Summer 458 AC
The acrid smell of smoke-filled Kimmel's nostrils, stinging his eyes and choking his breath. He held Raena close, her small body wracked with sobs that tore at his heart. He watched, helpless, as the flames consumed what was left of Harold, his friend, and everything Raena had ever known. Her home, her family, her dreams⦠all reduced to ash and embers. A cold fury gripped him, a rage that burned hotter than the inferno before them. He clenched his jaw, his knuckles white against the hilt of his sword. Those responsible⦠they will pay. They will pay dearly, he thought, the silent vow a promise etched in the very core of his being.
He noticed, even through the fabric of her green dress, untouched by the flames, the unnatural heat radiating from her small frame. Beneath her skin, he could almost see the flicker of flames, a pulse of raw power that beat in time with her ragged breaths, a terrifying echo of the inferno that burned before them.
"Rae, honey, your magic..." Kimmel began, his voice thick with concern, trailing off as he struggled to find the right words. Raena, her green dress stark against the backdrop of the inferno before them, looked down at her arms, her small shoulders still shaking with sobs. The faint, flickering glow beneath her skin pulsed with an erratic rhythm, a dangerous, uncontrolled energy.
"I-I can't c-control it," she sobbed, her voice barely a whisper above the crackling flames. Tears streamed down her face, leaving clean streaks through the soot that smudged her cheeks.
"Breathe, honey," Kimmel coached gently, his voice a low, soothing murmur against the backdrop of the crackling flames. "You've got to try to control it. Focus on your breath, in and out."
Raena tried, her small chest heaving with ragged breaths, but to no avail. The flickering flames beneath her skin intensified, growing hotter and more visible, a dangerous, pulsing glow that threatened to erupt. The air around her shimmered with the rising heat, a visible distortion that mirrored the turmoil within her.
"I-it's not working!" Raena cried, her voice rising in panic. The flickering flames beneath her skin surged, erupting into a visible heat that ignited the air around her. Kimmel instinctively stepped back, the sudden wave of intense heat washing over him. He felt the hair on his arms singe, and the leather of his gauntlets grew uncomfortably warm. Despite the rising danger, he maintained a calm exterior, his voice steady. He knew that if he panicked, he would only exacerbate Raena's fear, and the situation would spiral out of control. He had to guide her through this, to be the anchor she desperately needed.
"Breathe with me, Rae," Kimmel instructed, his voice low and steady, a beacon of calm amidst the chaos. "In... one, two, three, four, five. Hold it... two, three. Exhale... two, three, four, five." He demonstrated the breathing pattern, his own breaths deep and measured, hoping to guide her through the rising panic. He kept his gaze locked on hers, his expression unwavering, a silent promise that he wouldn't let her face this alone.
"I-I can't do it," Raena sobbed, her tears drying on her soot-streaked face as quickly as they fell, her breath hitching in ragged gasps.
"Yes. You. Can," Kimmel stated firmly, his voice leaving no room for argument. "Focus on your breathing, Rae. Just like I told you. In, hold, out. You're stronger than this. You're stronger than the fire." He kept his voice low and steady, trying to cut through the rising panic. He knew that she had the power within her, he just needed to help her find it.
Slowly, Raena's breathing began to synchronize with his, her ragged gasps evening out into a more controlled rhythm. Kimmel maintained unwavering eye contact, his gaze a steady anchor in the swirling chaos. "That's it, Rae," he murmured, his voice a low, reassuring rumble. "Focus on your magic now. Let it flow, but direct its flow somewhere safe. Imagine it moving, like water, like a river. Guide it away from you, away from the air.â
Raena, her eyes still brimming with tears, finally broke eye contact with Kimmel and turned her gaze towards the inferno raging behind her. She took a shuddering breath, her small chest rising and falling, and focused on the turbulent energy within her. With a cry, she unleashed her magic, a torrent of raw power that whooshed from her like a raging tempest. The flames, no longer contained beneath her skin, erupted outwards, a geyser of fire that shot skyward, past the ancient treetops, illuminating the smoke-filled sky with an eerie, orange glow. Then, as suddenly as it had erupted, the fire collapsed inwards, a violent implosion that sucked the air from around them. The force of the magical release, coupled with the emotional strain, proved too much for Raena. She slumped, her small body going limp, and fell against Kimmel, her weight heavy in his arms.
Barely able to keep her eyes open, her gaze fluttering and unfocused, Raena whispered, "I'm sorry," her voice a hoarse, broken thread. Then, her eyelids fluttered shut, and she slipped into unconsciousness, her weight heavy and unmoving against Kimmel.

