Then she continued wiping Elowenâs face, telling Evelyn, âMom, me and Mr. Sinclair arenât an itern or anything.â
âReally? That suit belongs to Mr. Sinclair, I saw him wearing it today at the Sinclair group, and I can recognize it, Thalassa. If youâre dating someone, I wouldnât mind, you donât have to hide it from me.â
Evelynâs sharp gaze fixed on Thalassa.
âI wore it because⦠Thalassa was about to explain, but then saw four pairs of small, confused, and innocent eyes staring at her.
If she spilled the beans about being kidnapped and nearly losing her reputation, the kids would definitely be upset. She didnât want her little angels to worry or suffer because of her. So she stopped the explanation, keeping the truth under wraps.
She picked up the spoon and continued serving salad, changing the subject, âIâll return the suit to Mr.
Sinclair tomorrow. Mom, your cooking is really tasty today.â
With that, she flashed Evelyn a bright smile, her eyes crinkling at the corners and two cute dimples appeared on her cheeks, making her look adorable and beautiful. Evelyn sensed her daughterâs reluctance and didnât press further.
Considering the kids were still young, and knowing adult stuff could be harmful to their growth, she let it slide too.
âIf you like it, have more.â Evelyn said, placing more food onto Thalassaâs plate.
That evening, Thalassa told bedtime stories to the kids.
One by one, they all drifted off to sleep.
www She put down the storybook, cradled the children in her arms, cuddling them gently. Their soft little bodies smelled of milk, it was really. comforting.
The next day was Saturday, a day off from work.
When Thalassa woke up, it was already late morning, and the bed beside her was empty. The children were already up.
Sunlight poured in from the window, warming her face. She stretched, yawning lazily, having had a good nightâs sleep. She got up, got herself ready, and after freshening up, she opened the door to see the four kids sitting on the sofa watching TV.
Evelyn and Astrid were chatting nearby. The scene was very harmonious and warm. This lifted her spirits, and she cheerfully greeted, âGood morning.â
âGood morning, Mom,â the four kids chimed in unison.
Evelyn glanced at her and said, âThe sunâs already high in the sky, you call this morning?â
Thalassa just smiled and didnât respond, admitting to herself she was the last one up. She tidied up her hair and headed to the kitchen for some grub.
Just as she pulled out a yogurt from the fridge, her phone buzzed. It was a neighbor from the village.
She quickly answered, âHello, Greta, whatâs up?â
âThalassa, werenât you looking for an emerald pendant? Did you find it? Greta from the village asked her Five years ago, a storm had collapsed Thalassaâs firewood shed and pigsty. Thalassa cleaned up the debris brick by brick, piece by piece. The neighbors were puzzled. If she was clearing the rubble, why not just shovel it all away at once? Wasnât she just wasting time and energy by clearing it bit by bit?
When they asked Thalassa why she was doing this, she said she was looking for something, an emerald pendant shaped like a cloud.
The neighborsâ question triggered Thalassaâs memory from five years ago. She tensed up, saying seriously, âI havenât found it yet, Iâm still looking.â
