"Stiles! Your hair, you took my advice!" Melody smiled walking to where the boys leaned against the jeep waiting for her outside the airport getting their attention.
"Hello to you too, Mel." Stiles smiled taking her bag wrapping an arm around her shoulder as she smiled at Scott.
"Hey Scottie." She grinned dropping her bags to hug him.
"So how was Crescent Cove?" Stiles asked after the boys helped her load her luggage into his trunk.
"It was really good, My band did a bunch of gigs back home. It was nice seeing all my friends again, definitely hard being back without my parents though." Melody replied getting in the backseat.
"That's awesome, we would've gone but Scott here worked all summer." Stiles dragged looking to his friend as he started the jeep up.
"I missed the ocean too, man I think I spent half the summer just swimming and hanging out with the pod of dolphins. Oh gosh! We had whales migrate through too it was so cool!" She exclaimed getting excited making the boy smile at her.
"That sounds amazing Mel." Scott smiled at her.
"Sooo did you-" Stiles started when Mel cut him off with a sigh knowing exactly where he was going.
"No Stiles, I haven't talked to Issac or Derek. Well Derek a bit but he sucks at answering so I gave up."
"So you didn't talk to him at all? All summer?" Scott asked looking back as Stiles
"No. He never answered me and I gave up." Mel shrugged not really wanting to talk about the wolf.
"Did you see other guys back home?" Stiles asked raising a brow at her.
"Okay what's up with you two? Huh? Why are you so curious about my love life? Did you talk to your murderous ex?" She looked to Scott.
"She's not murderous!" Scott exclaimed wide eyed.
"She's a little murderous." Stiles raised his hand showing his fingers almost touching as he agreed with Melody.
"She's not and nah, we agreed to give each other the summer... no texts, no calls."
" So then how do you know she won't be back at school then?" Stiles asked stopping at a red light and glancing over to his friend. When Stiles suddenly went wide eyed Melody looked over to the window seeing Allison in Lydia's car stopped right beside them.
"After everything that happened, I'm not sure she's coming back at all." Scott sighed looking to his friend.
"I think she is." Stiles said trying not to smirk. "I'd say pretty definite, you know. Like one hundred percent." He nodded to the window and Melody watched a love sucked puppy Scott look to Allison as she laughed with Lydia.
"Oh, my God. Oh..." Allison finally locked eyes with Scott making him panic and duck to hide his head.
"Can we just drive please, Stiles?" Scott exclaimed to his friend as Melody chuckled in the back and Stiles waved.
"Scott, it's a red light." He pointed at the light for emphasis.
"I think we should talk to her, I just think we should say something." Stiles shrugged at the pair.
"No. No, no, Stiles, come on. Oh, my God, dude, no."
"Stiles that's a terrible idea!" Melody exclaimed leaning in between the pair trying to grab Stiles outstretched hand as he rolled down the window but he slapped her hand away.
"Ow! Stiles!" Melody yelped as he hit her again in his mission to open the window.
"Hey!" Stiles yelled making Lydia panic and speed through the red light, literal steam coming of her tires as Stiles turned to try and console his friend. "You know, they probably didn't see us."
"They definitely saw us!" Melody exclaimed at her idiot friend that then began driving behind the girls making Scott panic even more.
"What are you doing?!"
"I'm driving." Stiles stated the obvious annoyed at his friend.
"We're right behind them." Stiles snapped making Mel snap back at him. "You going to give Scott a panic attack and I don't feel like being a late night snack to a freaking werewolf!"
"Okay, well, do you see any turns?" Stiles snapped back at her as he glance back.
"It looks like we are following them Stiles!" Melody yelled pointing ahead to Lydia's car.
"I don't want it to look like we're following them." Scott agreed.
"Well, what do you want me to do?" Stiles yelled back at the pair.
" I don't know, anything." Scott panicked making stiles slam on his breaks stopping in the middle of the road making them skid.
"Wait, guys, why did they stop too?" Melody frowned slapping Stiles on the shoulder pointing ahead just as a literal deer ran into their window shield and screaming erupted from the car.
"Holy shit!" Melody yelped following the boys as they ran out of the car to the girls.
"Are you okay?" Scott asked grabbing Allison's shoulders and Stiles ran to Lydia.