The next day dawned bright and sunny, a clear, vibrant blue stretching across the sky, unmarred by even the wisp of a cloud. The morning air, crisp and cool, carried the scent of pine and damp earth, a refreshing contrast to the lingering warmth of the guild hall. Raena stirred in her sleep, her eyelids fluttering open as the first rays of sunlight filtered through the window, painting the room in a soft, golden light.
She rose early, just as the sun was peeking over the horizon, its gentle warmth coaxing her from her slumber. A deep, satisfying stretch rippled through her tired muscles, easing the lingering tension from her journey. She sat on the edge of the bed, her gaze drifting towards the window, and allowed the events of the previous day to wash over her. The stories, the laughter, the unexpected camaraderie⦠it all felt strangely surreal, like a dream from which she was slowly awakening. The warmth of the fire, the easy conversation, and the shared tales lingered in her mind, a stark contrast to the harsh realities of her past. She wondered if this feeling of belonging was real, or just a fleeting illusion, a temporary respite from the loneliness that had become her constant companion.
Quickly, she dressed, the simple, practical clothing of an adventurer feeling familiar and comforting against her skin. The lingering weariness of travel still clung to her, but the promise of a new day, and the lingering warmth of the previous evening's camaraderie, spurred her onward. She splashed cold water on her face from the washbasin, the shock of the chill momentarily clearing the lingering fog of sleep from her mind. A quick glance in the small, tarnished mirror revealed tired eyes, but also a flicker of something new, something akin to hope. She wondered what the day would bring, what new challenges and opportunities awaited her.

She exited her room into the quiet of the hallway. The usual bustle that filled the guild hall's common area was yet to begin. A hushed stillness hung in the air, broken only by the soft creak of the floorboards beneath her feet. It was that liminal time between night and day, when only the early risers and those who had yet to succumb to sleep stirred. A single lantern flickered at the far end of the corridor, casting long, dancing shadows that stretched and distorted the familiar shapes of the hallway. The quiet was a stark contrast to the lively energy of the previous evening, a moment of peaceful solitude before the day's demands began.
Slowly, she descended the stairs, her footsteps barely making a creak against the worn wooden steps. The quiet of the hallway gave way to a gentle murmur as she reached the bottom floor. The common room, though still subdued, was beginning to stir. The soft clinking of cutlery against plates and the low hum of early morning conversations filled the air. A few patrons were scattered about, enjoying a quiet breakfast or a solitary cup of tea before the day's activities began.
Raena reached the hall and headed for the serving line, her stomach rumbling in anticipation. The short line moved quickly, and soon she stood before the array of morning fare, a wooden plate in her hands. She surveyed the offerings: fluffy scrambled eggs, crispy strips of bacon, thick slices of smoked ham, steaming bowls of oatmeal, and a rich, savory-smelling biscuits and gravy. A platter of special omelets caught her eye, filled with what appeared to be melted cheese and a colorful medley of vegetables.
"I'll take two of the omelets, please," she requested, holding her platter out towards the server. The server, a young woman with warm, brown eyes and slightly tousled hair, smiled back. With practiced ease, she expertly placed two of the cheese and vegetable omelets onto Raena's platter, the golden-brown edges sizzling slightly.
Armed with her breakfast-laden platter, Raena made her way into the hall, scanning the room for an open seat. Her gaze swept across the scattered patrons, and then landed on Gema. Gema, seated alone at a small table near a window, had clearly spotted her. A warm smile spread across Gema's face, and she stood, waving Raena over with a friendly gesture.
Making her way over to Gema's table, Raena placed her plate down gently before settling into the empty chair opposite her. The aroma of the omelets, mingled with the general scent of morning cooking, filled the small space between them.
Raena looked around for Dean, wondering where he was. Gema noticed her looking and offered, âHe's still sleeping last night off.â
Raena nodded her head in understanding, lifting her fork and getting ready to dig into her breakfast. The first bite of the vegetable omelet was savory, the melted cheese and herbs creating a rich, flavorful combination that warmed her from the inside out.
"We need to talk about your adventuring. For now, I think it's best you concentrate on getting control of your magic," Gema began, her voice gentle but firm.
Raena lifted her head, an eyebrow raised in mild protest. "I have to take some jobs, Gema. I can't live on no income, and I can't expect the men from Stepping Wolf to pay for everything. I appreciate their hospitality, but I'm not a charity case.â
"I understand your concern, Raena," Gema continued, her voice laced with earnestness, "but getting control over your magic is extremely important. You don't want to hurt yourself, or others. Think about what happened when you were a child. We need to make sure that never happens again.â
Raena flinched, her fork clattering softly against the plate, at Gema's mention of her childhood trauma. A pang of raw pain shot through her chest, a familiar ache that never truly faded. The memory of the flames, the fear, the loss... it was a wound that time had not healed. She lowered her gaze, her breakfast suddenly losing its appeal.
