The warm glow of low-hanging pendant lights bathed the nearly empty bar in a golden hue. It was closing time, and Gina sat alone at the far end, swirling the last sip of her martini as if it were a delicate treasure. Her legs were stretched out comfortably, her bare feet propped up on the chair across from her.
Jack, the bartender, leaned against the counter, tossing a bar towel over his shoulder as he watched her with an amused expression. "You know," he started, breaking the quiet hum of the room, "most people don't make themselves this comfortable in a bar. You're giving off 'queen of the castle' vibes."
Gina smirked, her fingers tracing the rim of her glass. "Well, if I'm the queen, shouldn't the staff be catering to me?"
Jack chuckled, walking around the bar to stand near her. "Queen, huh? If royalty looks like a pair of bare feet on my furniture, I think I'll pass."
She laughed, flexing her toes lazily. "Oh, come on, Jack. Don't act like you haven't seen worse on this side of the counter."
"True," he admitted, taking the seat across from her. "But you're making it hard to focus with all the wiggling. Tell me, Gina, are those feet as pampered as they look? Or do they just get the royal treatment from strappy heels all day?"
Gina tilted her head, her smirk deepening. "Wouldn't you like to know?"
Jack grinned, leaning his elbows on the table. "I would, actually. Let's test something." Without warning, he reached out and lightly dragged his finger along the arch of her nearest foot.
The reaction was immediate. Gina flinched and let out a burst of laughter, pulling her foot back instinctively. "Oh, you sneakyâJack!" she gasped, her voice a mix of surprise and amusement.
"Ah-ha!" Jack said triumphantly, leaning back in his chair. "Ticklish. Just as I suspected."
Gina narrowed her eyes, though her smile betrayed her. "You're lucky I didn't spill my drink, or you'd have stay later to scrubbing the floor." She teased.
Jack chuckled, his gaze lingering on her. "Fair point. But, come on, admit itâyou needed a laugh."
Gina relaxed again, setting her glass down. "Maybe," she conceded, her voice softer. She propped one foot back up on the chair, this time purposefully. "If you're going to pull that again, though, I should warn youâthese feet are lethal weapons when provoked."
Jack laughed, shaking his head. "Noted." He stood, picking up her empty glass. "But hey, if I managed to get a laugh out of the queen, I think my shift's ending on a high note."
Gina watched him walk back behind the bar, her smile lingering. Before he could disappear completely, she grabbed a cocktail napkin, scribbled her number on it, and slid it across the table.
"For your next court appearance," she quipped, leaning back with a satisfied grin.
Jack glanced down at the napkin and then back at her, his smile growing. "Best tip I've gotten all year."
As Gina slipped her shoes on and headed toward the door, she glanced back one last time. "Goodnight, Jack."
"Goodnight, Gina," he replied, tucking the napkin into his pocket as the door clicked shut behind her.
With a satisfied sigh, Jack turned off the lights, locking up the bar. The faint jazz playing in the background echoed into the still night.
