Chapter 7 - Cow and the First Town
> âCanât say I didnât expect itâ¦â ~Sherly, the cow girl
âWhatever reason you may have, Lady Ishuin, we canât allow a demon-cow into town!â said one of the guards manning the huge gate. âSheâs going to induce panic. No one will understand, even if youâre there to explain to them.â
Sherly sighed. âItâs fine, Ishuin. I can just stay with the carriages.â
The various carriages that made up the Cancerâs Clawâs caravan were parked outside the town, settled neatly and properly on the side of the road in order to not hinder any passersby. Sherly questioned the security of such a decision, but she remembered that she wasnât of this world, and didnât have all the information needed to judge it. She headed towards it, but the elf Wielder gripped one of her horns and forced her to face the guards.
âOw!â
âLook at how small she is,â Ishuin started. âWhat damage can she do? Sheâs alone. She doesnât even know how to cast Fireballs. All she can do is regenerate on her own. You can ask any of my warriors, they can tell you that this demon-cow, Sherly, fought against her own kin, and won! You can even hear her speak, for Kansaâs sake!â
The warriors Ishuin spoke of had already entered the village, along with the survivors and the dead. They had an easy time entering. Sure, they couldâve snuck Sherly within the line, since she was difficult to differentiate from a normal cow in the first place. But both she and Ishuin had agreed to only resort to such tactics during desperate situations. They didnât want to be caught in a problematic scenario where commotion would quickly go out of their control.
If Sherly were to convince people that she was good despite being a demon-cow, she understood that she must come from a place of honesty.
That, however, also meant she had to face stubborn people, unwilling to change their perspective.
âIâm sorry, Lady Ishuin,â said the same guard. There were two of them, Sherly noticed. The other one was just silently watching her. âWe canât take the risk, regardless of what you say. A demon is a demon. Sheâs lucky that we havenât even killed her yet.â
âYou will do no such thing!â Ishuin exclaimed, mana raging around her, causing the speaking guard to flinch. With an angry huff, she turned around and stomped away from the town gates.
At least she let go before dragging me awayâ¦
Sherly cautiously followed. When they arrived at the caravan, the elf let out an angry squeal.
âThose good for nothing, arrogant, stupid⦠Worthless!â
âHey, Ishuin. Itâs okay,â Sherly said. âIâm completely fine with staying here. I can probably find some food. In fact, Iâm not really that hungry yet, after eating so many demon-cattle.â
âThatâs not the point!â Ishuin shouted.
Sherly flinched away at the angry elf. Not because she was afraid, but because she didnât know how to calm her down. She already considered the elf her friend, but they were nowhere near close enough for her to be comfortable clashing with such anger. No matter how trivial or small the cause of it was.
Fortunately, Ishuin caught herself. âSorry. I shouldnât have screamed at you.â
âLook, Iâm really happy that youâre trying to help me out, Ishuin. I donât even know why youâre being so nice to me. But really, Iâll be fine out here.â
âNo, I wonât let you be on your own, Sherly,â Ishuin said.
Before the cow girl could speak, the elf Wielder raised a hand.
âMaymay,â she said.
Suddenly, the dog-zilim appeared out of nowhere. âYes, maâam?â
âInform Kasta that sheâll be covering for my duties while weâre in Crossmark. Sheâll coordinate with the survivors on where to bury their dead. If any of them chose to stay, tell her to let them.â
âRight away.â
Sherly noticed Maymay take a glance at her.
âWould it be alright if I stay here with you and Sherly, Ishuin?â the dog-zilim asked.
âThatâll save us some time for tomorrow,â said the elf. âAs long as youâre fine missing out on the tavern, you can stay here.â
âYeah, Iâm not too fond of that, anyway.â Maymay smiled and brightened up, as to telegraph that a brilliant idea had formed in her head. âOh, I can bring some food out, if you want?â
âIâll have my usual then. Thank you.â
âSherly?â
âAny sort of meat,â said the cow girl. âThank you.â
With a smile, Maymay disappeared again.
