Chapter 3: The Hidden Clues

Trapped in Another Era539 words~3 min read

As midnight approached, Aria remained inside the library, as instructed by her parents. The city outside was in disarray—a mafia attack had targeted the nearby monument, which housed priceless UK diamonds and antiques worth billions. The gang had already hijacked local trains, causing terror throughout the city. The gunshots she had heard earlier were the result of an all-out battle between the FBI and the armed criminals.

Fortunately, her mother, Cassandra Bennett, survived unscathed. She quickly took command of the situation, having long been known for her sharp instincts and brilliance in the FBI. When a key mafia member was apprehended, she organised a conference call with Aria and her father, Brian Bennett, and instructed Aria to stay inside. Aria was given VIP access to the basement, which housed sensitive documents, for added security.

Aria felt strangely safe alone in the dimly lit basement. She trusted her mother and the police, and now she had more time to read the book.

She turned to the 56th page, her heart racing as her gaze fell on the cryptic message:

"You've come this far. Just a few more steps and you'll find it.

The words were written in an unfamiliar script, but she managed to decipher them. She quickly translated the text using AI and connected it to the previously discovered footers. It was all part of a puzzle—a message intended for her alone.

A strange realisation struck her. When she returned to previous pages, she discovered that the hidden messages had disappeared. Each clue appeared only when she opened a new page and vanished as soon as she turned it. The book responded to her.

What if she was the only one who could see the messages? What if the book was waiting for her to discover something?

The unsettling thoughts persisted as the cold night progressed. The mafia threat eventually subsided, and Aria returned home to a warm dinner.

As they ate, Brian Bennett casually mentioned an unusual find from his most recent archaeological project.

"I found something strange today," he explained, setting a small, well-preserved object on the table. "It's historically irrelevant—at least that's what I thought—but I figured I'd share it with you both."

Aria's gaze fixed on the object: a ring.

It was ancient but untainted by time. She picked it up and studied the intricate engravings. When she turned it over, her breath caught in her throat.

On the inner band, a name was carved.

"Adrian Valemont."

Brian chuckled. "Never heard of any king or ruler by that name," he said with humour. "Probably just a relic from some forgotten noble."

Aria's pulse quickened. She gripped the ring tightly, her mind racing. This was impossible.

"I'm studying about him!" she exclaimed, her eyes wide with surprise. "He was one of the most mysterious rulers of his era! "It is part of my project!"

Her mother smiled and gently kissed her forehead. "That is enough history for tonight, sweetheart. Finish your meal and get some rest; it's been a long week."

However, Aria couldn't shake the feeling that this was more than a coincidence. The book, messages, and ring—

It was all connected. And she was meant to discover the truth. Regardless of what it took.
