Lysanderâs mysterious eyes, filled with a piercing intensity, swept over Payne. âHow many kids do you have with your ex-wife?â
Payne was purposely irritating him, trying to get him to reveal his relationship with Thalassa.
But instead of getting angry, Lysander changed the subject and asked Payne about his children.
âTwo. The brother is two years older than the sister.â Payne answered.
âI have four. Quadruplets! Their mother is the woman you just met!â Lysanderâs eyes were deep as he stared at Payne, not directly bragging, but it was clearly depicted in his expression and words.
Payne was slightly taken aback, then chuckled, giving Lysanderâs shoulder a light pat. âGood for you, man. Since sheâs the mother of your kids, I can wait a bit longer for her. Who knows, she might become your ex-girlfriend.â
âBugger off!â Lysander aimed a kick at him.
Payne dodged, his face impassive but his words full of teasing, âLysander, your speed isnât up to scratch. Havenât practiced in years, have you? How did you end up with quadruplets?â
Lysanderâs handsome face became gloomy, staring at Payne. âMeet me in the hotelâs coffee room. We need to talk.â
He strode towards the coffee room, Payne following him with a slight smile.
Standing by the buffet table, Thalassa watched as Lysander and Payne left, feeling a bit lost. So Lysander and Payne knew each other.
And they seemed to be quite close.
No wonder Payne seemed so nonchalant when she was discussing the case with him earlier. As if he had no interest in it at all.
He even said he wasnât afraid of Lysanderâs power, but that he was just uninterested.
So the two were good friends. How could he possibly help an outsider against his own friend?
Thalassa had been hoping to get Payne in good spirits by offering him a drink, thinking he might agree to take on the case if he was in a good mood.
But now it seemed like a joke. He had made up his mind from the beginning.
Thalassa felt instantly defeated, her spirits crushed.
Not far away at a table, Hertha was sitting across from Alaric and another woman.
Her eyes filled with hostility as she looked at the woman sitting next to Alaric, forcing a smile. âWhat gave you the nerve to sit next to Alaric, Georgia?â
She recognized this woman. It was the same arrogant heiress she had encountered at the hotel!
Georgia, annoyed by Herthaâs words, was about to lash out when she had a change of heart. Instead, she took Alaricâs hand, her smile full of defiance as she met Herthaâs gaze, âWeâre about to get engaged. Thatâs what gave me the nerve. As for you, youâre just a stray. Mr. Falconer will get tired of you soon.â
Herthaâs eyes widened in shock, looking at Georgia holding Alaricâs hand, then at Alaric.
He didnât resist, his eyes examining Hertha.
Hertha became instantly unsettled, yanking Georgiaâs hand away, âLet go! Alaric canât stand you. How could he possibly get engaged to you? Youâre delusional! I wonât fall for your tricks!â
âYouâre so rude!â Georgia snarled at Hertha.
âIâm the heiress of the Reed Group. Isnât it normal for me to get engaged to him for a family alliance?
Who are you to judge?â Georgia, being spoiled and entitled, couldnât stand being criticized.
She could tolerate it for a moment, but that was her limit. Now, she had to make Hertha lose dignity.
Hertha, enraged, stood up abruptly, and crossed her arms, glaring at Georgia, âIf Iâm a stray, then youâre even less! Youâre the delusional one!â
