âEvelyn snagged it for me. Plus, I think a traditional breakfast hits the spot just right.â Callum flashed a hint of a smile, his eyes locked on Thalassa. His lips curled in amusement, but a shadow of disquiet lurked in his gaze.
The message Evelyn left on Thalassaâs voicemail earlier didnât need any decoding, especially not for a grown man like Callum.
She spent the night with Lysander.
Despite knowing that she and Lysander had been intimate before, sharing four kids between them, the stark realization of what Thalassa and Lysander had done felt like a lump in Callumâs throat.
âYeah, I just grabbed the breakfast for him. You sit, I'll fetch you some grub,â Evelyn said, starting to stand.
âMom, sit down. I can get it myself,â Thalassa insisted.
As Thalassa walked toward the buffet, Evelyn settled back into her seat with a sigh. "When will this ever end?"
Callum, attempting to lighten the mood, reassured her, âThere will come a day when weâll find a way through this. Letâs eat, Evelyn.â
With a gentle smile, he took a bite of his burger.
Evelyn nodded, biting into a donut, too. Neither mentioned the issue at hand again, but both knew exactly what weighed on their minds.
Thalassa and Lysander were like a modern-day Romeo and Juliet, a couple that burned fiercely despite knowing it could never be. That was the real concern.
Thalassa returned with a bowl of oatmeal with some salmon.
âYou used to hate salmon, didnât you? What made you change your mind?â Evelyn asked in surprise.
Picking up a piece of salmon with her fork, Thalassa replied, âI donât know. I just started liking them.â
âIt was when you were pregnant with the quads five years ago that your tastes changed. Who knows how many youâre carrying now,â Evelyn muttered.
Sitting right beside them, Callum overheard the comment. A chill ran up his spine. âYouâre pregnant?â
he asked, his voice tinged with a mix of astonishment and pain.
Thalassa continued to eat her oatmeal and salmon calmly, confirming, âYeah, almost two months.â She had been pregnant the last time when she ran off to the Weston Country with Callum, but she hadnât known it then.
Hearing her affirmation, the sense of loss in Callumâs eyes deepened.
âMr. Gordon, shall I get you something to drink?â Evelyn asked, attempting to ease the tension.
Callum looked down and quietly declined, âNo, thanks.â
She knew Callum was a good man, and she couldnât drag him into her personal hell. A silent rejection was the most decisive kind.
Callum forced a smile and said, âNo, they havenât.â Updated at Draмаnоvеls.cоm âYou silly girl, isnât Hertha hung up on that Alaric guy?â Evelyn chuckled.
