Laynaâs actions were extreme and unexpected.
Reagan grabbed Laynaâs hand roughly, snapping, âYou think I want to be here? If I werenât here, youâd be on the streets begging or back at the orphanage.â
Layna shook off Reaganâs grip, moving to stand by Anastasiaâs side. She was on the brink of tears. âI have a mom. I want to live with my mom.â
If Layna hadnât been so wickedly manipulative, Anastasia might have considered adopting her, to keep Pattie company. However, Layna relentlessly attempted to outshine Pattie, even resorting to endangering her, which made Anastasia hesitate.
Reagan got to his feet, pointing at Layna and shouting, âAnastasia isnât your real mom. You were born to a life of hardship with me. You donât have the luck to be Ms. Anastasiaâs daughter. Now, come with me or youâll be begging on the streets.â
âNo, I am momâs daughter!â Layna clung to Anastasiaâs hand, crying, âMom, Iâm sorry. Iâll never hurt Pattie again. Iâll be good, and Iâll take care of Pattie. I donât want to leave with Reagan.â
Layna had heard Salma talking about their upcoming move to a new house, which was a grand mansion like those from the TV shows. It had a team of housekeepers and servants. She had been dreaming of a princess-like life. Her mind was filled with dreams of countless toys and pretty clothes.
Layna looked at Anastasia in anticipation. Anastasia, however, was oblivious to the thoughts in Laynaâs mind. Seeing Laynaâs tears stirred something in her. Perhaps becoming a mother had softened her heart.
But it was only a momentary softening. She stuck to her decision. âLayna, your father loves you too. Go with him. Focus on your studies. Live a good life. Iâll come to see you.â
âI donât want to.â Laynaâs tears continued to flow. âMom, I want to go with you. You promised me. You said I would have my own room in the new house.â
âEnough with the crying.â Reagan grabbed Laynaâs arm. âAnastasia isnât your real mother. Iâm your legal guardian. Stop trying to cling to her. I know what you want â a comfortable life with her. But thatâs not your fate.â
He didnât care whether Layna wanted to go or not. He just dragged her out of the house. Salma tried to intervene. âHey, go easy on her. Sheâs just a kidâ¦â
âI know what Iâm doing,â Reagan retorted, picking up Layna and tucking her under his arm. âAnastasia, Iâll take this brat back with me.â
Anastasia stood up. âReagan, I suggest you find a different way to deal with her. The more you push, the more sheâll resist.â
âIâm just short-tempered.â Reagan shrugged, and then left, still carrying Layna. âLetâs go.â
Layna struggled, yelling, âReagan, let me go! I donât want to go with you. Iâm supposed to be rich. I want my real mom. Help, Reaganâs kidnapping meâ¦â
Salma watched, stunned. âThat girl⦠is such a rebel.â
Anastasia watched as Reagan and Layna left, murmuring, âI hope Layna realizes sheâs actually got a good father.â
No matter how much Layna yelled or even bit him, Reagan only frowned, never hitting her.
His harshness was all talk.
After theyâd left, Anastasia said, âMom, letâs go back to the hospital. Monicaâs alone there with Pattie.â
Anastasia had just stepped out of the café when her phone rang. It was Monica. âAna, Grannie Anitaâs here. She knows Pattie is your daughter and sheâs making à scene.â
Hearing this, Anastasia hurried towards the hospital.
