MARDICHI
It was a few blissful days of Mardichi playing with the tiny redhead. Her tinkling laughter filled his heart with joy in a way heâd thought heâd never feel again. He lay on his back. With her lifted above him. Moving her around in the air as though she were flying while she held her arms out, laughing as the air rushed past her.
âDaddy?â
Such a wonderful word. I never got to hear Liam say it.
âYes, Liasa?â
âWhen is mommy coming?â
Ouch.
âDo you miss her?â He stopped moving her around to look deeply into her light blue eyes.
She nodded emphatically. âI do.â
âMe too.â He whispered. Lowering her to kiss the tip of her tiny noise. âItâs going to take me a bit to go find her.â
âYou should!â She squealed excitedly. Putting her arms back out to fly some more.
Soon as I find her. He thought. Sheâs coming back one way or another.
Heâd already spent the last day and a half feeling deep remorse for taking his wifeâs daughter.
Sheâs probably terribly worried.
And he knew full well Zuriena was a good mother. As evidenced by her mad flight to the cottage to get to her little one.
âHow would you like to go to a magical place?â He whispered.
âMagical?â She blinked huge blue eyes.
âMagical.â
âVery much!â She said breathlessly. âWould you like to see a castle made of water?â
âOohâ¦â She blinked slowly. âAnd its king?â
Mardichi grimaced. âAnd itâs king.â
âIs he wise?â
âNo.â Mardichi shook his head emphatically.
âCharming?â
Mardichi shrugged grudgingly.
âHandsome?â
Mardichi grunted. âLetâs speak of more pleasant things.â Standing, he hunkered over to hang his hand low enough to take her tiny one. It fit comfortably in his massive one.
Sheâs like a tiny flame in my world. He thought. Seeing her like a spark of life in a dead world.
Not entirely dead. And his jaw set as he decided to take the little one up to WaterRose.
So, I can go find my other spark. He stamped down the rage that rose at the thought.
âWill ye help me?â
Bast looked a little deflated as his eyes traversed from Mardichi to the tiny little redhead holding the barbarianâs massive hand. âYou know it will be difficult for me, Iâve much else going on.â
âI need ta go in search of âer mother.â
âI thought youâd found her?â He gestured to Liasa.
âI did but then me lost âer again.â
When I took Liasa and marched out.
âYou have the hardest time keeping tabs on your woman.â
Mardichi glowered. âIs this a discussion ye truly wish ta âave?â
âI know where mine is! Iâm very good at keeping tabs on her. Just very poor at tempting her back.â
âWell, thatâs precisely what me intend ta find out.â He crouched to kiss his daughterâs forehead then cover her ears as he looked up at Bast. âIf me can refrain from strangling âer.â
Bast laughed at the jest.
âWhat? What did you say?â The girl blinked large doe eyes.
âSome secrets must be atween men.â
âWhy?â She pouted.
âBecause lasses are far too clever fer such meager issues as may plague men.â
She nodded gravely.
Mardichi stood and leaned toward Bast. âTake care. She may be the most lovely thing me ever saw.â
âShe is quite remarkable.â Bast grinned and crouched before her.
âNo!â Mardichi covered Bastâs eyes. âDonât look in them, Sweet Girl.â
Bast looked up at him mockingly. âI have it quite in check this moment.â
âI didna even know ye could do thaâ.â Mardichiâs hand dropped. He glowered. âAfter all this time?â
âIt takes great concentration.â He averted his attention back to the child. âDid you have great fun with your father?â
âOh, indeed!â She proclaimed. Swinging the large hand still holding hers.
âDid he listen to you?â
âOh, yes!â She leaned forward to confide. âHe says heâd do anything I asked.â
âDid he?â
âYes, so I told him I want a doll as beautiful as my mother.â
Bast looked at her incredulously. âDo they make dolls so lovely?â
âI donâtâ¦Knowâ¦â She said in shock.
âIâm noâ sure they could.â Mardichi murmured. âWell little lass,â He leaned to press another tender kiss to the red curls at her forehead. âIâll soon return. With yer mum.â
He turned and grumbled. âWillingly or nay.â
She hopped up and down clapping. âThen go quick Daddy.â She pushed on his leg. Shoving at the huge immovable limb. âSo, you may return all the faster!â
The huge man tossed his head back and rumbled with hearty laughter. A laugh Bast hadnât heard in much time.
Bast caught up to him to speak in a low voice away from the child. âYou cannot leave before the ball.â Bast said. âIt going to be grand, indeed.â
Mardichi groaned.
âIâd do it for you.â Bast pointed out.
âYea. Ye would.â
âCome Liasa.â Bast returned and waited for her to fall into step with him. âThereâs someone you must meet. She will love you! Elengard!â
