RYDER
I stared in shock as I watched the Luna connect the dots.
âRyder . . . as in . . .â she began, tears forming in her eyes.
âYou know, Iâm starving. Adara, letâs grab our dinner,â I interrupted, pushing Adara to the kitchen.
âWhat the heck, Ryder?â Adara said as we grabbed our plates.
âItâs nothing . . .â I said, looking back at her mother, who was still standing there, staring at me, her eyes glassy with unshed tears.
âThat was certainly not nothing,â Adara replied with sarcasm.
âItâs one of those things I donât want to talk about,â I responded, and she finally took the hint.
âFine . . .â she said, shaking her head with irritation.

That evening, I walked back to my room and opened the door, the hairs on my neck standing up.
I looked around the room and found the Luna sitting in the chair across from the bed. She stood and looked at me with tear-filled eyes.
âWe thought you were dead . . .â she whispered.
âI donât know what youâre talking about,â I replied, my voice cold and even. âYou must have me confused with someone else.
She stepped forward. âIâm not confused. You are RyderâRyder James. You donât remember me, but your mom and I were best friends. I was there when you were born.â
âAnd where were you when my family was killed and my pack decimated?â I snapped, fighting back the tears that threatened to fill my eyes.
She lowered her head. âWe didnât know. When we received the call for help and made it there, the entire pack was already dead. We were too late.
âWhen we couldnât find you after searching for over a week, we assumed you had been killed somewhere in the forest. If I had known you were . . .â
I let out a low growl. âIf you were best friends with my mother, why donât I remember you?â
She shrugged. âAfter we each became Lunas of our own packs, we didnât make visits as much. I havenât seen you since you were six. But we kept in contact. We would talk weekly.â
She looked up at me with a smile. âShe told me how strong you were becoming. I canât believe how much you look like her. I should have recognized you.â
âThe beard probably threw you off.â I smiled lightly. I took a deep breath, knowing my secret was no longer just mine. âWhat are you going to do now that you know who I am?â
She stepped forward. âWell, first, Iâm going to hug you. Then . . . Weâll just have to figure that out.â
I stiffened as she embraced me tightly. She breathed deeply. âRyder, Iâm so glad you found us, and that you and Adara are mates. Your mom and I always dreamed you would end up together.â
I softened and found myself hugging her back. She was warm and oddly familiar. She pulled back after a few moments and wiped her tears away.
âDoes Adara know?â
I shook my head. âShe only knows Iâm an Alpha, not about who I am.â
She nodded her head in understanding. âDo you want me to keep your secret? Itâs going to come out sooner or later. My husband already suspects something. He will connect the dots soon.â
I let out a long exhale. âWhat will happen when he knows?â
She shook her head. âIâm not sure. Now that we know who you are, you have more right than anyone to be on that land. If you want, I can tell you everything I know about that night.â
I nodded my head. âIâd like that.â
We walked out of my room, into the Alpha apartment, and sat on the couch in the living room.
âI donât know how much you remember, but that night ten years ago, the rogues had somehow banded together and had become organized.
âThey attacked your pack brutally and without warning. Thatâs how they were able to kill so many, so quickly. They were out for blood and nothing else.
âYour lands are still uninhabitedânobody wants to take over those lands after what happened to your pack.â
I lowered my head. âSo it wasnât another pack, it was a group of rogues?â
âNot just a groupâan army. Your pack was attacked by several hundred rogues.â
âWhat happened to them? They just killed my family and then left?â I asked, my anger pushing to the surface.
âWhen we arrived and found your pack destroyed, White Moon and the surrounding packs grouped together and wiped them off the face of the earth,â she replied, her tone dark.
âTheyâre all dead?â I asked quietly.
âEvery single one of them,â she said before standing. âYou are the only one left of Black Trail and the rightful Alpha and protector of those lands. If you wish to return there, I have no issue with it.â
I looked up at her, her tired face showing kindness and regret.
âThank you. I lived alone for so long though, Iâm not sure I want to go back to that. And Iâm not sure Adara would let me . . . â
She laughed. âSheâs strong willed, that one. But you should let her make that decision. She might surprise you.â
I shook my head. âI couldnât take her away from her home to live alone in a big pack house by ourselves in an attempt to rebuild.â
âYes, but if anyone can handle it, she can,â the Luna replied. âTell her who you are, explain your past. Iâll talk with Mason. Heâs going to be so angry at himself when he realizes how he treated you.â
I scowled. âHe should be. But I also wasnât very cooperative. He was just trying to protect his people.â
She nodded her head. âWhen those rogues attacked our borders, he panicked, thinking what had happened to your pack was happening again.â
I understood that. I would have done the same thing. I stood from the couch and offered a small smile. âThank you, Luna.â
âPlease, call me Kendra,â she offered, before hugging me again.
We separated when we heard a cough from the apartment entry.
âUhhh... Whatâs going on?â Adara asked, curiosity written on her face.
âAdara, we need to talk...â I said hesitantly.
