Chapter 13: The Library, The Lab, and The Very Loud Ghost

The Archive Wing C had a sign over the door that read: “Restricted Access. For Quiet Research and Minor Hauntings Only.”

Ethan thought that was a promising start.

----------------------------------------

Technically, he was there for extra credit. Technically, he was being “offered a chance to demonstrate initiative and reintegrate with structured learning,” according to the notice slipped under his dorm door. And technically, the form included a waiver for spectral injury.

Naturally, he picked the most haunted assignment available.

It involved entering a wing of the academy’s archives that had been closed off ever since a research accident caused the building to develop emotional instability.

> “The shelves hiss at people,” Milo muttered as they reached the sealed entrance. “One student claims their thesis paper tried to bite them.”

Ethan nodded thoughtfully. “Sounds like a place with opinions. I like it.”

----------------------------------------

The rune-lock on the door accepted Ethan’s forged permissions with a passive-aggressive sigh, and the heavy double doors creaked open.

Inside: pure library mood.

Dust motes danced in stale sunbeams. Bookcases stretched into dimness, many leaning like tired old men. Scroll tubes clicked softly to themselves. Somewhere, a tome thudded shut with the force of a guilty conscience.

And above it all, a constant low hum — not sound, but signal. Ethan’s Frame buzzed faintly at the edges, like a phone trying to catch a forbidden network.

Whisp peeked out of Ethan’s collar, ears twitching. “That’s not ambiance. That’s code bleed.”

Milo shivered. “I hate this already.”

“Relax,” Ethan said. “It’s just data with a grudge.”

----------------------------------------

They followed the hum to the central aisle.

The narrative has been taken without permission. Report any sightings.

It led them to a reading desk overgrown with discarded crystal slates and note stacks. And behind it, hovering slightly above the floor, was the ghost.

Except it wasn’t a person.

It was a cluster of broken sigils and flickering projections. Glimpses of robes. A face that kept rotating through different configurations — all of them wrong. Its presence tugged at the Frame like a bootloader trying to restart a personality.

It wasn’t malevolent.

It was just loud.

> “RESEARCH ERROR,” the ghost cried, rotating midair. “PAPER NOT SAVED. THESIS INCOMPLETE. DESTINY PATH INTERRUPTED.”

“Wow,” Ethan whispered. “Even the dead fear academic deadlines.”

----------------------------------------

The ghost spotted them. Or rather, it spotted Milo.

> “ASSISTANT LOCATED. INITIATE SUPPORT PROTOCOL. TRANSFER SOUL CREDITS.”

Milo froze.

Ethan stepped forward. “Hey! Over here, haunted Clippy. He’s not the assistant. I’m the one with the sparkle soul and bad decisions.”

> “YOU HAVE TOO MANY PERMISSIONS,” the ghost shrieked, jittering sideways. “ILLEGAL NODE ACCESS. CONFLICT DETECTED.”

Whisp groaned. “You’re gonna debug it, aren’t you?”

“Oh, absolutely.”

----------------------------------------

Ethan reached out.

The moment his hand touched the edge of the ghost’s code, the room shuddered.

A dozen scrolls unrolled themselves. Shelves groaned. The ghost shrieked like a broken dial-up modem and collapsed inward, pulling Ethan’s Frame connection into a localized loop.

Lines of code blasted across his vision:

> [Corrupted Spirit Echo Detected] [Former Researcher: Name Fragmented – “Dean Lys–”] [Last Record: Failed Ascension Trial – Data Spill Imminent]

>

> Initiate Containment?

Ethan clicked YES with a grin.

----------------------------------------

The energy surged.

The ghost let out a final blast of sound and folded like a dying process.

The light dimmed.

Then a pop-up bloomed across Ethan’s HUD:

> [You have successfully contained a Rogue Echo]

>

> > Item Gained: Spirit Archive Fragment (Dean-Class) New Passive: “Loud Ghost in the Machine” Effect: Once per day, ghost yells academic advice during crisis moments. Cannot be silenced.

Milo gaped. “You harvested it?!”

“It was floating around unsubmitted research,” Ethan said. “I’m doing it a favor.”

----------------------------------------

They walked out of the archive an hour later, Ethan cheerful, Milo traumatized, and Whisp smugly carrying a purloined book titled “How to Bribe a Deity (and Other Courteous Lies).”

As they passed another student in the hall, she looked at Milo and asked, “Is your master always like this?”

Milo didn’t even blink.

“Yes. He’s incredibly advanced.”

Ethan gave him a slow, sarcastic salute.

----------------------------------------

> [SYSTEM SNAPSHOT – NODE BETA-9] Achievement Unlocked: Ghost Protocol Passive: Loud Ghost in the Machine

>

> > Grants occasional bursts of completely useless advice in a crisis.

>

> Reputation – Archive Staff: “Too curious. Slightly cursed.” Student Rumor Tracker:

>

> > “Has a ghost butler.” “Controls his assistant with forbidden charms.” “Could be the secret headmaster.”