"It came out of nowhere." Lydia exclaimed looking terrified at Stiles as her hands shook.
"Are you hurt?" Stiles asked taking Lydia's head that was looking towards the dead deer in her car to look at her.
"It ran right into us." She whispered in shock.
"Are you okay?" Melody asked the red head who looked to her shaking.
"I'm okay." Allison told them and Melody forced back the urge to roll her eyes. Allison definitely wasn't on her good list after this spring.
"Well, I'm not okay. I am totally freaking out. How the hell does it just run into us? I saw its eyes right before it hit us.n It was like it... it was like it was crazy." Lydia yelped.
"No, it was scared. Actually... Terrified." Scott said walking to the front of the car feeling the dead deer's head.
"Wow, I haven't been back in Beacon Hills an hour. A freaking hour!" Melody yelled at her friends making Stiles drag his eyes over to her. "Welcome Back home." Stiles smiled lightly making her groan muttering curse words as she walked back to Stiles' Jeep.
â¸â¸â¸
"Welcome home, So how was visiting your friends?" Galen asked as Melody dumped her bags on the floor entering the house seeing him sprawled out on the couch watching a random movie. Galen had to stay late at work so Stiles had ended up picking her up from the airport and then visiting.
She sighed walking over and sitting on the couch. "I forgot how weird this town can be."
Galen furrowed his brows. "What do you mean?"
"A deer ran straight into Lydia Martens car right in front of us tonight. That's not normal right?" Melody scrunched her brows at him. The pair had called enough over the summer that she really had nothing new to tell Galen since they had literally talked the night before.
"Definitely not normal. But other than that was it good?" Galen pushed her since she had avoided the topic.
"Yea, believe it or not I kinda missed those two idiots and their antics. Scott got a tattoo right before they picked me up." Mel laughed smiling at the memories of her friends.
"Really? What of?" Galen asked setting his beer down.
"Two thick black bands around his bicep." She replied watching as her uncle frowned at her.
"Seriously?"
"Seriously. Apparently, it has meaning to him." She shrugged before turning to the tv letting silence wash over them.
"So how are you feeling about your sister?" Galen poked lightly knowing the topic was a sensitive one.
Her and her sister got into a massive fight over the summer leading to her moving to be with her aunt.
"I don't want to talk about it." She huffed crossing her arms.
"You guys are sisters." Galen sighed
"Half sisters, technically." She mumbled
"You have to talk about it." Galen told her niece.
"Look, we had a stupid fight. I wanna leave for university and she got pissed. She wants to be with her aunt so she's not alone." Melody shrugged. That wasn't exactly what the fight had been but Melody could exactly explain that she accidentally let it slip she was leaving land and wouldn't alway be around to fix Rains issues after the girl called her in the middle of drama with her new friends there.
"You guys have to talk eventually." Galen looked to her. "And I will, I just need a bit of time." Melody told him making him relax nodding.
"I'm gonna go unpack and get ready for school if that's okay?"
"What do you wanna order for dinner?" Galen asked stopping her.
"Sushi, obviously." She smiled making her uncle chuckle.
"You are going to turn into a fish if you keeping eating that much fish." Galen shook his head at her.
"Wouldn't be a bad thing would it?" She laughed walking back to her room.
Melody woke up early the next morning deciding to start off her new year right. Naia had helped the girl shop for some new clothes before she left town so she was extra excited to dress up for school.
Looking in the mirror she couldn't help but smile, she had lived up to her promise of coming back to town stronger but also came back looking different. They weren't huge changes but the salt water and sun had done wonders to her more muscular body. Her hair now sat in shiny waves down to her waist complementing her darker tanned skin.
She had picked out a black and white checkered body-con dress that brought out her tan with her platform docs. Melody also had on her mother jewelry since she learned this summer just how much her powers could do with the extra moonlight they held.
Learning about the other supernatural creatures gave her a couple new ideas on what to try with her magic over the summer. She had even figured out she could conger claws.
Grabbing her usual tote bag and her keys Melody made her way to her jeep yelling a goodbye to her uncle as she left.
â¸â¸â¸
Melody braced herself as she stood in front of Beacon Hills highschool doors. The girl had one more year left. One, and then she could leave. That thought stunned the girl as she stood starting at the teal-grey doors.
