Tyson heaved a sigh of relief.
Mr. Macari isnât being sarcastic today, after all.
âHave Vanessaâs people gone to the villa?â Samuel asked.
âShe did send some scouts to gather information,â Tyson reported. âIn response, I had sent our defense the items according to your instructions, Mr. Macari. They should make a move tonight.â
âGood,â Samuel said calmly. âLet them make the first move tonight. If they decide to attack, weâll just send them a message. Thereâs no need to overdo it.â
Tyson nodded. âYes, sir.â
âWhatâs going on at Yoeger Group?â Samuel asked next.
âNothing much.â Tyson hesitated for a while before adding, âI heard that Yareli has returned to the country. Apparently, sheâd gotten a divorce from the son of the Yates family.â
Samuel chuckled grimly. âShe left Joel Yates?â
Tyson nodded in response.
âThe Yoegers are an ungrateful bunch,â Samuel said scornfully. âContact Joel and extend an offer to a partnership on my behalf. I can help him achieve revenge.â
âYes, sir. Consider it done.â Tyson nodded again.
âReturn to the office with these documents,â Samuel ordered. âWeâll talk about everything else tonight.â
âYes, Mr. Macari.â Tyson held the thick stack of documents against his chest and turned to exit the room.
Upon passing the ward next door and noticing the ajar door, he glanced inside to discover, to his astonishment, that Kathleen had settled down and that Christopher had arrived.
The way Old Mrs. Macari treats them really blurs the distinction between which one is her grandson and which one isnât. Having Kathleen move out might be her way of giving Kathleen and Christopher a chance to spend time together. If so, Samuel might lose miserably. As his assistant, I should think of something.
âWhat are you looking at, Tyson?â Diana glanced sideways at him.
âNothing, Mrs. Macari,â Tyson mumbled awkwardly. âIâm just concerned for Ms. Johnson. See you around, Ms. Johnson.â
Kathleen gazed at Tyson as he turned around and left.
Diana frowned. âThe people around Samuel sure are weird.â
âTyson isnât malicious, Old Mrs. Macari,â Kathleen explained. âWhenever Samuel couldnât keep me company, he would always send Tyson.â
âThat kid has plenty of money to throw about. You donât have much to thank him for,â Diana consoled her. âNo matter what they say, Katie, donât feel the need to take it all upon yourself. You donât need to be responsible for the lives of others. Your life should be the only one that matters.
Take charge of your own life, will you?â
Kathleen nodded. âI understand, Old Mrs. Macari. Donât worry. Iâll never put myself in that position again.â
Iâm not that pushover I used to be.
âGood. Now that Christopher is here, Iâll leave you two alone.â Diana stood up and smiled meaningfully. âChristopher, take good care of Katie for me.â
Christopher nodded. âDonât worry, Old Mrs. Macari.â
Diana left with Maria and entered the elevator.
âDo you think Ms. Johnson and Christopher would be better together, Madam?â Maria asked while helping the older woman in.
âWhat do you think?â Diana was curious.
âI donât have an opinion,â Maria said abashedly. âHaving lived with Ms. Johnson for a while and after getting to know her better, it seems to me that she treats Christopher like a friend and nothing more.â
âThat hardly matters,â Diana said earnestly. âRomance will blossom as long as friendship is established. Iâm only afraid that the pain that Katie had suffered may take more than a lifetime to heal.â
Maria understood Dianaâs worries. âIf Ms. Johnson does marry Christopher, what will become of Mr.
Macari?â
âHe deserves it,â Diana said fiercely. âDidnât Katie give him a chance back then? Instead of seizing it, he squandered it and caused things to get out of hand as they have.â
Maria didnât know what to say to placate the old lady.
âI wonât stop Katie if she wants to be with Christopher,â Diana continued with a deep sigh. âIâll even treat her like my own granddaughter. Samuelâll never know how much he owes Kathleen.â
Heâd just missed his chance of being with a woman who loved him to such a degree.
Christopher was looking at Kathleen meaningfully back at the ward after the two women departed. âI shouldâve come to see you last night, but my grandpa needed to be taken to the hospital as he wasnât feeling well.â
However, it was at a different hospital that Christopher had spent his night.
âItâs all right.â Kathleen shook her head gently. âIâm sorry about Old Mr. Morris. Donât worry about it.
You were just fulfilling your duty as a grandson. Iâll shake off this fever soon enough.â
Christopher looked at her calmly. âI heard you and Samuel were in the same ward last night.â
Kathleen nodded. âThe hospital told us that they were out of empty rooms. Even this ward had been arranged by Grandma. Fortunately, I wonât have to stay much longer.â
Christopher gazed at her meaningfully. âYou donât even suspect that Samuel did this on purpose?â
Kathleen blinked. âIs he capable of something that shameless?â
âYou donât know him well enough,â Christopher said enigmatically. âHe found Astrid, you know.â
Kathleen frowned at the news. âHow did you know?â
âAstrid told me personally.â Christopher met her clear eyes. âShe told me that there was some problem with her familyâs business and that Samuel agreed to help her on the condition that she came back to pester me.â
Kathleen was speechless with shock. How could Samuel do something that awful?
âMy relationship with Astrid was made clear a few years ago,â Christopher explained. âWe are only friends now.â
âYou donât need to explain, Christopher. I completely understand,â Kathleen said at once. âThough Astrid has feelings for you, you donât feel the same way.â
âI have rejected her as clearly as I can.â Christopher looked at Kathleen seriously. âIn fact, I told her quite plainly the last time I visited you that I would have my assistant handle her pleas for my help.
Rest assured, Iâll never have any contact with her.â
Kathleen chuckled. âWhy are you so nervous, Christopher? Do I frighten you?â
Christopher scratched his head. âIâm worried that you might misunderstand. I donât want you to feel insecure.â
Kathleen froze for a moment.
âThank you, Christopher.â Her voice was soft. âBut youâll miss a lot of great girls by being hung up on me.â
Though Astrid made things difficult for her, Kathleen could tell that the former really liked him.
âItâs better to reject someone outright rather than keep them hopeful, donât you think?â Christopher said after thinking about it. âI refused Astrid so she wouldnât waste her time with me and find her happiness instead.â
âIâ¦â Kathleen was at a loss for words.
âYou can reject me if you donât feel the same way, of course,â Christopher continued. âI donât have anybody at the moment. I wonât go out and have a rebound just because you turned me down. Iâll reject everybody else and wait for you in case you change your mind. Do you understand?â
Kathleen froze, not quite knowing what to say.
