Chapter 10: Thatâs Not a God, Thatâs a Bootloader
The air went sharp just before it arrived.
Ethan was mid-bite into a fried fungus skewer (surprisingly crunchy, mildly electric) when the sky above the Dream Coil blinked. Not a cloud. Not a thunderclap. Just an absence â like the system lagged and forgot to render the sun.
Milo dropped his teacup.
Whisp twitched awake from Ethanâs shoulder pocket and muttered, âSomething old just logged in.â
And then it came down.
Not from the heavens â that wouldâve been poetic. It just appeared, hovering three feet off the ground at the center of the Coilâs terrace. No warning. No ripple. Just a figure in brilliant white and prismatic gold, humanoid but hazy, draped in shifting code-silk and whispering glyphs.
Its face was smooth. Featureless. Just a faint grid across glassy skin, like a mask that never finished loading.
> âNODE BETA-9,â it said, voice echoing in binary and thunder. âYOU HAVE ENGAGED UNSANCTIONED DIVINE INTEGRATION. STAND BY FOR DISMANTLEMENT.â
Ethan blinked. âOh, come on. I just got this godpiece out of the box.â
----------------------------------------
The cultists around the Coil dropped to their knees. Pallix started chanting in a language that sounded suspiciously like corrupted XML. Milo, meanwhile, hid behind a stack of sacrificial scrolls and whispered, âThatâs a spiritual enforcer. They only appear when a sanctumâs been breached.â
âGreat,â Ethan muttered. âItâs a godly repo man.â
> âYOU WILL BE UNMADE,â the emissary continued.
Ethan stood, brushing dust off his coat. âQuestion. Before the unmaking: can I get a receipt? Maybe some documentation?â
> âUNNECESSARY. YOU HAVE VIOLATED PROTOCOL SEVEN. HOSTING AN UNREGISTERED DIVINE FRAGMENT IS A CLASS-DELTA VIOLATION.â

âAlright,â Ethan said. âBut counterpointâhave you tried turning yourself off and back on again?â
The emissary surged forward.
----------------------------------------
It didnât walk. It glided, like a ghost wrapped in bandwidth. And when it reached Ethan, it raised a hand wrapped in runes that burned across every spectrum.
Ethan grinned, stepped backwardâand flicked a rune stone at its forehead.
The stone shattered. The emissary didnât even flinch.
But the Frame did.
> [Unexpected Interaction Detected] [Divine Construct: Obsolete Protocol â Godshell Bootstrap v1.2] [ERROR: Reboot Required]
>
> > Patch Available: Ethan_Rourke_CustomFix_v0.1_alpha
â...Whisp,â Ethan said slowly. âTell me I can install that.â
âYou can,â Whisp replied from his collar. âBut if it works, itâll be by accident.â
Ethan grinned wider. âMy favorite kind of success.â
----------------------------------------
The emissaryâs hand came downâtoo fast to dodge.
Ethan caught it.
And his palm ignited with glitch-light.
For a moment, it was like wrestling a firewall. Heat seared up his arm. His bones trembled under raw spiritual authority. The god-fragment inside him howled in quiet defianceâand reached back.
> [Patch Applied.] [Bootloader Sequence Interrupting...]
>
> > Welcome, Dev-Key Override. System Status: Confused. Authority Chain: Disrupted.
The emissary jerked violently. Its runes blinked out, then rebooted in red. Not standard divine redâdeveloper warning red.
Ethan leaned in. âHi. Iâm your god now.â
----------------------------------------
The explosion wasnât physical.
It was conceptual.
Reality around the Dream Coil shivered like glass under stress. Several cultists passed out. One spontaneously converted to a different religion. Milo yelled something about âimpossible protocol inheritanceâ and ducked.
When the smoke cleared, the emissary was on its knees. Not in submission â just disoriented. Cracked. Fragmented.
It looked up at Ethan with its blank, featureless face.
And whispered: âWhat... are you?â
Ethan crouched, locking eyes with the glowing grid behind its mask.
âIâm a bad idea that figured out how to type.â

----------------------------------------
Afterward, Ethan stood atop the broken platform, hands in his pockets, watching the emissary slowly fadeâdismissed, rewritten, or simply confused out of existence.
Milo approached, still shaken. âYou patched a divine construct with a debug script.â
âYup.â
âYou hijacked a bootloader meant to deify a host.â
âTechnically, I interrupted it.â
âYou taunted a spiritual enforcer into crashing itself.â
Ethan stretched and cracked his neck. âNot my first patch party.â
Whisp muttered, âYou are spiritually illegal in twelve sectors.â
âIâm shooting for fifty by lunch.â
