Not bad. Not bad at all. Just two left to max.
Rain smiled. Today was going to be a good day. He was feeling fully recovered, all of his offensive skills were maxed, and IFF was good to go. It was time to take on the dungeon again.
This is going to be a walk in the park.
He closed all of his windows and got up, stretching. Heâd decided against spending a skill point on Mana Manipulation until theyâd returned from the dungeon. Otherwise, heâd be tempted to just burn mana on it for training while they explored the lair, rather than focusing on the delve as he should.
Iâve got some choices to make when it comes to skills. I can take that Aura Compression thing now, but Iâm never going to get Prismatic Intent if I donât actually put points in Auras. Mana Manipulation sounds necessary, but maybe I can just pay someone to recharge the armor instead. I donât have many points left to play with if I want to get it before level 25. I really need to talk to this Staavo person. I might be hoarding these points for nothing. Iâll ask Ameliah instead. She probably knows.
âHey Ameliah,â Rain said. âYouâre above level 25, right?â
âYes, what about it?â Ameliah said, looking at him.
âHow does the level 25 class upgrade work?â As he asked this, Jamus and Val looked over with interest. Carten was still asleep, and Tallheart was busy grilling a piece of crawler vine on Jamusâs griddle.
âItâs pretty similar to the one at level 5,â Ameliah said with a shrug. âYou get to pick a Class from those you meet the requirements for. The difference is, you also get to pick Specializations.â
âWhat are Specializations, exactly?â Jamus said. âIâve heard of them, but how are they different from what I already have? Arcane Mage isnât exactly rare, but itâs definitely more specialized than the base class.â
âSo you are an Arcane Mage after all,â Val said. âI knew Mage was too basic for you. I pity anyone who gets stuck with it.â
âForget that,â Carten said, yawning and sitting up to join the conversation. âPity the fools who get stuck with Worker.â
Tallheart made an annoyed rumble. âDo not look down on others. I used to be a Metalworker.â
Val scoffed. âBah. I know someoneâs got to make the armor and swords and stuff, butâwait. âUsed to be?â As in, youâre something else? As in, youâre above level 25 too? Fuck me. Rain, where do you find these people?â He looked between Ameliah and Tallheart, then sighed.
Rain laughed, then shrugged. Damn. I could have asked Tallheart about class upgrades ages ago. Why didnât I think of that? I can be a real moron sometimes.
âSpecializations are straightforward,â Ameliah said. She looked at Jamus. âYou already have one, at least in effect. Arcane Mage raises the cap for the Arcane Mysteries tree, correct?
âYes. So thatâs all a Specialization is?â
Ameliah shook her head. âNo, not really. At level 5, you can only get something like a Specialization if you take a class that specifically focuses on one tree of skills. Itâs not really the same. It isnât as strong, for one thing.â
Rain raised his hand. âWhat did you mean by âraises the capâ?â
âAll of my skills in Arcane Mysteries have a maximum level of 13, not 10,â Jamus said.
Rain tilted his head. âWait, I thought the only thing that could raise the cap of a skill was a rare enchantment. Tallheart said as much.â
âI do not remember saying that,â Tallheart said. âAre you sure you are remembering correctly?â
âPretty sure,â Rain said. âLet me think.â He knew heâd discussed something like this with him, but the exact wording eluded him. Come on overmana, do your thing. He concentrated, trying to recall the conversation with Tallheart.
â¦Damn it. I canât remember. Maybe I can give myself a boost.
He closed his eyes and activated Winter Nova. He was briefly distracted as he realized he needed to come up with a new name for that. Winter Focus? Endless Winter? Itâs less like an explosion and more like aâ¦never mind. Think. Tallheart. Clearing. Talking about skillsâ¦
â¦
â¦
A hazy scene formed in Rainâs mind. He focused harder. He could see Tallheartâs clearing and the face of the antlered man staring at him. The surroundings were vague, like a dream. Only Tallheartâs face was in clear focus, wearing a pained expression as if something was bothering him. Then, his view flickered and Tallheartâs face was stern for a second before it snapped back into sadness. He heard himself start to speak, his words echoing strangely, fading in and out.
