In the evening, Samuel returned home as the sun was setting.
Kathleen had been drawing.
When she heard sounds coming from outside the door, she immediately got up.
A look of surprise appeared on her fair and delicate face when she went out. âY-Youâre back?â
Samuel stared at her.
Why is she so shaken up? I just happen to get off work on time.
âI told you Iâll come back earlier, didnât I?â Samuel said flatly. âYou seem unhappy.â
In the past, Kathleen would always welcome him warmly when he returned.
She would even jump into his arms if he was in a better mood.
Now, she did not seem very happy.
âNo, Iâm not unhappy.â Even Kathleen herself wasnât sure if she was happy or not.
Perhaps it was because Samuel had disappointed her too many times, so much so that she did not know what to feel anymore.
âWash your hands and come to dinner.â Samuel said coldly.
âOkay,â Kathleen replied indifferently.
She went to the bathroom to wash up.
Just then, a tall shadow suddenly shrouded her.
Samuel reached out and held her hands. âIâll help you.â
âIâm not a child.â Kathleen puffed her cheeks. She looked cute that way.
âSo⦠I canât help if youâre not a child?â Samuel gave her a gentle peck on the cheek.
Kathleen wanted to evade him, but she was trapped in Samuelâs arms.
Her body was quite soft.
Dirty thoughts aroused in Samuelâs mind as she squirmed in his arms.
âDonât move.â Samuelâs voice was deep and hoarse. âIf you keep moving, Iâll eat you before dinner.â
Kathleen bit her lip angrily. âOne month!â
âItâs less than a month.â Samuel smiled.
Kathleen remained silent. She gritted her teeth.
Samuel helped her wash her hands before letting her go.
Once Kathleen was freed from his arms, she headed to the dining room and waited for him.
Samuel came soon after.
He sat down.
Maria had already prepared dinner.
Kathleen and Samuel dug in once they were seated.
They did not interact with each other at all throughout the meal.
Samuel was used to Kathleen telling him everything about her day.
He found it odd that she was being so quiet.
âWhat have you been doing today?â Samuel asked.
âIâve been painting.â Kathleen knew that she couldnât hide from Samuel the fact that she was working for Federick.
Since it was impossible to hide it, Kathleen did not wish to make things difficult for herself.
Samuelâs face darkened. âAre you really going to keep this job?â
Kathleen glanced at him calmly. âThis job isnât embarrassing you, is it?â
Samuel looked at her coldly. âDo you think thatâs what I meant?â
âIf not, what else do you mean?â Kathleen asked meaningfully.
âKathleen, I provide you with a hefty sum for living expenses.â Samuelâs voice was rather cold.
Why does she want to take on such an exhausting job? If sheâs short on cash, she could have just told me.
Kathleenâs grip tightened on her fork. âIf you think itâs too much, you can reduce it. We can both contribute to the household expenses from now on. Iâm fine with that.â
Samuel felt a flicker of irritation.
Sheâs always twisting my words!
Kathleen drank her soup quietly. âSamuel, I need to work. I donât want my life to be completely under your control. Do you understand?â
Samuel froze.
âYou have control over my life as well as my finances,â Kathleen said bitterly. âIf I leave you, I will become useless. I donât want that, so I need to work.â
âI believe Iâve said before that we wonât get a divorce.â Samuel looked at her with a cold expression.
Kathleen lowered her eyes when she met his cold gaze. âIâm sorry. I canât trust you for the time being.â
âWhat do you want me to do?â Samuelâs voice remained ice-cold.
âThink about it, Samuel. You havenât forgotten Nicolette after so many years. Can you really forget everything about her now?â Kathleen asked flatly. âSo, Iâm sorry to say this, but I cannot believe you when you said we wonât get a divorce. I canât bring myself to believe it.â
Samuelâs eyes flashed coldly. âThen, what about the one-month deadline youâve set?â
âSamuel, itâs impossible for you to sever ties with Nicolette even if I gave you a year.â Kathleen said quietly as she put away her utensils, âThat one month is just a buffer.â
Samuel stared at her coldly. He wished that his eyes could tear a hole through her.
âSamuel, if we donât get a divorce, what do you plan to do with Nicolette?â When Kathleen was not acting coquettishly, she had the air of an aloof fairy.
Samuel said nothing.
âShe is the Yoeger familyâs illegitimate child. The Yoeger family wonât acknowledge her, so she is not entitled to any of their assets. That means youâll have to support her for the rest of her life, is that right?â Right then, Kathleenâs charming face was beautiful but cold. âIn that case, it will be impossible for you to sever ties with her in this lifetime. Youâll be at her beck and call whenever she wants you. My feelings wonât matter to you, and I wonât be able to stop you.â
âHow are you so sure that Iâll do that?â Samuel said, infuriated.
âBecause you have done it before,â Kathleen replied quietly. âSamuel, I canât accept that thereâs a woman out there whom you long for. Similarly, you canât accept Christopherâs feelings for me.â
Samuel froze.
âAre you surprised?â Kathleen went on indifferently. âJust because I donât have a temper, that doesnât mean Iâm not intelligent. I can tell that Christopher likes me. However, because of who we are, Iâve always avoided him. You saw him at Grannyâs house today. Thatâs why you said those weird things, am I right?â
Samuel stared at her coldly.
âSamuel, I want a husband who loves me wholeheartedly. I love you, but that does not mean I must stay with you.â Kathleen stood up. âAs long as Nicolette exists, we will never reconcile. Itâs time to let go.â
Kathleen turned around.
Just then, Samuel grabbed her wrist. He questioned her harshly, âDo you fancy Christopher?â
Kathleen smiled bleakly. âWhy donât you admit that youâve hurt me? Why are you accusing me of having feelings for other people instead?â
Samuelâs gaze remained ice-cold.
âDonât worry. Iâm not so desperate that Iâll settle for the first man I see,â Kathleen said proudly. âI wonât settle for just any man. My husband must love only me. He can only offer his love to me. If he does that to someone else, then I donât want him.â
âKathleen, you should know that Nicolette and I would have gotten married long ago if it wasnât for you,â Samuel retorted.
âDoes that mean I have to endure it?â A cold smile formed on Kathleenâs face. âSamuel, ask yourself. Is it really my fault that the two of you canât be together?â
Samuel frowned.
Kathleen was innocent in this matter.
She had never forced Samuel to marry her, and neither had she begged Diana to let her marry him.
Having stayed in the Macari residence for so many years, Kathleen had never done anything to make others dislike her.
When Samuel and Nicolette were dating, Kathleen had never harassed Nicolette.
She was not that sort of person.
She was willing to hide her feelings for Samuel in her heart forever.
Samuel and Nicolette could not be together because Nicolette was unwelcomed.
It was Diana and Wynnie who disapproved of their relationship.
Kathleen was aware of it all.