"You're blocking the doors, Melody." Stiles said annoyed announcing his and Scott's presence behind her making her groan.
"Good morning to you too Stiles." She snipped pushing opening the doors.
"You wanna ask Derek for help? Why, why?"Stiles said dragging out his question obviously against the idea.
"What are you two bickering about now?"
"Scott wants to ask Derek for help with his tattoo." Stiles asked looking over Scott's shoulder to tell her.
Ah, yes the tattoo they had gotten before picking her up last night. Apparently it hadn't even made it to the Airport before the wolf was healing making the tattoo disappear.
"Good luck with that, that man is terrible at answering his phone. Be lucky if you two can even get a text response." She snorted.
"He's got the triskele tattooed on his back. So there has to be a way to do it without healing, right?" Scott reasoned with the pair.
"Okay, yeah, but still, doesn't he have his hands a little full?" Stiles asked marking Melody frown about to ask him when someone started yelling out of the principals office.
"-And whatever happened to the library while I was gone, I want it cleared up. And what the hell is this?!" A man who must have been the old principal yelled pulling out the same sword Gerard almost used to cut Issac in half.
"Go, go, go." Stiles yelled pushing them to walk away.
"There she is! Finally you're home! Thank god. How was Crescent Cove? I'm still pissed I missed your show." Addie said appearing beside Melody dragging her away from the boys towards their new lockers.
Melody chuckled at her friend completely forgetting Stiles comment about Derek and looked to her friend.
"It was amazing, I wish you could've came to but did you see the YouTube video I sent?" She glanced to her friend while opening her locker.
Addie grinned. "I did! And please don't hate me-" that made Melody stop short looking at her raising her brows.
"I showed the band the videos and- drum roll please! They are offering you a place in the band. No audition, nothing. You'd be our new lead singer." Melody's eyes widened at her friend.
"Seriously?" She asked in shock.
"You're not mad?" Addie winced.
"No! I was planning to try out, your sure I can't audition though?" She asked making Addie shake her head
"I mean, you could but we will still pick you. Does this mean you're in?" Addie asked clasping her hands in front of her.
"Hells yes I'm in, thank you!" Melody grinned hugging her friend.
"This is going to be awesome." Addie smiled.
The pair grinned looking down the hallway where two new boys- twins-were walking down the hallway each holding a motorcycle helmet. They were both muscular short haired brown eyed brunette hotties. Melody glanced across the hall seeing Allison and Addie checking them out.
"Looks like we aren't the only ones checking out the new meat." Melody commented nodding to addies sister and Allison across the hall making her friend sigh.
"I swear my sister always takes the cute ones." Addie sighed slamming her locker.
"Maybe not this one." Melody commented watching as the boys checked them out.
One of the twins smiled pointingly to Melody making her blush.
"Oooh, looks like someone might forget about what's his name after all." Addie grinned hitting Mel's shoulder after they passed when the bell rang telling them to head to class.
The pair made their way to class, Addie finding a seat behind her twin and Melody behind Stiles when everyone's phone ding signalling a text.
" "The offing was barred by a black bank of clouds and the tranquil waterway", leading to the uttermost ends of the earth flowed somber under-" Stiles read off when a female voice cut him off as heels clicked off the linoleum floor.
" "an overcast sky, seemed to lead into the heart of an immense darkness." This is the last line to the first book we are going to read. It is also the last text you will receive in this class. Phones off, everyone." A dark haired younger woman who Melody assumed was the new history teacher announced.
"I'm your new teacher for this year, you may call me Ms. Blake." She says but stopped as another man walked in whispering to her.
"Mr.McCall, please come here." She asked leading him outside after he walked up to her making stiles look back to Melody.
"What's going on?" Stiles whispered making her sigh and listen in to Scott's conversation.
"Mr. McCall? Uh, I'm sure it's an emergency if your mother needs you to leave school, but I'm gonna give you a warning in the nicest possible way. I am well aware of your attendance record. I don't wanna see you slip back into old habits." Ms.Blake said.
" I won't. It's gonna be different this year." He assured.
" Resolutions are only good if you stick with them, Scott."Â She lectured.
"I will. I promise it won't be ephemeral." Scott replied, as Melody heard the sound of his sneakers.