Suddenly, a faint, flickering glow pulsed beneath Raena's skin, a telltale sign of her magic surging dangerously close to the surface. The flames danced to the frantic beat of her heart, a visible manifestation of the emotional turmoil raging within her. Gema, her eyes widening in alarm, reached out and gently laid a hand on Raena's arm, her touch surprisingly steady.
"I'm sorry," she said, her voice soft and apologetic. "That was callous of me. I didn't mean to⦠but it's the truth, Raena. Just look at how close you are to losing control. Remember the breathing exercise I taught you last night?â
Raena nodded, her gaze meeting Gema's golden eyes, a silent acknowledgment of the struggle within her. "Good," Gema said, her voice firm but gentle. "Now use it. Breathe."
Raena closed her eyes, focusing inward, pushing aside the lingering pain and fear. She concentrated on her breathing, the rhythmic inhale and exhale a lifeline in the turbulent sea of her emotions. She inhaled slowly through her mouth for a count of six, held it for a count of three, then exhaled for a count of six. The repeated cycle, the measured rhythm, began to calm the storm within her. She repeated the breathing exercise, her breaths growing deeper and more controlled, until the flickering flames beneath her skin subsided, and she felt a sense of grounding, a return to the present.
"That's it," Gema encouraged, her voice low and soothing. "Keep going, just a little more. You're doing great." She watched Raena's face, the tension slowly draining away, replaced by a sense of calm. "Now, feel your magic steady. Feel it settle, like embers cooling in the hearth. Feel it become a part of you, controlled, contained.â
Raena followed Gema's instructions, focusing on the subtle ebb and flow of her magic. She imagined it as a candle flame, burning steadily and controlled, no longer a wild blaze threatening to consume everything around it. A sense of calm washed over her, a feeling of centeredness that was both unfamiliar and deeply comforting. It was as if a missing piece of a puzzle had finally locked into place within her, creating a sense of wholeness she hadn't realized she lacked. Opening her eyes, she felt calmer, more grounded, and more in control than she had ever felt before. The world around her seemed sharper, clearer, as if a veil had been lifted.
"See how right it feels when you're in control of your magic?" Gema asked, her smile reaching her golden eyes, radiating warmth and genuine encouragement.
"Will it last?" Raena asked, her voice tinged with a hint of uncertainty. Gema shook her head gently.
"The more you practice and use your magic, the more control you will gain," Gema reassured her. "It's barely controlled right now, but you are definitely on the right track. We will practice with your magic after we finish breaking our fast. I have a few exercises in mind that will help you solidify this newfound control.â
Raena toyed with her fork, pushing a piece of vegetable around her plate, her brow furrowed slightly. "How long will it take?" she asked plaintively, the underlying anxiety in her voice clear.
"That all depends on you," Gema explained, her voice patient and understanding. "It could take a few months, it could take a few years. It depends on how quickly you learn, how diligently you practice, and how deeply you connect with your magic. There's no set timeline, Raena. It's a journey, not a race.â
"Years? I can't afford to not work for years," Raena exclaimed, her voice laced with panic, the flickering flames resurfacing beneath her skin. She quickly focused on her breathing, the familiar rhythm grounding her once more.
"Maybe we can compromise," Gema suggested, her voice calm and reasonable. "You spend most of your time studying with me, focusing on gaining control. And then, you can take a job here and there, as we have time. We can reevaluate later, if we need to. How does that sound?â
Sighing, Raena gave a hesitant nod, her gaze lingering on Gema's earnest expression. She took a bite of her omelet, the savory flavors a stark contrast to the knot of anxiety still lingering in her stomach. It was a compromise, a fragile balance between necessity and safety.
A silence settled between them as they focused on their meals. The soft clinking of cutlery against plates filled the brief pause in conversation. Gema savored the rich, savory flavors of her biscuits and gravy, while Raena slowly ate her omelets, the cheese and vegetables a comforting, grounding taste. The tension from their previous discussion lingered, but the shared act of eating created a sense of normalcy, a moment of respite before the day's challenges began.
After they finished their meals and returned their dishes to the serving area, Gema turned to Raena, her expression thoughtful. "The Adventurer's Guild in Haven has a training yard. Does the guild here in Eagle Point have the same?"
Raena nodded, confirming Gema's suspicion. "Yes, in the back, near the stable yard.â
"Good," Gema said, a spark of determination in her golden eyes. "We'll go there to start your training." She gestured towards the hall, motioning for Raena to lead the way.