[âHey, you know what happens when a skill reaches rank 10?â]
[âYes. And you want me to tell you.â]
[âYeahâ]
[âYou have mastered it. That is all.â]
[âThatâs it? No reward?â]
[âCorrect.â]
[âDamn it. So ten is the limit?â]
[âPerhaps not. It is possible toââ]
[âHow?â]
[âPowerful equipment can increase the cap of a skill. My armorâ¦â]
Rain shook his head and dropped Aura Focus. âWoah. That wasâ¦wow. Go overmana. Sorry, Tallheart, youâre right. You didnât actually say that. All you said was that an enchantment could do it. Not that other things couldnât. Still, why didnât you tell me about Specializations?â
Tallheart shook his head. âI do not remember discussing this at all.â
âNever mind, I guess,â Rain said with a shrug. Iâm not even sure that is what he actually said. Everything was allâ¦weird. Iâll have to play with flashback mode later. He turned to Ameliah. âSorry, where were we? So at level 25, you get to pick a Specialization, even if you donât have a specialized class? Does it raise the cap by another 3?â
âNo,â Ameliah said. âIt increases it by 5. In Jamusâs case, he could specialize in Arcane Mysteries, adding 5 and bringing the cap up to 18. Thatâs assuming he sticks with Arcane Mage as the base class. Most specialized classes have a direct evolution that preserves or enhances the effects. Thatâs one of the advantages of taking one.â
âThatâs the plan,â Jamus said. âI might get there one dayâ¦â
âOh, so thatâs how it works,â Val said, nodding to himself.
Rain looked at him. âYou didnât know about this either? Youâre about as focused as it gets.â Oops, light-based pun not intended. I donât think they noticed. He shook his head. âYouâre a Light Mage, right?â
âSomething like that.â Val grinned.
Carten swatted him. âYouâre making certain people very annoyed by refusing to tell us what it is.â
Ameliah smiled. âI donât blame him. Donât even bother asking me what my Class is. Iâm not going to tell you. I doubt Tallheart will either. It simply isnât done.â
âMmm,â Tallheart rumbled. âI do not mind. I have grown to trust you. You are not bad, for humans. Iâ¦am a Runic Powersmith. I doubt you have met another.â
Jamus laughed and patted Tallheart on the shoulder. âThatâs for sure. Still, Tallheart, you shouldnât really spread that around. You need to be careful.â
Tallheart tilted his head. âThey already know I am above level twenty-five. It makes no difference. Perhaps if you would stop bringing strange people to my clearingâ¦â He trailed off.
Jamus shrugged, holding out his palms in an expression that said âthatâs fairâ.
âRunicâ¦Powersmith?â Rain said. âTallheart, how are you so metal?â
âWhat does that expression mean?â Tallheart said, tilting his head. âYou have used it before. I do not understand.â
âOh, right, sorry. Metal is a type of music. Itâs like rock, but way moreâ¦intense? Sorry, you donât know what rock is either⦠Damn. Also, thereâs different kinds, whole sub-genres. If something is âmetalâ, it meansâ¦how do I describe this? I donât think I can really translate without context. Letâs just go with âepicâ. If something is âmetalâ it means it is epic, but thereâs a lot of subtextâ¦â
Carten laughed. âLittle Mouse, you really suck at explaining things.â
Rain smiled and shrugged. âSo Iâve been told. Anyway, Runic Powersmith would be a great name for a metal band. Whatâs it do?â
âIt lets me make things that are epic,â Tallheart said.