"His mom called him out. Now turn your curious little head around because if I have to be here so do you." She sassed putting her hands on his shoulder to turn him around but he stopped pushing against her hands as he caught sight of Lydia's bandaged ankle.
"Hey, Lydia. What is that? Is that from the accident?" He asked pointing to her leg making her look down and Melody sighed at the boy listening to the conversation.
"No. Prada bit me." She replied.
" Your dog?" Stiles asked tucking his chin in as his face scrunched up in confusion.
"No, her designer handbag. Yes, our dog." Addie sassed him from behind her sister making Melody stifle a giggle.
"Has it ever bitten you before?" Stiles asked leaning for ward in his seat making Lydia eye him shaking her head. "Mm-mm."
Stiles getting excited with a new theory leaned towards her more. "Okay. What if it's, like, the same thing as the deer? You know, like, how animals start acting weird right before an earthquake or something?"
Melody sighed "Meaning what? There's gonna be an earthquake?" She asked making Stiles look to her.
"Or something. I just... maybe it means something's coming. Something bad." He exclaimed.
"Or your just over dramatic and have to much time to think!" Melody nagged
"I'm right, you know it." Stiles sassed her.
"No you're not." She snapped before whispering. "I'm half fish Stiles!"
"It was a deer and a dog. What's that thing you say about threes? Once, twice..." Lydia stopped as a bird flew into the window scaring the window the class.
Melody frowned thinking it was a one off and Stiles was being dramatic until another hit cracking the glass. Suddenly a swarm of crows hit the window breaking it making shards of glass rain down on the glass.
"Get down, everyone! Get down, down. Get down! Get down!" Ms.Blake screamed at everyone as Melody quickly ducked under her desk as glass started cutting her arms.
Birds kept hitting the glass as Melody curled under the desk. Dead bloody birds fell from the feeling as Stiles covered Lydia and Addie was hiding like her under the desks.
When finally the birds and glass stopped Melody slowly got out from under her desk seeing the damage around the class as the teacher called for help.
"Mel, you okay?" Stiles helped Lydia up asking and looking to his friend who was bleeding from the multiple cuts along her arms.
"Uh- yeah, well- no actually but apparently it's just another day living in Beacon Hills."
"Your arms are bleeding." Lydia pointed out to the girl.
"I'm going to add this to the list of reasons why I hate land." She sighed to Stiles as the school nurse walked in with wide eyes letting them know they were calling their parents.
"You have a list?" Stiles pulled his head back concerned making Mel roll her eyes.
Melody sighed as she walked to sit and get the nurse to wrap her arms because apparently she had gotten more of the worse cuts. That's what she gets for trying to look cute of her first day back though.
"Oh hun- sit down I'll clean these out." The nurse fretted over her as she sat looking at the damage as Stiles sat beside her looking at his phone.
"Ms. Blake? You okay?" Stiles asked moving to take a feather out of the new teachers hair making her flinch, the poor lady was obviously in shock. Melody felt bad, the woman had no idea where she moved to and this happening on her first day, yikes. "Uh, sorry, just... that." Stiles showed the teacher the feather as Chris, Allison's dad, the one Argent she didn't completely hate as of right now, came rushing in.
"Next time you're feeling you wanna stay home, you stay home." Chris said wrapping his daughter in a hug making melody look away at the sudden rush of memories of her father.
"I'm okay. But, dad, the deer and now this?" Allison pulled back in concern.
"I know, I know." Chris nodded.
"It can't be a coincidence." Allison reasoned with her dad when Stiles's dad walked up.
"Mr. Argent, you wouldn't have any insight into this, would you?"
"Me?" Chris looked confused at the man.
"Yeah. All this bizarre animal behavior, it's... you must have seen something like this before, right?" Stilinski asked
" I'm not sure why I would or why you would think I would." Chris responded slightly defensively furrowing his brows
"I'm sorry. I-I could've sworn I overheard my son talking about how you were an experienced hunter." Stilinski apologized not realizing or even knowing that Chris never hunted animals but people as he glanced to Stiles who was pretending to look away.
"Ah, right. Well, not anymore." Chris said as Stiles got up walking to her side dialling Scott's number.
"You all right?" The sheriff asked Allison who nodded.
" Yeah."
