Chapter 3: Laughter in the Newsroom

The newsroom was quieter than usual, the chaos of breaking stories replaced by the soft hum of computers and the occasional ringing phone. Jessica, a seasoned reporter, plopped into her chair with a long sigh, kicking off her black heels under the desk. "Six hours. Six hours covering that fire," she groaned. "And this—" she gestured to her bare soles now propped on the desk, "—is the aftermath of walking around in soot and ash. True life: reporter feet."

Mike, her younger coworker at the next desk over, glanced at her feet and smirked. "Crusty doesn't even begin to describe the condition those feet are in, Jess. Those are battle-worn."

Lisa, a producer on the team, spun her chair around and snorted. "Crusty? That's generous. Those soles look like they've been hiking through a swamp."

Jessica rolled her eyes but couldn't help laughing. "You know what? No judgment zone, okay? You both would be crying after an hour out there."

Mike leaned back in his chair, a mischievous grin forming. "You know, Jess, we should help you clean those poor, crusty feet."

Jessica raised an eyebrow. "Oh, please, as if you two would survive the sight, let alone touch them."

"Oh, we'll see about that," Mike replied, reaching for a tissue box on his desk. Jessica's eyes widened as she started to retract her feet, but Mike was faster.

With a quick flick of the napkin across her sole, Jessica yelped and burst into laughter. "Mike! Stop that! I'm ticklish!" she squealed, squirming in her chair as Mike continued his 'cleaning' mission.

Lisa clapped her hands in delight. "Oh, this just got so much better!" She grabbed her water bottle and tipped it, letting a few droplets land on Jessica's other foot.

Jessica gasped at the cold water and kicked her legs, causing the napkin to fall from Mike's hand. "I swear, you two are children!"

"Hey, we're just trying to help!" Mike teased, retrieving the napkin. As he bent down, he noticed a hairbrush sitting at the edge of Jessica's desk. A glint of mischief crossed his face.

"Oh no," Jessica said, spotting the brush. "Don't you even—"

But before she could finish, Mike grabbed the brush and gently dragged the bristles across her sole. The reaction was immediate. Jessica threw her head back, howling with laughter as her legs thrashed. "Mike, you're evil!" she cried between gasps.

Lisa leaned over, adding more water droplets to Jessica's other foot. "Gotta rinse before the scrub!"

The combination of water and the hairbrush sent Jessica into hysterics. She pounded the desk, tears forming in her eyes from laughing so hard. "I hate both of you!" she choked out, though her wide grin betrayed her true feelings.

"Okay, okay, let's check if we've made any progress," Mike said, pretending to inspect her sole. He squinted, then dramatically shook his head. "Hmm, nope, still crusty."

Jessica glared at him, her laughter bubbling over again. "Mike, you are so fired."

Ignoring her protests, Mike resumed brushing the sole of her foot. Jessica's laughter went into overdrive, her voice bouncing around the newsroom. "MIKE!! I swear!" she shrieked, flailing her arms as her other leg kicked aimlessly.

"Don't worry, Jess, we're getting there!" Mike said, feigning professionalism as he kept brushing.

Finally, Jessica managed to yank her foot free and snatch the hairbrush from Mike's hand. "That's it!" she said, breathless but grinning. "I'm done with you two."

She began to slip her shoes back on but paused, noticing one shoe was missing. "Wait—where's my other—" She turned just in time to see Mike holding up her other shoe with a smug grin.

"Looking for this?" he teased, backing away.

"Mike, don't you dare—" But before she could finish, Mike darted off, holding the shoe aloft like a trophy.

"Give it back!" Jessica yelled, hobbling after him with one shoe on. Her uneven gait made her wobble hilariously, which only added to Lisa's laughter as she watched the scene unfold.

"You're going to have to catch me first!" Mike called over his shoulder, weaving between desks as Jessica pursued him.

"Mike, I will end you!" Jessica hollered, her tone both serious and playful.

After a few laps around the newsroom, Jessica finally cornered Mike and snatched the shoe from his hand. "You are the worst!" she said, slipping it back onto her foot and trying to look dignified.

Mike raised his hands in mock surrender, still grinning. "You gotta admit, that was funny."

Lisa wiped a tear from her eye and added, "This has to go in the newsroom bloopers reel."

Jessica groaned but couldn't stop herself from laughing along. "You two are impossible," she said, straightening her dress. "I seriously need new coworkers."

As she walked back to her desk, Mike called after her, "If you need more cleaning tips, you know where to find us!"

Jessica shook her head, her smile lingering. Deep down, she knew she wouldn't trade her ridiculous coworkers for the world.
