âIf you drink with that man and end up at a hotel, do you think your reputation will still remain clean?â
Alaricâs stunning eyes bore into her. There was a hint of sternness under his teasing tone.
Herthaâs heart skipped a beat as it dawned on her, âYouâre sayingâ¦the man earlier drugged the drinks?â
âYouâre as bright as a blackened light bulb!â It took him explaining it so explicitly for her to get it!
Alaric shot her a look of disdain and turned to leave.
Hertha was still in shock and her heart was pounding with dread. If it wasnât for Alaric, she would have been done for.
Seeing Alaric walking away, she rushed forward to grab his hand.
âLet go!â Alaric shook her off.
Herthaâs previously fierce expression turned into that of a starstruck fan. She no longer controlled the flutter in her heart and let her yearning for him shine through.
âAlaric, I was mean to you earlier. Iâm sorry, it was my fault. Please donât be mad at me.â
She weakly held onto one of his fingers and swayed it gently. She looked coquettish but she was mostly worried that he would ignore her.
âIâm not your boyfriend. I couldnât care less about being mad.â Alaric pulled his finger away from her.
âIâm sorry, okay? I was too harsh on you earlier. If it wasnât for you today, I would have ended up being some old manâs trophy or someoneâs pawn. Can I have a chance to thank you, please?â
Alaric glanced at her, âAnd how do you plan on thanking me?â
âUhm, what do you like?â Hertha asked after some thought.
Before Alaric could answer, her eyes lit up as she thought of something. Holding back a smile, she said, âYouâre a ladiesâ man, right? Iâm not wrong, am I?â
Wasnât he known to be a charming playboy?
Women were his favorite treat.
Alaric stared at her barely contained excitement and had his guard up, âWhat are you planning?â
âSince youâve saved me twice, I guess Iâm yours now. Tonight Iâm all yours. Howâs that for a surprise thank you?â
Herthaâs large round eyes sparkled as she looked at him, full of anticipation.
Alaric took a step back, shocked. He had never been scared of a woman before, this was a first.
He was starting to fear this feisty woman..
âHertha, canât you think of anything else?â
âWhat else should I think of? All I can think about is you.â Hertha stumbled forward, wrapping her arms around his; her face nuzzled against his arm.
The sleeves of Alaricâs shirt were rolled up, and her warm, even hot cheek against his arm sent a shudder through his heart.
He extended his other hand to pull her away, âHertha, youâre drunk, stop making a scene. Have some dignity; if not for yourself, then for me!â
Hertha clung onto him, not giving him the chance to pull her away, âIâm offering myself to you as a thank you; take me away!â
Alaricâs breath hitched. He wondered if she was really drunk or just pretending.
He was about to pull her away by the collar of her dress when a familiar male voice rang out, âHertha, is that really you?â
Alaric turned to look at the person. He stopped in his track as he saw a familiar face.
