Maraâs day began with exhaustion weighing heavily on her shoulders, the remnants of her sleepless night clinging to her like an unwelcome cloak. Her head felt cloudy and her limbs sluggish, as though she were trudging through molasses. She sighed heavily as she trudged toward her classroom, each step feeling heavier than the last.
The school day stretched ahead, an endless expanse of lessons and responsibilities that Mara could hardly muster the energy to care about. By the time the first bell rang, her eyes were already half-closed, her head drooping against her desk as she let out another tired sigh.
She tried to focus on her teacherâs words, tried to scribble notes on the pages of her notebook, but her efforts were futile. Her mind was clouded with fatigue, her body demanding rest even as her thoughts raced with frustration. Every now and then, her head would nod forward, her eyelids drooping dangerously close to shutting completely.
âMara?â her teacherâs voice cut through the haze, stern and sharp as it echoed across the room.
Mara blinked rapidly, her eyes snapping open as she jerked her head upright. âHuh? Yes! I meanâyes, maâam!â she stammered, sitting up straight as heat rose to her cheeks.
The teacher frowned, her gaze steady and disapproving. âPay attention. This material is important, and I expect you to be fully engaged. Understood?â
âYes, maâam,â Mara mumbled, her voice barely audible.
As the lesson resumed, Mara bit her lip, frustration bubbling in her chest as she stared blankly at her notebook. She wanted to sleep so badly. She needed it. Yet, no matter how hard she tried, sleep remained elusiveâtaunting her with its absence.
During the brief break between classes, Mara leaned forward against her desk, her arms crossed and her forehead resting against them. She closed her eyes, willing herself to drift off, if only for a moment.
But her mind refused to quiet. The whispers from her nightmares lingered on the edges of her thoughts, faint echoes that refused to fade completely. Every time she tried to relax, they pulled her back into wakefulness, leaving her even more frustrated than before.
âJust one moment,â she muttered to herself, her voice muffled against her sleeve. âOne moment of peace. Thatâs all Iâm asking for. Is that too much to ask?â
Her classmates moved about the room, their laughter and chatter blending into a soft hum of background noise. Mara barely noticed, her focus entirely on the futile battle for sleep.
By the time the school day ended, Mara felt worse than she had when it began. Her head throbbed with a dull ache, her body dragged forward by sheer willpower alone. She barely managed to smile at her friends as they walked home together, her lips curving weakly before falling back into a straight line.

Ela glanced at her with a mixture of curiosity and concern, her sharp gray eyes narrowing slightly. âYou look terrible,â she said bluntly, her tone steady but laced with worry.
Mara let out a weak laugh, her voice dry and humorless. âThanks for the pep talk, Ela. Real confidence booster.â
Ela raised an eyebrow, her concern deepening. âIâm serious, Mara. Whatâs going on with you? Youâve been acting⦠different.â
âIâm fine,â Mara replied automatically, her voice flat as she sighed heavily. âJust tired, thatâs all.â
Ela frowned but said nothing, her gaze lingering on Mara for a moment longer before she turned back toward the path ahead.
Lira walked quietly beside Mara, her steps slow and thoughtful as she glanced at her friend. Though she said nothing, the expression in her emerald-green eyes betrayed her worry. The sight of Maraâs exhausted frame reminded her too much of her own troubles, and she sighed softly, her melancholy settling over her like a shadow.
The repeated sighs from Mara and Lira grated on Elaâs nerves, her irritation bubbling beneath the surface as she struggled to maintain her composure. âYou both need to snap out of it,â she muttered, her voice low but sharp.
Mara barely registered the remark, her mind too muddled to respond. She trudged onward, her thoughts consumed by the growing weight of fatigue and frustration.
When she finally reached home, Mara felt her body practically collapse onto the couch. Her grandmother called out to her from the kitchen, asking if she wanted dinner, but Mara could barely muster the energy to reply. Her stomach twisted with hunger, yet the thought of eating felt like too much effort.
She forced herself to take a few bites of food before stumbling toward her bedroom, her steps heavy and unsteady. By the time her head hit the pillow, she was already drifting off, her breathing evening out as sleep finally claimed her.
The first few hours passed in blissful peace, her dreamless slumber wrapping around her like a comforting embrace. But it didnât last.
Her body jerked awake, drenched in sweat as her heartbeat thundered in her chest. The whispers were back, louder and more insistent than ever, pulling her into their chaotic symphony of dissonant voices.
âWhy?â one voice hissed, smooth and velvety, curling around her like smoke. âWhy do you resist?â
Another voice laughed softly, its tone sharp and cruel. âYou canât escape us. We are part of you.â
Mara gasped, her hands clutching the blankets as she struggled to steady herself. The oppressive darkness pressed against her, amplifying her fear and frustration until it felt unbearable.
But this time, something changed.
Instead of succumbing to the panic, Mara felt a spark of irritation flare within her. The endless cycle of nightmares, the persistent whispers, the sleepless nightsâit was too much. She was tired of being afraid. Tired of being helpless.
She squeezed her eyes shut, biting her lip as her thoughts seethed with sarcasm and anger. Oh, shut up already. Canât you leave me alone for one night? Or are you so bored that you have to haunt my dreams for entertainment?
The voices faltered for a moment, as though caught off guard by the force of her thoughts.
Mara exhaled sharply, her irritation mounting as she threw the blanket off her legs. Her hands clenched into fists as she stared at the ceiling, her internal frustration intensifying.
If this is how itâs going to be, fine. Just wait for me to uncover you. Whatever you are, whoever you are⦠Iâll figure it out. And Iâll put an end to it.
Her resolve solidified as she swung her legs over the side of the bed, her bare feet touching the cool floor. She would uncover the truth behind her nightmaresâthe whispers, the fragmented visions, the unexplained pull toward the shadows.
For the first time in weeks, fear was no longer the dominant force in her mind. Determination took its place, driving her forward with unwavering resolve.
