ADARA
~THAT SON OF A Bâ~
~Oh hush . . .~ I said, interrupting my wolfâs now twelve-minute-long rant in my head.
~He threatened us! He tried to use us to escape! We helped him and he just . . . I canât believe him! How are you not as angry as I am right now?!~ my wolf screamed in my mind.
I sat on my bed and shook my head. The guy was a jerk for sure, but I knew I could take care of myself.
~We both know you could have ripped him to shreds in seconds, calm down,~ I replied to my wolf, laying down in the bed.
The next morning, I woke to a text from my Uncle Rick: ~Still with Missy, going to need you to take care of the prisoner again this morning.~
I scowled. I had no desire to see that man ever again. I walked downstairs for breakfast, a dark cloud hanging over me.
âWho peed in your Cheerios?â Austin asked as I sat down.
âJust dragging this morning. Donât really want to do anything today,â I replied.
Austin chuckled. âDad told us how you handled that rogue last night. Pretty awesome, sis.â
I smirked, remembering how I had taken him down with ease. I knew it was mostly because I had surprised him, but he had gotten the drop on me first, so I didnât feel bad.
âWhy donât you go take care of him and then meet me at the pool. We can go for a swim this afternoon,â Austin offered.
âYouâre being uncharacteristically nice this morning,â I replied, giving him a sideways glance.
He shrugged. âMaybe I want to hang out with my sister.â
I laughed. âYeah right. Whose pants are you trying to get into?â
âPennyâs, but thatâs beside the point,â he said with a smirk.
âFine, Iâll meet you at eleven,â I said with a roll of my eyes.
I walked up to the counter and spoke to the head cook. âHas breakfast been sent down for the prisoner yet?â
âNot yet,â she replied. âI have it right here actually. Are you going down?â
I nodded, taking the plate from her and walking to the basement door. I walked down the stairs and gave the night shift guard a smile. âGood morning, Liam.â
The middle-aged man gave me a wink. âMorning, Adara. How are you doing?â
âIâm alright, just here to check on the prisoner. Can you let me in?â I replied sweetly.
He gave me a nod and opened the cell door. I saw J sitting in the corner and gave him a scowl.
âNo smile for me?â he taunted.
âI only smile at people I like,â I replied, throwing a bit of sass his way. I placed my bag on the edge of the bed and handed him his plate. âHereâs your breakfast. Eat up.â
âDid you poison it?â he grumbled, picking at the eggs.
âNo. Thatâs a good idea though,â I replied, still angry at him about last night.
He ate his food quickly and set his plate down. I sat beside him on the bed and unwrapped his hands. They were healing well.
âThese look good, I think you can keep the bandages off now.â
I crumpled up the used bandages and put them in my bag before grabbing some ointment. I pulled open the cap and began to spread some on his hands.
âIt was nothing personal . . .â
I looked up with narrowed eyes. âExcuse me?â
His crystal blue eyes looked into mine. âI said it was nothing personal. You are the Alphaâs daughter, I knew I could use that to get out of here.â
âYeah? And how did that work out for you?â I frowned and looked down again. âI still hate you.â
âFair enough,â he said quietly. âI donât really care either way.â
I finished spreading the ointment and placed the tube in my bag. I stood from the bed and turned to him, my face expressionless. âHave a good day, J.â
I left the holding cells and made my way upstairs to change. I pulled on a black, strappy, one-piece bathing suit and grabbed a towel before heading back downstairs.
When I walked out back, Austin was already there with several other wolves our age.
âHey!!! Adara! You made it!â he hollered from the pool.
I set my towel down before sitting down on the edge. Johnny swam up to me, resting his elbows on the edge of the pool beside me. âHey Adara, how are you doing?â
I smiled. I knew Johnny had a little thing for me, but I never encouraged it. I was serious about waiting for my mate. âIâm alright, thanks.â
âOf course sheâs alright!â Austin laughed as he swam toward us. âShe is an alpha! She could have laid him flat without flinching.â
I laughed. âIâm not THAT good.â
Johnny shook his head in disagreement. âIâm not too sure about that. You got him pretty good last night.â
âThanks.â I smiled. I slid off the side of the pool into the cool water.
The group of us spent the rest of the afternoon there, swimming and sunbathing, and enjoying the day. There were few days when we werenât all working or busy and I was enjoying relaxing a bit.
Austin detached his lips from Pennyâs for a moment and looked down at his watch. âWell guys, itâs just about time for dinner. Should we head in?â
I nodded, knowing I needed to shower off all of the chlorine and sunscreen. As we all separated, each person heading back to their own home, Austin and I walked up to the pack house.
âI keep forgetting to askâhow is training with Dad going?â I asked as we walked inside.
âEh.â Austin shrugged. âItâs all office work and no fun.â
I chuckled. âWhat did you think being Alpha was like?â
Austin threw his arm around my shoulder. âGirls. As far as the eye can see!â he said, waving his other hand out into the air.
I shrugged him off. âYouâre such an idiot.â
He laughed. âHey, I enjoy the simple things.â
I shook my head. âOne of these days youâre going to find a mate and she is going to be pissed youâve slept your way through the entire single she-wolf population of this pack.â
He shrugged before walking into his room. I let out a sigh and walked into mine.
~Soon. Weâll find our mate soon. Our birthday is only a few months away and weâll be able to find him,~ my wolf said with hope.
I rolled my eyes. âHopefully he isnât like Austin . . . â