"We got a serious problem at school. Ms. Blake's class..." Stiles told Scott as the nurse finished with Melody telling her what to look for in case of infection.
"hey, can you tell me about it later?" Scott voice sounded through the phone making Melody shake her head to Stiles while getting up. This wasn't a later conversation it was a now conversation.
"Well, no, pretty sure this qualifies for immediate discussion." Stiles retorted looking to Melody clearly frustrated with his friend.
"OK then meet me at Derek's." Melody frowns, he actually got a hold of Derek, what the hell.
"Derek's house? What the hell are you doing at..." Scott cut off Stiles. " just meet us here, okay?" He sighed hanging up making both them look to each other m annoyed before walking into the hall way as Melody wined reaching in her bag for her keys.
"Whoa, what are you doing? You're not driving." Stiles said as they walked making her look to him.
"I'm driving, your driving-" she stopped seeing the boys bitch face, "-is amazing unless you're panicking."
"I'm not panicking and you're not driving after your arms just got all slashed up by a quadrillion birds." He stated leaving no room for argument as the walked out to the parking lot.
"Uh-fine." She muttered throwing her keys away. He got her there, her arms did hurt. Stupid freaky suicidal birds.
Melody spent the time on the way over to Derek's listening Stiles ranting over his theories on what was happening in town.
Thankfully the ride wasn't that long and soon enough they were pulling in front of the very burnt old Hale house. Melody forced down a shiver at the sight as she got out stopping to look up at the house.
"Why are you stopping?" Stiles looked to the girl who was standing back by the car still looking like a deer in the headlights.
"I hate this house." Melody sighed swallowing.
Stiles looked from the girl to the house and back remembering what Peter did to her and Derek.
"You don't have to-" Stiles started when Melody braced herself and started walking. "-come in." Stiles sighed following the girl.
The floor boards creaked under the pairs weight alerting the wolves to their presence.
"Melody? What happened?" Scott frowned studying the girls arms covered in bandages giving Derek a flash back to the last time they were both here.
"Well-had you let Stiles talk on the phone you would've know already." Melody sighed slightly snapping at the boy looking to Stiles nodding at him to explain.
"The birds went crazy, hundreds of them flew straight into the windows during English. Glass and the birds cut her."
"Where were you?" Derek asked looking to the boy making Melody roll her eyes.
"He was covering Lydia, I'll heal. But glad to know you're alive and that you care." Melody sassed the man making his shoulders slouch.
"Of course I care Melody, It's been a rough summer." Derek said in response and there was a moment of silence as the pair stared at each other.
"Waiting for the rough part." Melody raised her brows to the man making him chuckle at her before getting serious.
"Boyd and Erica have been missing. I've been trying to find them. Issac was helping." He nodded to the table where an unconscious Issac lay in a blanket and a hospital gown.
"What- why didn't you tell me? Is he okay?" Mel questioned completely forgetting how he had made her feel all summer.
"He will." Derek confirmed.
Melody walked over to the boy tuning out the boy's conversation looking at the pale and bloody boy. The same boy she couldn't get out of her head all summer despite Naias help finding her many boys to try and fill that void.
He looked so- peaceful- no that wasn't the right word. But his face-for once Issac's face was clear and calm it reminded her of the night she pulled him to the lake.
Melody sat down beside the table taking the boys hand flipping it over to see the scars that ran across it almost in a trance like.
"Why is this so important to you? Do you know what the word "tattoo" means?" Derek asked breaking her line of thoughts making her look over to them.
"To mark something." She answered making them all look over to her confused.
"You're not the only one who got a tattoo over summer. Mine stuck though." She flashed her wrist where her seashell tattoo now sat. Curtsy of a much too fun filled night with Naia and Rowan this summer. Her and Naia got matching ones and Rowan got a koi fish one instead.
"Cool" Stiles said surprising her since she heard how much he hated Scott's.
"Well, that's in tahitian. In samoan, it means "open wound."I knew I wanted to get a tattoo when I turned 18. I always wanted one. I just decided to get it now, to make it kind of a reward." Scott explained making them all look to him,
"For what?" Derek asked.
"For not calling or texting Allison all summer. Even when I really wanted to, even when it was so hard not to sometimes. I was trying to give her the space she wants. Goin' four months later, it still hurts. It still feels like a, uh..." Scott replied making her shake her head, of course the hunter girl was the reason for this.
