Chapter 7: Echo Key, Meet Boot Knife

Chapter 7: Echo Key, Meet Boot Knife

The one where reverence gets weird and reality bleeds a little sideways.

The Dream Coil didn't hum with divinity.

It buzzed.

Like an overclocked server farm built by monks who forgot whether they were praying or programming.

The interior halls were a tangled mess of smooth stone and knotted wires, of sacred carvings half-covered by coolant vents and glowing prayer circuits that clicked like insect wings. Lanterns pulsed in soft, unnatural hues, casting the passageways in looping patterns that danced across Ethan’s vision if he stared too long.

And Ethan? Ethan was just trying to figure out whether the rice cracker in his mouth was blessed, expired, or both.

It crumbled like chalk. Tasted like cardboard rubbed on a temple floor.

He swallowed it anyway.

Because politeness.

----------------------------------------

The “cult”—and Ethan was increasingly sure it was a cult, no matter how nicely they dressed it up—had taken to calling him The Echo Key.

The name sounded important. Monumental, even. But it was clear no one actually knew what it meant. Not the masked priestess who kept trying to ask him vague, leading questions about destiny. Not the acolytes who offered him relics wrapped in old server tape. Not even Milo, who kept glancing at Ethan like he was waiting for him to explode.

Ethan couldn’t blame him.

Even he didn’t even know what the Frame was doing anymore. The interface had gone quiet after the Trial. Too quiet. Like it was holding its breath and waiting to see what kind of chaos he would pull next.

He walked slowly through the Coil’s central chamber—a vast, multi-tiered atrium lit by rings of suspended glass and low whirring field coils. The floor was made of overlapping spirit circuits, worn by time and use. Every few steps, a hidden rune would blink to life under his feet, reacting to the strange energy in his blood.

His footsteps made the ground remember something. Not a memory. More like... an echo of one.

> “This place has been dormant for centuries,” Milo whispered beside him. “It was built during the Partition War. They say it used to decode dreams.”

“Cool,” Ethan muttered, brushing a strand of wire out of his path. “Because I’m definitely living one.”

He wasn’t sure if he meant it as sarcasm.

----------------------------------------

Eventually, they brought him to what passed for the inner sanctum—a wide circular platform surrounded by ancient screens and crumbling pillars that bled rust and incense smoke. The priestess with the cracked porcelain mask approached him slowly, reverently, like she was walking toward a star.

Stolen story; please report.

“This is the central interface,” she said, her voice soft. “If you are truly the Key… the node will respond.”

Ethan eyed the relic in question.

It looked like someone had mashed together an Ouija board, a touchscreen tablet, and a sacred relic, then dunked the whole thing in holy oil and forgotten passwords.

He sighed, rolled his shoulders, and pressed his palm against it.

It sang.

Not in sound. In light. A low, pulsing rhythm that throbbed beneath his skin like a second heartbeat.

> [ACCESS REQUEST RECEIVED – ECHO KEY CONFIRMED] [SYNCING LEGACY INTERFACE: 2%... 14%... 47%] [WARNING: REALITY ANCHOR SHIFTING] [PLEASE REMAIN CALM]

Ethan didn’t move.

Couldn’t, really.

The entire sanctum tilted slightly, as if the space itself had to make room for him. For whatever he had just reawakened. Whispers—thin and breathless—brushed the edges of his hearing. Not voices. Just possibilities.

A ripple passed through the Frame.

> [New Tag Acquired: ECHO KEY]

> > Passive Effect: Frame Affinity Radius Increased You are now very interesting to very dangerous people.

“Fantastic,” Ethan muttered. “Just what I always wanted.”

----------------------------------------

He should have expected the attack.

A place like this—half sacred codebase, half bunker of broken faith—was bound to attract attention. And not all of it the friendly kind.

He was alone on the outer terrace, watching the sky turn a shade too close to memory, when it happened.

No warning. No footsteps.

Just the wind shifting wrong.

And then pain.

A flash of silver. A razor edge whispering past his ribs.

He twisted, dropped, and rolled instinctively. Came up short. Faced a figure in a tattered cloak, face hidden beneath a scuffed envoy mask, blade already arcing in again.

The knife was small. Personal. Meant for close, silent work.

“I don’t suppose you’re here to return a library book,” Ethan said, backing away one slow step at a time.

“You’re not the Key,” the assassin hissed. “You’re an echo. A fake.”

“Oh good,” Ethan exhaled. “Another one of those.”

----------------------------------------

The fight was messy.

He dodged by instinct more than skill, drawing on raw, twitchy frame energy. His hand flickered—briefly intangible—as he activated Sidestep Rewrite and slid just past a fatal stab. He crashed into a nearby incense brazier, scattering smoke and red-hot coals.

The attacker moved like someone trained in silence. Every footfall smooth. Every motion efficient. But Ethan? Ethan moved like someone who refused to die out of spite.

He grabbed a ceremonial fan from the altar and flung it like a frisbee. It hit the assassin’s mask and shattered into holy confetti.

They stumbled.

That was all he needed.

A shove.

A twist.

A snapped boot against the edge of the terrace.

And gravity did the rest.

The figure screamed something halfway between a curse and a prayer as they fell out of sight.

----------------------------------------

Back inside, Milo found him nursing a shallow cut on his arm with a damp relic cloth.

“You were attacked.”

“Yep.”

“They tried to kill you.”

“Again, yep.”

“And you threw a breadstick at them?”

“It was sacred,” Ethan said, smiling faintly. “Apparently.”

----------------------------------------

As night fell, Ethan climbed to the top of the Coil and watched distant airships glide like floating embers through the haze. The city below glittered with lights—some candles, some pulse-reactors, some things he couldn’t identify at all.

He pulled Whisp from his hood and set the little mouse on the railing beside him.

"Tell me again why I didn’t just reincarnate into a nice, peaceful farmer’s life?"

Whisp yawned. “Because your soul’s made of chaos and dumb luck.”

“Fair.”

They sat in silence as the Frame hummed softly under the world.
