Chapter 27: Ticklish Shoe Store Fittings

The afternoon sunlight filtered through the vintage shoe store's glass door as Jessica stepped inside, her sneakers squeaking slightly against the polished wooden floor. She glanced around at the cozy space—lined with shelves filled with every type of shoe imaginable, from polished leather loafers to strappy summer sandals. A tall young man behind the counter, probably in his early twenties, looked up and gave her a shy smile.

"Hi, welcome!" he said, stepping around the counter and adjusting his name tag that read "Greg". "Uh, can I help you find something?"

Jessica smiled warmly, instantly picking up on his slight nervousness. "I'm looking for sandals," she said, lifting one sneakered foot for emphasis. "Something cute, comfortable, and most importantly—big enough. I'm like the anti-Cinderella over here, trying to find a slipper that fits."

Greg chuckled nervously, already feeling the heat creep up his neck. "Got it. Uh, what size?"

"Ten and a half," Jessica said with a playful wince. "Not exactly easy to find."

Greg nodded. "No problem. Let me grab a few options from the back. Feel free to sit anywhere."

Jessica made her way to a cushioned armchair near the center of the store, kicking off her sneakers and socks. She stretched her legs out, enjoying the cool air on her bare feet, and called after him, "Take your time, Greg. I'm counting on you to make me feel like a sandal princess."

Greg returned a few moments later, carrying a small stack of boxes. "Okay," he said, setting them down near the footstool in front of her chair. "Let's see what we've got."

Jessica propped her right foot on the stool and watched as Greg knelt down and unboxed the first pair of sandals. He adjusted one strap, then hesitated. "Uh, do you mind if I...?"

"Go for it," Jessica said, holding her foot still. "You're the expert."

Greg carefully slipped the sandal onto her foot and reached to fasten the buckle. His fingers brushed the side of her sole, and Jessica let out an involuntary giggle, pulling her foot back slightly. "Oh, wow, okay," she said, laughing. "That's... really ticklish."

Greg's face turned red as he stammered, "Sorry! I didn't mean..."

"It's fine!" Jessica reassured him, grinning. "Just, uh, proceed with caution. That's a danger zone."

Greg smiled sheepishly and tried again, this time focusing on the buckle. But as he adjusted the strap, his fingers accidentally grazed the arch of her foot, sending Jessica into another burst of laughter. She pulled her foot away, holding her stomach. "Okay, are you sure you're not trying to tickle me into buying these?"

Greg laughed nervously, finally relaxing a little. "That's actually not part of the training manual, I swear."

Jessica, still giggling, waved him off. "It's okay. Here, let's even the playing field." She held out her other foot, wiggling her toes. "See if you can get this one on without breaking me."

Greg took a deep breath, determined to succeed this time. But as he slid the second sandal onto her foot, his fingers accidentally grazed her arch again. Jessica leaned back in the chair, laughing uncontrollably. "Oh my god, Greg! You're worse than my little cousins!"

Greg was laughing now, too, the tension between them gone. "Hey, this is harder than it looks," he said, holding up his hands in mock defense. "I'm just trying to do my job!"

"Well, you're doing great," Jessica said through her laughter, wiping tears from her eyes. "Honestly, this is the most fun I've ever had shoe shopping."

Greg smiled, finally fastening the sandal. "There. All set."

Jessica admired the sandals, then nodded approvingly. "You've earned your employee-of-the-month badge for this. These are perfect."

As Greg helped her to the register, Jessica leaned against the counter and teased, "You know, I almost feel bad for making you work so hard. Almost."

Greg laughed, scanning the box. "Well, you made it interesting. That counts for something."

Jessica handed him her card and smiled. "You're a good sport, Greg. Thanks for making this whole Cinderella thing worth it."

He handed her the bag with a bashful smile. "Anytime."

As Jessica walked out the door, sandals in hand, she turned back and called, "See you around, Greg!"

Greg watched her go, shaking his head with a grin. "Cinderella's got nothing on her," he muttered.
