Chapter 27
Lily spoke slowly, her voice languid yet chilling.
Susanâs heart pounded rapidly as Lilyâs gaze met hers. It was strange that a single look from Lily sent shivers down her spine. What was it about her that made her feel so uneasy?
Susan averted her gaze, annoyed at her own fear of Lily. If Shaun werenât here, she wouldâve given Lily a piece of her mind.
But with both Shaun and Daniel being Loldâs friends and Lily being Loidâs fiancée, she couldnât afford to offend her.
âYouâve misunderstood,â Susan said, trying to maintain her composure. âI just came to visit your grandmother. She didnât want to grovel before Lily, but she had no choice. After all, Loid was someone she couldnât mess with.
Lily let out a mocking laugh, her eyes gleaming with icy disdain. âYou donât deserve to visit my grandmother!â
Susanâs face turned ashen with anger, but she held back. âLily, no matter what, Iâm still your mother. How can you speak to me like that?
Shaun sniggered, a hint of reguishness creeping into his demeanor, perhaps inspired by Lily. âSo, youâre a mother now? I thought you werenât even human.â
Hearing that, Susan was flustered âShaun, Youâve misunderstood.â Her voice trailed off. She was unsure of how to defend herself. She had no idea how much sham had overheard. For now, all she could do was lower herself and plead.
Shaun scoffed. âThe key isnât whether I misunderstood but whether Loid did. You should be more concerned about that.â
Turning to Loid, he added, âIsnât that right?â
Susanâs eyes widened in disbelief as she stared at the man standing beside Lily. âYouâre⦠Loid?â
Shannon hadnât yet told Susan that Laldâsess had been cured. Susanâs eyes widened in disbelief as she stared at Loid. How could this be? Wasnât she told that his face was disfigured? But why did his face look flawless?
There wasnât a single blemish in sight, as this features had been meticulously sculpted by the hand of a great artist.
What on earth had she done? Even if a man like Loid had only two years left to live, marrying him would not have been a loss for Shannon. Perhaps after Loidâs passing, Shannon could even inherit a large portion of his wealth.
But instead, she had given such a good man to Lily, and she allowed Lily to bully her. Susan truly hated herself.
Loid raised his eyes and glanced at Susan with an indifferent expression His thin lips parted slightly as he said, âThe Martinezes? Very well.â
These few words made Susan shver involuntarily.
Loidâs ruthless reputation was widely known. He was regarded as coldâblooded and cruel, and those who crossed him often met grim fates. If Loid were to intervene on Lilyâs behalf, the Martinez family would be doomed.
Susan couldnât care less about her dignity anymore. She hurriedly grabbed Lilyâs hand and said with emotion, âLily, I was just joking with your grandmother. Youâre my daughter. How could I not love you? Donât worry, Iâll take good care of your grandmother and ensure she proves the best treatment.â
Lily raised her eyebrows slightly as she looked at Susan without any emotion.
Sensing Lilyâs lack of response, Susan continued, âAs you know, Iâve been married twice before. It wasnât easy for me to marry into the Martinez family. Now that theyâre covering your grandmotherâs medical expenses, I have to be mindful of their feelings. Thatâs why I was a bit harsh with my words.
âPlease donât take it personallyâ
Her words were laced with emotion, but even a fool could detect the underlying threat
Lily pulled her hand back without changing her expression. Her gaze was fixed on Susanâs anxious face. A sudden smirk played on her lips. âMoney? Do I not have any?
Shaun scoffed. âOf course, she does. Lilly is Loidâs wife, Why would she be short on cash? If the Martinez family canât afford it, then donât bother. Loid will naturally cover the medical expenses.â
