Chapter 15: The Duel That Shouldn’t Have Happened aka Milo's Mildly Heroic Panic Spiral™

----------------------------------------

The dueling arena behind Halcyon Fold was a pristine circle of white stone, lined with glowing runes and a magical scoreboard that looked suspiciously judgmental.

It was sunset, and the whole student body had apparently shown up. Nothing drew a crowd like potential violence and social collapse.

Ethan sat comfortably on a raised bench with a packet of fried lotus chips and a cup labeled “Definitely Not Tea (Don’t Scan Me).” Whisp was curled around the rim like a judgmental marshmallow.

Milo stood in the center of the ring, gripping a sword that audibly sighed.

----------------------------------------

Across from him stood Tarnic Wyrnhollow — perfectly pressed robes, smug aura, and a dueling stance that screamed ‘I once paid someone to choreograph this.’

“Initiate when ready,” said Instructor Seraine, arms crossed. She didn’t even pretend to be interested.

The crowd leaned in.

Milo whispered to himself: “Okay. Just survive. That’s all. Survive and don’t scream.”

> The sword hummed. “Too late for dignity. Let’s go, disaster boy.”

----------------------------------------

Round One: Surprise Dodge

Tarnic lunged.

Milo panicked.

And fell over.

Tarnic’s blade whiffed through empty air, and Milo’s sword instinctively parried mid-fall, redirecting the noble’s wrist into a flawless overextension.

Milo hit the ground with a grunt. Tarnic hit the ground three seconds later with a thud.

The crowd gasped.

Ethan stood up and clapped once. “AND that’s why you never underestimate anxiety-fueled reflexes!”

----------------------------------------

Round Two: Improvise or Die

Tarnic came back angry.

He muttered something under his breath — a quick essence boost — and his sword ignited with a pale violet flame.

“Hey!” Ethan shouted from the stands. “No enhancements! That’s against the—”

Instructor Seraine didn’t even look up. “Mild cheating allowed. Builds character.”

Ethan blinked. “That is a terrifying teaching philosophy.”

----------------------------------------

Milo braced, and his sword whispered: “Channel your terror. Weaponize your fear.”

“I don’t know how to do that!”

“Then panic harder!”

Tarnic charged. Milo sidestepped — barely — and instinctively slapped the hilt of his blade against his opponent’s knee. A small spark triggered one of the hidden runes Ethan had slapped on the weapon before the match.

Tarnic ate stone.

Round Three: The Panic Finale

Now furious, Tarnic got up and fully broke the rules — pouring essence into a forbidden glyph and casting a short-range binding hex.

It would’ve worked.

If Ethan hadn’t quietly handed Milo a charm before the match.

“Use this if he cheats,” Ethan had whispered. “It’s... experimental.”

Now Milo activated it on instinct.

The air rippled.

The hex rebounded.

Tarnic’s own spell turned inside out and tangled his arms in spectral ropes — mid-lunge.

----------------------------------------

There was a moment of silence.

Tarnic toppled.

Milo blinked.

The sword muttered, “Victory by divine clumsiness. I’m retiring.”

The scoreboard dinged.

> VICTORY: MILO (ASSISTANT CLASS, UNRANKED)

The crowd erupted — half in cheers, half in outrage, and one noble fainted dramatically.

Instructor Seraine walked past Ethan and deadpanned, “He’s now banned from standard combat class.”

Ethan sipped his tea. “Worth it.”

----------------------------------------

That night, back in their dorm, Milo sat very still.

“I think I blacked out for most of that,” he said.

“You won,” Ethan said, tossing him a medal made out of enchanted candy.

“I cheated.”

“You adapted.”

Whisp added, “You made that noble cry. I’m proud of you.”

Milo stared at them both. “...Am I the villain now?”

“No,” Ethan said. “I’m the villain. You’re just adjacent.”
