Abhimanyu

I ran my fingers through my hair, trying to shake off the nervous energy that seemed to settle into my chest. It had been a while since I felt this way—nervous, unsure, but also a little excited. The text from Subhi was still fresh in my mind. “Let’s meet after school.” She didn’t just say it; she asked me, waited for me to make a decision.

And I did.

But now, standing outside the school gate as the final bell rang, I couldn’t stop myself from overthinking. What was I supposed to say? What was I supposed to do? I hadn’t been in a situation like this in... well, in forever. Not since my sister, not since everything fell apart.

I shoved my hands into my pockets and sighed. This was ridiculous. I shouldn’t be this nervous about a simple meeting with her. It was just Subhi. Just the girl who somehow wormed her way into my life, making things feel easier without even trying.

I glanced down at my phone. I had messaged her back, kept it casual, but every word felt like it was too much or too little. Was I pushing her away with my uncertainty? Or was I just being honest? I couldn't even tell anymore.

My stomach did a little flip, and I resisted the urge to text her again. What was I doing? What did she want from me? We hadn’t talked about what was between us—if anything. But now that I was standing here, staring down the idea of being with her alone, I realized just how much I didn’t know.

I looked at the spot where we’d agreed to meet. Subhi had always been easy to talk to. Her words, the way she laughed, how she listened so intently when I spoke—everything about her made me feel less like a stranger in my own skin. And now I was terrified of ruining it.

I waited. The sound of chatter from the students leaving school around me faded into the background. My heart thudded in my chest, louder than anything. Was I even good enough for this? For her?

I didn’t know how much longer I could stand there, feeling like I was drowning in my thoughts. And then, I saw her.

She was walking toward me, a little unsure, her eyes darting around as though she was just as nervous as I was. Her presence made the world seem quieter, softer, and somehow everything felt right.

I straightened up, watching her take her time, her steps slower than usual, like she was unsure of how to approach me. I could see the uncertainty in her eyes, the same one I was feeling. But then she looked up and met my gaze, and for a moment, everything felt... simpler. Like we didn’t have to figure it all out right now.

“Hey,” she said, her voice a little softer than usual.

“Hey,” I replied, a slight smile tugging at my lips. My hands, which had been clenched in my pockets, suddenly felt too warm, too tight. I shifted on my feet, unsure of where to put them, what to do.

There was a long moment of silence between us, the kind where you don’t know whether you should speak or wait for the other person to say something. But it wasn’t awkward. It was the kind of silence that made everything feel like it had potential.

“I wasn’t sure if you’d want to meet today,” she said quietly, her eyes searching mine for something—maybe reassurance, maybe a sign that we were both on the same page.

I exhaled a shaky breath, trying to shake off the tension that had been building inside me all day. “I wasn’t sure either,” I admitted, my voice raw with honesty. “But I’m glad we’re doing this. Glad we’re here.”

Her lips parted, and I could see her fighting the urge to smile. “Me too,” she said softly.

It felt like we were standing on the edge of something big, something that could either break us or bring us closer. But in that moment, I didn’t care about what might happen next. All I cared about was that she was standing in front of me, looking at me like she wasn’t afraid.

“I’m glad you texted me,” I said, my voice low, almost a whisper.

Subhi nodded, a little smile playing at the corners of her mouth. “I’m glad I did too,” she replied.

We stood there, facing each other, unsure of the next step, but I could feel the air between us shift. Maybe we didn’t need to know everything right now. Maybe all we needed was to be here. Together.

“I don’t know what happens after this,” I said, the words coming out more honestly than I meant them to.

She met my gaze, her eyes soft. “Neither do I,” she said. “But I’m okay with that.”

I took a deep breath, feeling the weight of everything I had been avoiding for so long finally start to lift. Maybe this was it. Maybe we were on the brink of something worth fighting for.

And for the first time in a long time, I was willing to let myself believe that it was.
