Kathleen woke up after sleeping for only a short while.
For the past three days, she had been relying on IV drips to get all the necessary nutrients.
Hence, she felt hungry after waking up.
She sat up, wanting to look around the ward for something to eat.
To her surprise, she saw Christopher sitting beside her bed.
âChris?â Kathleen was taken aback. âHave you been here for a long time?â
Christopher nodded. âIâve been here for quite a while. I didnât wake you up since I noticed you were still sleeping.â
Kathleen pursed her lips. âIâm sorry for the trouble.â
âYouâre the patient. Why are you apologizing?â Christopher gazed at her, his heart aching. âAre you hungry?â
Kathleen was a little embarrassed when she answered, âA little.â
âYou donât look like youâre just a little hungry.â Christopher got to his feet and took out the thermal lunch box he brought. âYou were unconscious for three days. You havenât had anything apart from the IV drips. My mom made you some oatmeal. Here, try this.â
âOh, you didnât have to trouble Aunt Emily.â Kathleen felt bad.
âPlease. Donât treat us like strangers.â Christopher served her some oatmeal. âThere are also some toppings here. You can have it with the oatmeal.â
âOkay.â Kathleen took the spoon from him and ate slowly.
She ate rather gracefully.
On top of that, her pitiful looks made Christopherâs heart ache.
At that, he raised his hand and placed it on top of Kathleenâs head. âYou can rely on me, Kate.â
Kathleenâs cheeks flushed red, and she lowered her head without making a sound.
Christopher smiled gently. âDoes the topping suit your tastes?â
Kathleen nodded.
âThatâs great. I was the one who prepared it.â Christopher smiled faintly.
Kathleen was stunned. âYou made it?â
âWhat is it? Did you think I could not cook?â Christopher grinned. âIâve got great cooking skills, you know? If you donât believe me, Iâll make you some food and let you try them next time.â
âI believe you.â Kathleen took another mouthful of the oatmeal. âYou never lie.â
She trusted Christopher completely.
Everyone she knew said Christopher was a gentleman who lived by his principles.
He would never tell lies.
Thus, she believed he would never do so.
As Christopher watched her eat, he hesitated for a moment before asking, âDo you have any plans?â
Kathleenâs voice became grim. âI plan to divorce Samuel and cut all ties with him.â
Christopher fixed his gaze on her. âAre you not considering giving him a second chance?â
Kathleen shook her head. âIâm afraid I might be badly hurt by then.â
She hesitated once, which cost the lives of two of her unborn children.
If she continued being obstinate, she could lose her own life in the end.
Christopher nodded. âOkay. I understand.â
As long as she was firm with her decision, he could help her walk out of the terrible situation.
Right then, the door of the ward was pushed open.
Samuel walked in, carrying the food he had brought for Kathleen.
When he saw Christopher in the room, Samuelâs gaze darkened, and he uttered coldly, âWhy are you here?â
âMy mom made her some oatmeal and told me to bring it to her,â Christopher answered impassively.
Samuel cast him a cold gaze.
Is that so? Christopher obviously has ulterior motives toward Kathleen. Heâs definitely trying to take advantage of her.
Christopher rose to his feet. With a stern voice, he said, âSamuel, you can stop making wild guesses in your mind. Iâm going to tell you honestly that I like Kathleen. In fact, Iâve liked her for ten years.â
Kathleen froze.
What did he say? He likes me? For ten years?
Samuel gripped the items in his hands so tightly that his knuckles paled. âBut she doesnât love you.â
Christopher glanced at Kathleenâs delicate yet pale face with a heartbroken gaze. âKate, I was the person who got you out of the water ten years ago.â
Samuelâs gaze darkened, and he quickly turned to Kathleen, who knitted her brows.
âI know,â she said.
Christopher was dumbfounded. âY-You knew?â
Kathleen nodded. âI knew it all along.â
Christopher was puzzled. âThen, why did you say Samuel was your savior? I kept thinking-â
Kathleen stared at him calmly. âThatâs another matter.â
Confused, Samuel asked, âI saved you?â
Kathleen cast him a cold gaze. âAs expected, you donât remember it.â
âWhen did this happen? Tell me!â Samuel stepped forward and grabbed her wrist.
She had lost weight again over the past three days.
Her wrist was terrifyingly skinny.
âWhy should I tell you?â A look of disdain flashed past Kathleenâs eyes. âWhatâs the point of telling you? Does it change anything?â
Samuel demanded sternly, âTell me!â
Kathleen cast him an emotionless gaze. âYouâll never know about it.â
Samuel gazed at her intently.
He knew Kathleen hated him, and the hate had offset her love for him during the past ten years.
He knew Kathleen no longer loved him.
Even so, Samuelâs heart ached.
Meanwhile, Christopher frowned.
He originally thought Kathleen would realize she had fallen in love with the wrong person once he made things clear.
Truth was, she knew about it all along.
âChris, thanks for bringing me the oatmeal. There are some things Samuel and I still have to deal with. Could you please go home first?â Kathleen said gratefully. âAnd thank you for saving me.â
Christopher gazed at her seriously. âIâll see you again tomorrow.â
âOkay.â Kathleen nodded.
With that, Christopher turned around and left.
Soon, Samuel and Kathleen were the only ones left in the room.
Kathleenâs eyes were pretty, yet they had a frosty gaze at the same time.
âSamuel, letâs get divorced.â Kathleenâs voice was hoarse and cold. âYou and I canât continue living together. Letâs not torture ourselves.â
âDo you not love me anymore?â Samuel whispered hoarsely.
âI donât. I donât love you anymore.â Kathleenâs gaze was so cold as if it had a layer of frost. âSamuel, thereâs absolutely no room for discussion for this matter.â
âI donât believe you.â Samuel pulled her into his embrace and placed his chin on her shoulder. âI donât believe you, Kate! How could you stop loving me just like that?â
Kathleen did not return his hug. She merely placed her arms on the sheets. âBecause Iâve given up on you. Donât worry. Even if I donât love you, I can still love someone else.â
She had merely lost the ability to love him.
Samuelâs heart ached badly. He felt utterly depressed.
âKate, please give me another chance. Please?â Samuel was truly panicking.
He did not know how to win her back.
âNo.â There was deep disappointment in her voice. âSamuel, I donât have the energy to love you anymore. Really. I donât. What I want now is to live in a world where you donât exist and forget you gradually. I want to remove you from my life completely.â
I want to get rid of him, even if it hurts. Iâm going to feel numb after the pain, anyway. After that, Iâll get used to it. It wonât hurt once Iâm used to it. The wound will slowly heal. By then, Iâd have forgotten Samuel completely.
âSamuel, I want to start a new life.â Kathleenâs gaze was still frosty as ever. âFor the past ten years, my life revolved around you. I just want to live a life without you. Can you let me do that?â
Samuel tightened his arms around her. âNo! Kate, you must love me! You must!â
Kathleen scoffed, âSamuel, youâre the greediest and most shameless man Iâve ever met. Are you trying to get into multiple relationships at the same time? Iâm sorry. I canât be a part of that.â
âKate, Iâm not in multiple relationships. Youâre the only one I have.â Samuel was panicking for real.
âPlease donât leave me, Kate. Iâll give you time to recover, okay?â
Kathleen took a deep breath. âSure, but I have a condition.â
âOkay. What is it?â
He was determined to agree to any request she would make.
âI want Nicolette to pay the price,â Kathleen said coldly. âI want her to be unable to walk for the rest of her life.â
