Chapter 16: The Distracting Interview

It was a warm afternoon in a cozy office space, sunlight streaming through the blinds and casting soft patterns across the desk. Sandra adjusted her clipboard, flipping to the next page of her notes. The informal setting was intentional—interviews, in her opinion, were always better when people felt comfortable.

Ethan sat across from her, his hands folded neatly in his lap, trying to steady his nerves. He was dressed casually but sharp, hoping to make a good impression. Sandra, however, exuded confidence in her simple gray sweater, jeans, and flip-flops. Her hair was pulled back just enough to keep it out of her face, and her smile was both warm and sharp.

"All right, Ethan," Sandra said, tapping her pen lightly on the clipboard. "Let's get started, shall we?"

Ethan nodded, clearing his throat. "Yes, ma'am. Ready when you are."

Sandra chuckled softly. "You can drop the 'ma'am,' Ethan. This isn't a courtroom." She leaned back in her chair, propping her feet up casually on the desk. "So, tell me a bit about yourself. Why do you think you're a good fit for this role?" she asked, pen poised.

Ethan began answering, his voice steady but still carrying a hint of nervous energy.

As Sandra shifted into a more relaxed position, one of her flip-flops slipped off her foot and flopped onto the desk with a light thud.

She didn't seem to notice—or care—as she adjusted her clipboard and crossed her ankles, leaving one bare foot resting comfortably on the edge of the desk. The flip-flop sat next to it, abandoned.

As Ethan spoke, his eyes kept flickering toward Sandra's bare foot resting casually on the desk. He wasn't trying to be rude, but something about the way her toes wiggled absentmindedly made it hard for him to focus.

Sandra, being the observant woman she was, caught his glance immediately. She smirked while raising one eyebrow.

"Ethan," she said, her voice smooth and teasing. "Are you more interested in my foot than my very well-prepared interview questions?"

Ethan froze mid-sentence, his face instantly turning crimson. "N-no! I mean, I was just—"

Sandra laughed, her shoulders shaking as she put the clipboard down. "Relax, I'm just teasing you. But I do have to admit..." She paused, wiggling her toes playfully. "They can be a bit distracting, can't they?"

Ethan chuckled awkwardly, his shoulders finally relaxing a little.

Sandra leaned back again, clearly enjoying the playful shift in the dynamic. "Tell me something, Ethan. Are you ticklish? Because I know I am."

The question caught Ethan off guard, but her lighthearted tone made him laugh. "Uh, well, I think most people are, right?"

Sandra grinned mischievously. "That's a safe answer." She tapped her pen against her clipboard. "Go ahead, Ethan. Break the ice. I dare you."

Encouraged by her playful tone, Ethan hesitated only a moment before reaching out and lightly running a finger along the arch of Sandra's bare foot.

The reaction was instant.

Sandra gasped and let out a burst of genuine laughter, her foot jerking slightly but not pulling away entirely. "Oh! Ethan!" she exclaimed between giggles. "Okay, okay—wait, wait—let me prepare myself."

But Ethan couldn't help but grin as he lightly traced his finger along her arch again, and this time Sandra squirmed in her chair, her shoulders shaking with laughter. "You're—hah!—having way too much fun with this!" she teased breathlessly.

"Hey, you asked for this!" Ethan said, his confidence growing as he lightly brushed his finger under her toes. Sandra let out a loud laugh, her foot twitching with every movement.

"Okay, okay!" Sandra finally pulled her foot back, clutching her stomach as she caught her breath. "You win, Ethan. I surrender. Note to self: don't dangle my foot in front of interviewees."

Ethan leaned back with a sheepish grin. "Noted. You definitely weren't kidding about being ticklish."

Sandra chuckled, sliding her foot back into her flip-flop. "But you know what, Ethan? That moment right there—it broke the tension, didn't it? Interviews aren't just about answering questions. They're about connection, about being real with people."

Ethan nodded thoughtfully. "I'll keep that in mind. Thank you, Sandra."

Sandra smiled warmly, tapping her clipboard. "Good. Now, let's finish this interview strong, shall we?"

The rest of the interview proceeded smoothly. Ethan seemed more relaxed, his answers more natural, and Sandra guided him through the remaining questions with the same warmth and professionalism.

As they wrapped up, Sandra stood and extended her hand. "You did great, Ethan. And next time—eyes up here, all right?" she teased with a playful wink.

Ethan laughed, shaking her hand. "Absolutely, Sandra. Thanks again for the opportunity."

As Ethan exited the office, Sandra leaned back in her chair again, a satisfied smile on her face. Interviews weren't just about resumes and rehearsed answers—they were about connection. And sometimes, even a misplaced flip-flop could do the trick.