Rain grinned. âTallheart, was that a joke, or are you being literal? Are there âepicâ items?â
âA very small joke,â Tallheart said, the corner of his mouth quirked up slightly. For Tallheart, that was as good as a grin. âIt provides bonuses to my metalworking and runecrafting skills that scale with Strength. The Specializations I have chosen further increase those skills.â
âSpecializations, plural?â Rain asked. He looked at Ameliah. âYou get more than one?ân/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
âYes,â she said. âCommon class progressions like High Mage get two. Arcane Mage is Uncommon at level 5. The class progression would likely also be Uncommon, though I cannot speak to that. There could also be a Rare progression. That would mean either three or four available specializations. Legendary classes get five.â
âWait, Legendary?â Rain said. âHow high do class tiers go?â
âLegendary is the limit, as far as anyone knows,â Jamus said. âOf course, there are rumors of higher tiers, but no confirmed reports.â
âI seeâ¦â Rain said. Dynamo is already Rare⦠âDoes anyone know the class progression for Dynamo?â
Ameliah nodded. âThere are two. High Dynamo, which is Rare and has a similar requirement to the base class, and thenâ¦Legendary Dynamo, though that isnât the real name. That gets personalized for all legendary classes.â Rain didnât miss her glance at Tallheart as she said this.
âWhatâs the requirement?â he asked. Tallheart really is a Legendary Blacksmith after all. Thatâs so cool.
âPure Clarity. Not a single point spent elsewhere,â Ameliah said.
Rain looked up. âIt canât be that simple, can it? I was going to do that anyway...â
Val laughed. âHa. And I thought I was insane.â
âYou are,â Rain said. âGoing straight Clarity is easy, compared to that crazy shit you had to pull. Soloing an essence monster? What the hell kind of requirement is that? Honestly, why doesnât everyone take a monolithic if they know about the Legendary upgrade?â
âMost adventurers donât start with such a high cap,â Jamus said. âThere is only one Dynamo that Iâve ever heard of reaching goldplate. Picking a class that starts off so weak is a gamble. People who do tend to get stuck working behind a desk in the Guild.â
âOr they die,â Carten said. âYouâre lucky youâve got us around, Little Mouse.â
Rain ignored him. âWhoâs the other Dynamo? Anyone Iâve met?â
âNo, she died years and years ago,â Jamus said. âSheâs somewhat famous in the Guild. Her name was Angela, I think, but most people just refer to her as âEndlessâ. If you believe the stories, she once kept up a barrage of Fireballs for three whole days.â
That sounds like a name for a superhero, not an adventurer. Goldplate, huh? âIs there another class upgrade at level 50?â
Ameliah nodded. âI donât know much about it, though. It isâ¦frustrating. Very few people in the entire world reach that level, and those that do donât like to share.â
Humm. âIn the whole worldâ... So that big blue bastard Halgrave really is a big deal, and not just around here either. âHas anyone ever made it to level 100?â
âSure,â Jamus said. âThe gods.â
Carten looked at him. âAww, come on Jamus. I didnât think you believed that crap.â
âI like it,â Jamus said with a shrug. âGives us mortals something to strive for.â
Rain paused. âAt the risk of leading us off topic, are the godsâ¦real? Do theyâ¦interact with people, or is it all justâ¦belief?â
âThe gods care little for the affairs of mortals,â Val said. âAt least, thatâs what I believe.â
âBah, who cares, as long as they leave me be,â said Carten. âNo godâs ever done nothinâ for me, and I donât need em to. When are we goinâ back in the lair, anyway? Iâm ready.â
âWait, Carten, I still have more questions,â Rain said.
âYou always have more questions,â Jamus said, laughing.
Rain forged ahead, shifting back to his original line of inquiry. âSo, Specializations, do they have requirements, orâ¦?â
âIt is straightforward, as I said,â Ameliah replied. âThere is a Specialization for every skill tree. The requirement is 5 skills in that tree, all at rank 10 or higher. Before you ask, no, there arenât any hidden or rare Specializations. None that Iâve heard of, anyway. Just 5 points in a skill tree. Thatâs it.â
Rain considered this, then pulled open his skills window. Oh. This changes things. I need to thinkâ¦
âHah, that did it,â Carten said. âHeâs starinâ off into space again. Letâs have breakfast while we wait.â
