felt more alive.â
âIâve always felt like that,â Daciana said. âItâs why I was so certain about joining the clan.â
âI was uncertain, but being with you four in tactics always felt like being home,â Ling said slowly. âComfortable, warm, and welcoming.â
Nessaâs brow furrowed. âIâve always felt comfortable around you, but I hadnât thought of it being connected to past lives⦠what would the odds of all of us being connected like that even be?â
Gregory swallowed. He looked at Yukiko, silently asking her.
âLadies?â Yukiko asked softly before exhaling slowly. âThereâs a reason that you all feel like this. And yes, as deeply as I believe in Aether, I believe that thereâs a reason. I canât tell you what⦠not right now, not until youâve all found your resonance and have faced the truth about yourselves. I ask you to trust in me. There is a reason and I will tell you, if your souls prove true.â
The six women not married to Gregory all stared at her, then bowed their heads, accepting what sheâd told them. Gregory swallowed as he watched them all. He silently asked Darkness if this is what his dream had been the night before.
~*~*~
They lounged in the tub for a while making normal small talk. Gregory knew they would have to go soon, so he took a slow, deep breath and stood up, getting everyone looking his way.
âWe should get going,â Gregory managed, his throat a little tight as his body responded to all the eyes focused on him. âFigured Iâd go first.â
The only way out for him was past the others. He took a step forward, the water making small waves away from his thighs. Heâd chosen Victoria and Nessa to move toward, figuring them the most likely to move aside for him. They hesitated and Victoria licked her lips, her eyes focused below his navel, but she slid aside when Nessa did.
Face burning, he climbed out, and started walking to the second room. âSee you all in a bit. Iâll just lock the doors on my way out.â
âThatâs fine, dearest,â Yukiko called after him. âWeâll be along shortly.â
âHow do you manage to take all ofâ?â Daciana started to ask, but was cut off when Nessa slapped a hand over her mouth.
Gregoryâs ears went crimson, as heâd heard that before he shut the door.
