Christopher was offended by Kathleenâs distrust of him.
However, he knew that he could not force her to trust him as well.
It was his incapability that prevented her from believing him wholeheartedly.
However, she had an indescribable trust toward Samuel, be it good or bad.
Her understanding of Samuel was deeply engraved in her.
âRest well. Iâm going to make a move first.â Christopher got up to leave.
Kathleen sighed.
Samuel stared at her with his dark eyes as he asked. âShould I be happy?â
Kathleen stared back at him. âHappy about what?â
âHappy that you trust me more than Christopher.â Samuel raised a brow.
Kathleen snorted coldly, âWhatâs there to be happy about? Do you think itâs something that you should be proud of?â
Samuelâs brows furrowed.
âYou think that I treat you differently compared to others but you donât know that these were my sufferings back then.â Kathleenâs voice was soft and hoarse. âBecause I know you too well, thatâs why I can read all your minor expressions. Iâve learned how to observe your expressions, afraid that youâll dislike me if I donât. Iâve been trying to play my role as that perfect wife but we still ended up with divorce.â
Samuelâs face darkened.
âI was constantly wondering. Must it always be like this?â Kathleen was frowning. âMust I understand you so well and please you so much? There was a voice in my head back then, telling me that youâll fall in love with me if I try harder. Maye if I just wait for a bit longer, then youâll notice how good I am. But all my hard work was wasted once Nicolette was back.â
Samuelâs voice was slightly hoarse. âIâ¦â
âIâm not reprimanding you by saying it all out, Samuel.â Kathleen took a deep breath. âItâs just that I realized that you wonât care about that person no matter how much she loves you because you donât love her. Likewise, itâs because you donât love me, thatâs why you tend to ignore whatever I do.
Isnât that right?â
Samuel was silent.
âHow much do you know about me, Samuel?â Kathleen was biting her red lips. âAside from those shallow stuff, how much do you know about my inner thoughts?â
âIâ¦. I donât know.â Samuel spoke hoarsely. âIâm sorry.â
âYou really donât know.â Kathleenâs voice was deep. âBut it means that you still have some self-
awareness, judging by the fact youâre admitting this. Hereâs what, Samuel. I rejected Christopher not because he wasnât as good as you but because I just wanted to simplify things. I didnât return for the Morris family, the Corbyn family, or whatever. I just wanted to quickly settle all these unimportant things. Do you understand?â
Samuel stared at her with his deep eyes. âIs it perhaps that Iâm one of those unimportant things too?â
âYes.â Kathleen could not help but nod. âYou sure are. I initially thought that weâll just become strangers when we meet again. But little did I expect you to cling to me.â
She could not understand that.
âSo Iâve never been a part of your plan?â Samuel asked.
She nodded slowly.
Heh!
Samuel smiled coldly. âThe truth always hurts more than lies.â
Kathleen pursed her lips.
Samuel raised his hands and placed his thumb on her red lips. He gently caressed them. âBut what should I do? I think Iâm feeling down but I canât bring myself to leave.â
Kathleen was frowning.
âBack then, I wasnât afraid because I took your love for granted. I knew that youâd always be waiting for me no matter how many times I left.â Samuelâs voice was low. âNow, Iâm not afraid to leave too because you donât love me, but I love you.â
Kathleen stared at the cold man before her. She could not believe that those words came out from him.
Samuel was overflowing with ferocity. The air surrounding them turned cold.
Kathleen shivered a bit.
However, that ferocity in him vanished in a blink of an eye.
âLetâs not talk about this.â Samuel put down his hand. âWeâve agreed on being a family. I should learn how to adapt to this.â
Kathleen pursed her lips.
A smile flashed across his cold yet charming face. âBut I must say, you made the right choice. Itâs the simplest way by giving the land deed to me. It simplifies everything.â
Kathleen said, âBut thatâs if you can manage it.â
âHow hard do you think it can be?â Samuel raised a brow.
Kathleen frowned. âIsnât it hard? What if Felix and Clement join hands?â
âThey will have no gains from doing so. Why would they?â Samuel asked coldly.
Kathleen paused.
Thatâs true.
If Clement knew that the Morris family could not do anything once the land deed was given to Samuel, he would not collaborate with them anymore.
Christopher returned home.
Emily approached him. âHowâs Kate?â
âSheâs all right,â Christopher answered.
âGrandpaâs here. Heâs waiting for you in the living room,â Emily said.
Christopher frowned. He was not feeling good inside as he was displeased with Felix.
Upon reaching the living room, he saw Felix sipping coffee. He greeted, âGrandpa.â
Felix eyed Christopher from the side. âWas Samuel there when Kathleen called me?â
Christopher nodded. âYeah.â
âHmph! I knew it! You saw everything, right, Christopher? Sheâs so disrespectful toward me but yet you want to marry her?â
Christopher frowned. âWasnât it because you insulted her first, Grandpa? Whatâs with a second marriage? Is it illegal?â
Felix slammed on the table. âHow dare you talk to me like that? That womanâs a bad influence on you!â
Bad influence?
âDonât blame it all on others, Grandpa.â Christopher was cold. âWhy canât she talk? You were wrong in the first place. Thereâs nothing bad about Kate. The bad ones are the Morris family. We donât deserve her!â
âWhat are you talking about?â Felix was furious. âWho is she to be picky about? Sheâs a woman whoâs going to remarry. Itâs her honor to be married into the Morris family. How dare she reject us? If she had been smart enough, she couldâve just given the land deed to me and have children at home.â
âThatâs enough!â Christopher was mad. âWho do you think Kate is? And who do you think you are?â
Felixâs face turned pale.
âStop being so arrogant,â Christopher said angrily. âI know about how you and that woman treated Mom! After all these years, and now youâre doing the same thing to the woman I like. Iâm telling you now thatâs intolerable! Whether I get married to Kathleen or not, I wonât allow you to insult her like that!â
âYouâre out of your mind!â Felix was mad. He turned to look at Emily. âLook at your son!â
Emily frowned.
âWhy are you blaming Mom?â asked Christopher coldly.
At that moment, Aaron came back.
He could hear them arguing from the courtyard.
It was apparent that he knew the reason behind the argument.
âYouâre back just in time, Aaron! Look at them!â Felix said angrily. âWhat kind of head of the family are you?â
