He was the classic ladiesâ man. Men like him often had an uncanny knack for smooth talk.
Evelyn, who was initially boiling with rage, found her eyes filling with tears at his words.
Thalassa, seeing that things were spiraling out of control, knew that their ongoing standoff would have done no good for any of them. It would have only given the onlookers a good laugh and not resolved anything.
She collected herself and suggested, âItâs lunchtime now. Letâs head over to that restaurant and get a booth.â
Bruce, seeing a glimmer of hope, eagerly nodded, âSure thing.â
âWhat if I let go and you run?â Evelyn was skeptical and remained wary of trusting Bruce.
âI swear I wonât run. If I do, Iâm a low-life chicken.â Bruce assured.
Evelyn, still somewhat doubtful, glared at him for a moment before reluctantly releasing her grip.
True to his word, Bruce didnât flee. Instead, he quickly straightened his disheveled suit.
The trio made their way to a nearby restaurant, ordered a few dishes, and settled down in a booth.
Both Thalassa and Evelyn fixed their stern, hostile gazes on Bruce.
âI only just found out that you, Evelyn, invested three million in the fund. Donât worry. The returns on this fund are very high. In six months, youâll have earned hundreds of thousands in dividends.â Bruce said, maintaining a smile on his face.
âDonât lie to me. If itâs so easy to make money, why arenât you doing it?â Evelyn retorted, seething with anger.
âI simply donât have that kind of money,â Bruce replied, chuckling. âSpeaking of which, who did you get all that money from? Lysander, right? I knew it. Thalassa and Lysander are close, arenât they? She bore him four kids. Lysander would never let her downâ¦â
As Bruce spoke, his eyes gleamed with greed.
Thalassa detected his calculating intentions and immediately became alert. âYouâve got it all wrong.
That three million was a loan my mother took out for a house. You better pay her back now.â
il âYou have no collateral or assets. What did you use to secure a loan? When you borrow money from a bank, you need to provide collateral.â Bruce countered. âIf I were to repay you right now, Iâd lose the job Iâve worked so hard to secure. Speaking of which, you, Thalassa, bear a large part of the blame for me losing my previous job.â
With a gentlemanly smile, Bruce uttered the most infuriating words.
Evelyn, in a fit of rage, lunged forward to hit him.
Thalassa held her back. âMom, calm down. Iâll call the police and let them investigate.â
âEven if the police come, theyâll say the same thing. You willingly invested in the fund. Thatâs considered investment, and investment comes with risks. If you lose money, thereâs nothing the police can do.â Bruce was then noticeably more relaxed compared to before.
He realized that their company was legally compliant and had nothing to fear from an investigation. As for Evelynâs investment, whether it made a profit or loss was entirely up to him.
âYouâre shameless, a fraud, and a big scammer!â Evelyn glared furiously at him. Her breath was ragged.
âLetâs not get so worked up. Today, letâs have a nice family chat about how we can make more money.â
Bruce suggested, a smile playing on his lips.
Thalassa clenched her fists in anger but was helpless against him At that moment, the waitress came in with their food and placed it on the table. As she was leaving, she discreetly snapped a photo of the three at the table.
After she left, she showed the photo on her phone to a man in a black suit.
âGood work. Send the photo to my phone.â The man, who was a bodyguard, tipped the waitress and asked her to send him the photoi