âThat was a Skill, right?â Sherly inquired. âMaymay disappearing, I mean. Or was she teleporting?â
âAre those actual things that people can do in your world?â Ishuin asked. âOr are they also part of fiction?â
âThereâs no magic where I came from. Everything was done through research. Science, if you know what that is.â
âScience here involves magic, still.â
âWell, Iâm pretty sure your studies are more interesting than ours, then.â
âTo answer your question about Maymay, sheâs able to teleport short distances, yes. Her hearing is quite exceptional as well. She can easily recognize my voice and know when Iâm calling her even from far away.â
If you spot this tale on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.
Ishuin gestured towards one of the carriages, urging for Sherly to follow. The cow girl did as asked. As soon as she got close, the elf made a sign with both hands.
Mana surrounded them, originating from the carriage. Sherly observed, as the vehicle expanded, enclosing the two of them within. The ground was replaced by a wooden floor, with carpets to add comfort. Chairs and sofas surrounded them. A table, too. Each of the walls had its own intricately framed window, and two doors could be found on each end.
On one corner of the room was a soft, round, low sofa. Sherly took it as her own spot, lying down to rest her legs.
âIâm not going to lie, I think this is better than whateverâs in that town,â she started. âQuiet, cozy. I donât mind staying here at all.â
Ishuin took one of the long sofas. She gave a long sigh, relaxing and putting her legs up.
âThis one was made through applied science,â the elf explained, getting back on topic. âMagic and technology working together to make a carriage that can expand to a small room, with basic comforts. I can choose to create a kitchen and a wardrobe if needed, but we have no need for either at the moment.â
âAh, that reminds me,â Sherly started. âIâll need clothes when I become a zilim.â
âYouâll need those the moment you become a chilim, Sherly,â Ishuin noted. âJust evolving to that level will have you standing on two feet. Most of your parts will adjust to a humanoid form. The only issue youâll have is your head and skin, but youâll be as bare as any other human, or elf, or whatever else standing on two legs, with only your cow hair to provide you some cover.â
âHow soon am I supposed to reach that evolution?â
Ishuin shrugged. âAsk Letters?â
âLetters? Are you there?â
[You acquired a lot of Evolution Strains from all the demon-cattle that you consumed. If you can gather a few more, we can spend those Strains to make a chilim Trait. Youâll have limited options at first, but you can eventually evolve into a zilim.]
âGet Strains to acquire Traits, sounds straightforward enough,â Sherly said after conveying Lettersâ explanation to Ishuin.
[Well, there are some things that can make your decision-making a bit complicated. And I suggest that you learn them now.]
In order to skip the process of retelling everything that Letters had written on the screen in front of Sherly, Ishuin got up from the sofa and sat beside her.
âYeah, Letters is right, Sherly,â said the elf. âYou should learn about these things, even the most basic ones.â
âWhat are these things exactly?â Sherly tilted her head, a little confused.
[Well, letâs start with what youâve experienced already. You gain Levels by killing monsters. A Level will provide you with the ability to learn a Skill or improve a Skill that you already have. As a demon-cow, you gain the ability to obtain Evolution Strains by consuming monsters, on top of other available options.]
âItâs different for the others?â Sherly inquired.
âPeople who choose to evolve will need to acquire their own Evolution Strains to convert into Evolution Traits,â Ishuin started. âThere are many ways to acquire that. Eating is one of them.â
âWhatâs the difference between learning a Skill with an Evolution Strain and learning a Skill from a Level?â
[There isnât,] Letters wrote. [There are some Skills that could be acquired with only a Level. There are some that require both a Level and some Evolution Strains. There are even a few that require an Evolution Trait.]
âOh, so those that choose to evolve have an additional set of Skills to choose from?â Sherly turned to Ishuin. âWhy didnât you choose to evolve? Is it because itâs backwards?â
âBackwards?â Ishuin tilted her head.
