âIâm not sure what to make of it, honestly,â Dr. Miller admitted, her eyes studying me.
âYouâve been through a lot, and even though youâre finally opening up about it, you donât seem as shaken as I thought you would be.â
âThatâs the whole point, Doc,â I replied, a small smile playing on my lips.
âIâve been through hell, and when more crap piled on top of that, I just accepted it. I decided that if I wanted to move on, I needed to stop overthinking everything.â
âBecause that would just lead to stress and pointless worry. Iâm finally doing well, and I donât want to fall back into that cycle.â
Dr. Miller smiled.
âYouâre showing more maturity and resilience than before, Ronnie. Itâs good to see,â her smile faded. âBut Iâm worried about something else.â
âIt seems like youâre suppressing your pain, burying your true feelings deep down. Thatâs not the way to move forward.â
âIâm not,â I assured her, but something about her words struck a chord.
Was I really suppressing everything? It didnât feel like it. I felt free, I felt better. I had let everything go, hadnât I?
âI suggest you think about it,â she advised, âand when you have your answer, you can tell me.â

The gang and I gathered at Amyâs and my apartment. Amy and Nick, the blissfully engaged couple, sat together as usual, looking even more in love than before.
Lauraâs baby bump was starting to show, but only from the front. Most pregnant women would probably be envious.
Then there were Warren and Ransom, also happily engaged, chatting excitedly about their upcoming spring wedding.
But the two who were the most thrilled among us were Santana and Kyle.
âI landed my first modeling gig!â Santana announced.
âOh my God, congratulations!â Laura exclaimed, hugging her. âWhoâs it for?â
Santana beamed. âItâs for a small, successful boutique at Molder Park. I canât wait to start!â
âThatâs a great start to your career,â Ransom said, smiling. âNot many models get off to such a good start.â
âWell, not all models are me,â Santana replied, full of herself.
Laughing, I said, âYouâre very humble.â
âI know, right?â she winked at me.
âWell, I have some news too,â Kyle chimed in, grinning. âTomorrow is the Fraying Godâs concert at Marlowe Hall. Youâre all coming.â
âOf course,â Amy agreed, âbut are you giving us tickets?â
âFunny you should askâ¦â he chuckled, pulling tickets from his pocket. âMake sure you can make it, or Iâll never forgive you.â
He tried to look stern but failed, too caught up in his excitement and happiness.
âDonât worry,â I reassured him, patting him on the back, âweâll be there.â
âYou too?â he asked, then slung his arm around my shoulder and wiggled his eyebrows suggestively. âI canât wait to see you come.â
It was nice that I could flirt with him without it being awkward or him taking it the wrong way. I missed joking around with Kyle.
âYou canât, can you?â I teased, winking at him.
He chuckled and let me go. See? Harmless indeed.
âWe have some news too,â Nick suddenly announced, his tone serious. We all turned to look at him. He exchanged a glance with Amy, who nodded encouragingly, and then turned back to us.
âI passed the audition, so Iâm moving to Chicago in a few months.â
A stunned silence filled the room. I was the first to break it.
âCongratulations,â I said, smiling proudly. âI knew you could do it!â
âYeah, man,â Kyle added, patting his friendâs back. âIt was obvious youâd make it. Youâre one tough guy.â
âThereâs more,â Amy chimed in, a small smile on her face. âIâm moving with him.â
I already knew that, but the others didnât.
âWhat?!â Santana exclaimed, her eyes wide. âWhy?â
âBecause weâre engaged, and Iâm not about to let some Chicago woman steal him away from me,â Amy retorted, raising an eyebrow defiantly.
Santana looked like she was about to argue, but luckily Laura saw it coming and covered the redheadâs mouth.
âWeâre really happy for you,â she said, while Santana glared at her. âYou have our full support.â
âBut itâs going to be sad,â Warren added, his face falling. âChicago is so far away. Our group will miss two of its best members.â
âI know, buddy,â Nick replied, a sad smile on his face. âBut I have to do this. They offered me a full scholarship at the University of Chicago,â
âAnd the chance to play in one of the top football leagues? Itâs a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I couldnât say no.â
âAnd Iâm going with him,â Amy added, gripping her fiancéâs hand. âFor support, for familiarity, and also to find myself there.â
We all knew what Amy was talking about. Like me, sheâd left college and had been drifting for a bit. She needed to find her place in the world, and if that place was Chicago, then so be it.