"like an open wound." Stiles finished for him making the boy nod back.
"Yeah." Scott exhaled.
"The pain's gonna be worse than anything you've ever felt." Derek told Scott making Stiles rub his hand on his forehead.
"Ah, that's great." Stiles sighed
"Do it." Scott told Derek who lit the blowtorch he was holding making Melody eyes go wide.
"Oh, wow. That's a... that's a lot for me. So I'm gonna take that as my cue. I'm just gonna wait outside." Stiles moved to leave when the alpha grabbed him.
"Nope. You can help hold him down." Derek looked to him.
"Why don't you ask the mermaid!" Stiles exclaimed pointing to where Melody sat raising her brows at him.
"Stiles you wouldn't even let me drive here because my arms got all cut up which I find severely annoying. So this is all on you buddy."
"Oh, my God." Stiles exhaled looking to the celling before moving to hold his friend down as Derek stared burning his skin.
"Hold him!" Derek yelled as Scott began transforming out of the pain.
Melody groaned at the sound of her friend screaming being glad for once that she didn't have that kind of healing powers.
Melody couldn't help help but wonder what Derek and Issac had been doing all summer that got the boy this hurt, even if she was pissed he had been ignoring her and for how he made her feel but she didn't like seeing him like this.
She started to hum trying to block out the sound thinking about how close the full moon was, since she finally started singing she'd started to get back to normal practicing her full moon traditions.
"Aah! Aah! It worked." Scott exclaimed finally waking up as Derek got up to walk to Melody.
"He'll be okay, just anesthetic." Derek told her making her stop humming and look to him.
"Uh- good, I wasn't worried." She muttered at him making Derek look pointedly at her holding his hand. Melody paled placing his hand down.
"Stop. He made you feel like a fish freak. He reminded you why mermaids don't live on land. Why I'm leaving." She thought.
"You painted the door. Why'd you paint the door?" Scott asked Derek stoping at the front door were it was suddenly very obvious that the door had been repainted red.
"Go home, Scott." Derek sighed.
"And why only one side?" Scott moved the door to look at the backside making Melody frown and stand up to look. Scott flicked out his claws dragging one down to reveal fresh black paint.
" Scott." He warned walking with Mel to the front door. The wolf ignored him swiping away at the door making red paint flakes fly through the air as he revealed a symbol painted on the door.
"The birds at school and the deer last night... just like the night I got trampled by the deer when I got bit by the Alpha. How many are there?" Scott face twisted as he thought.
"A pack of 'em. An Alpha pack." He revealed
"All of them? How does that even work?" Melody questioned making Derek look to her.
"I hear there's some kind of a leader. He's called Deucalion. We know they have Boyd and Erica." Derek explained
"Peter, Isaac, and I have been looking for him for the last two months." Derek continued.
"So that's why you both of been basically ignoring me all summer?" Melody's scrunched up her face looking to Derek who nodded.
"We didn't want to involve you guys. Go back to being teenagers." Derek nodded to the door making her snap at him. "What about Issac? Huh? He's a teenager too Derek." She said pointing to the unconscious boy.
"Let's say you find them. How do you deal with an Alpha pack?" Scott interrupted there conversation.
"With all the help I can get." Derek sighed looking at them all when suddenly Issac groaned as he woke up alerting them all as he looked around.
"Where is she? Where's the girl?" Issac panicked looking to them,
"What girl?" Derek looked to his beta.
"The girl that saved me." Issac exclaimed.
"She's in the hospital." Melody replied making Issac's eyes flick to her, the world seemed to slow around the pair as they looked to each other. Two months had seemed to change them both, each had grown up. You could see it in Issac's hardened face and Melody's stance. She looked more confident in herself if that was even possible.
Mel's stomach dropped as she remembered the last time she saw him. Issac saw her face drop and knew how much he'd screwed up.
"Coming?" Stiles shouted coming back inside snapping her out of her thoughts and the pairs stare down.
"Uh- Yes. Let's go." Melody looked to Stiles, he was her ride back to her jeep after all and she didn't exactly know what to even say to the pair in front of her.
"See you around." Melody pulled her lips into a taught smile as she walked backwards as Derek told her he'd call her.