âTurning into an animal.â
âI think youâre confusing things. How you view evolution is subjective. People who choose to do so, do so voluntarily. Theyâre an improvement.â
âSo why didnât you?â
âWhat I want is difficult to find.â Ishuin scratched her head. âIâm looking for a Draconic Evolution Trait.â
âOh⦠I suppose thatâs difficult to find.â
Ishuin couldnât hold her laugh. âOkay. Youâre really not from this world.â
âI thought we already settled that?â
âWe did. But I suppose this just further proves it. A Draconic Evolution Trait doesnât exist, Sherly. Theyâre stories of myth. Fairytales.â
âSo thatâs not why you chose not to evolve?â Sherly slumped her head on the sofa and sighed. âYouâre confusing me.â
âWell⦠They are myth, but I am looking for one. Keep it hidden from Kasta and the others. Itâs a secret only few people know. Because theyâll laugh at me for having such a dream.â
âBut you said Maymay can hear you, right?â
âNot inside here.â
âOh. Alright. Iâll keep it a secret, promise.â After resolving this small tangent, Sherly turned her attention back to Letters. âSo what youâre saying is that I might want to use my Evolution Strains on some Skills as I level up?â
[Correct. In fact, youâve gained three more Levels after defeating the herd of demon-cattle.]
âHow many Strains do I have?â
[52.]
âHow many Strains do each Skill need?â
[Depends. The cheapest ones require one Strain, out of those Skills which require Strains at all. The most expensive one you can currently learn at your Level needs five Strains.]
âHow much do I need for an Evolution Trait?â
[Cheapest one is 60, and the most expensive one is 120.]
Just then, something clicked in Sherlyâs mind. She turned to Ishuin. âWait! You said youâre looking for an Evolution Trait, right? Canât I just find mine and then have it for free?â
Ishuin shook her head.
[That was my first suggestion, Sherly. If you acquire a Humanoid Evolution Trait straightaway, then you can skip a lot of the chilim steps. You might just need two or three of these Traits to jump straight into your zilim form.]
âBut that requiresâ¦â
[A lot. Traits are difficult to find. Youâll have to consume a large amount if youâre looking for one.]
The thought made Sherly uncomfortable. âYeah, weâre not doing that. How expensive are Humanoid Evolution Traits, if Iâm trading them in with Strains?â
[Five hundred Strains. And you have to be a chilim, if you want to acquire them through the Evolution System.]
âAnd you said I might need two or three?â
[Depends on how you get there. You might need less, you might need more. Weâll only know as you progress.]
âMakes sense. Anything else I need to know?â
[Well⦠Like I said, you have three Levels now. You can either learn a new Skill or improve Continuous Regeneration in any combination thrice.]
âHow much does it cost to upgrade Continuous Regeneration?â With a mental prompt, Sherly asked Letters for the Skill Description of it. A second screen appeared to grant her request.
[Continuous Regeneration. This Skill allows you to regenerate your wounds at a steady rate equal to your Mana-Regeneration. It will not replace any amputated limbs, or biologically defective organs. Otherwise, it will fully heal your wounds, leaving you with a completely scar free skin.]
[2 Evolution Strains each,] Letters replied.
âCan I learn any Skills that can improve my Mana-Regeneration?â
[The actual Skill, Mana-Regeneration, is available for you. It doesnât cost any Evolution Strains, but costs two Levels instead.]
That made the decision easy for Sherly. âAwesome. Iâll take that Skill, then improve my Continuous Regeneration once.â
[Just to be sure, Iâll need a confirmation on that, please.]
âYep. Confirmed.â
[You have learned Mana-Regeneration. This Skill increases your Mana-Regeneration Attribute by 10.]
[You have gained Continuous Regeneration Level 2.]
âI donât feel much stronger,â Sherly said.
âThe things you learned donât show an immediate effect,â Ishuin said, standing up and stretching. She gave a wide yawn that caused Sherly to feel a little sleepy as well. âYouâll notice them tomorrow, when we fight.â
âAlright. Can you wake me up when the food gets here?â
âSure. Maymay will wake us up. Iâll take a nap too.â
Before either of them could even fall into a slumber, a sudden rapping on the door shook both of them awake.
âLady Ishuin, wake up!â
The voice came from Maymay. She sounded distressed. Without a second thought, both Sherly and Ishuin went for the door.
âWhat is it?â asked the elf.
âItâs Duis! Theyâre throwing him out of town!â