âIâm happy for you, donât get me wrong,â Santana said, once Lauraâs hand was no longer covering her mouth. âBut itâs going to be really lonely without you.â
âDonât be silly,â Nick said, grinning, âyouâll still have each other, and there are ways to keep in touch, like Skype or Facebook or whatever. And itâs only a few hours away.â
âYeah,â Amy agreed, âitâs not like weâre moving to Europe or anything.â
âTrue,â Santana conceded, âbut stillâ¦â
âItâs going to be okay, Santana,â I reassured her with a smirk. âYou got me, after all. Iâm like two people in one.â
That got her laughing. âLetâs not start talking about your various issues, Ronnie.â
âYeah, I agree,â Kyle said, nudging me in the shoulder, âletâs focus on the good stuff, not the fact you chopped off your hair, or the fact you changed your nameââ
âHey, I already explained it to you,â I said, scowling. âItâs the original nickname Iâd been given, so itâs only right I use it.â
âWhich is also partially true,â Warren muttered darkly, âbut letâs not get into it.â
âActually, I just realized something,â Laura said, looking at me. âWhen Amy leaves, what will you do with the apartment?â
Honestly? I hadnât thought about it. When Amy said she was moving with Nick, all I could think about was how happy I was for her. But now that Laura brought it upâ¦
âI donât know,â I said, frowning in thought. âI guess Iâll have to find a cheaper place or crash at one of yours.â
âYouâre more than welcome to stay with me,â Santana said, âyou can take Salvaâs room.â
Salva was short for Salvador, Santanaâs brother who was in the army.
âOr you can crash at my place,â Kyle said, grinning. âThe guys will surely appreciate some female presence.â
I chuckled. âI think Iâll wait until Amyâs actually leaving before I decide.â
âYeah,â Amy said, shooting me a grin. âIâm not giving up Ronnie just yet.â
âHey, guys,â Warren suddenly said, grinning wickedly, âwhy donât we play Never Have I Ever? For old times' sake?â
We all knew what he meant. Soon enough, Amy and Nick would be gone, and we wouldnât be able to joke around as a group anymore.
So, everyone agreed to play this silly game because there was a good chance it would be the last time we could do it all together.
âNever have I ever been pregnant,â Santana started, smirking at Laura, who rolled her eyes and took a shot of apple juice instead of alcohol.
She wasnât the only one who took a shot. Since Iâd basically been pregnant, I took a shot myself and laughed at the absurdity of it all.
It was Lauraâs turn next.
âNever have I ever been engaged,â she said, grinning smugly when the four engaged people around us downed a shot.
âNever have I ever worked as a waitress,â Amy said, and I had to take one.
And so, it went on, with each of us downing a shot of alcohol and Laura only apple juice.
But then it was Kyleâs turn, and when he said, âNever have I ever been in love,â it made me stop and think.
At first, I was about to laugh at those who had to take a shot, but then I paused. Hadnât I been in love before?
What Iâd felt for Jax was some sort of twisted infatuation, which eventually faded, especially after that almost-rape incident.
It wasnât love, or anything close to love. So that wasnât what made me pause.
Freyâs face popped into my mind next, and I could see him clearly.
His dark, thick mohawk, his purplish-gray eyes, his strong, muscular build, his laugh, his grins, his charm, his openness.
I remembered how heâd lifted me, how he slapped my butt jokingly, how he hugged me when I needed him, how he made me feel safe, how he whispered to me that it was okay, that he was there for meâ¦
My face flushed as the realization hit me like a ton of bricks.
âVerâRonnie?â Lauraâs voice made me snap my eyes to her, and I saw everyone was looking at me strangely.
I forced out a laugh.
âSorry for zoning out on you guys,â I said, and then laughed again, maybe a little too loudly.
âYou sound weird,â Warren said, his eyes filled with concern. âAnd your face is red. Are you sure youâre okay?â
âYeah, right as rain, really,â I said, and then forced a smile. âWhere were we?â
Luckily, I managed to play it cool for the rest of the evening, so no one suspected a thing.
But the thoughts wouldnât leave me alone.
The thoughts I wasnât ready to face.
Iâd fallen in love with Frey Holmes.
