Chapter 37
Lily gave Susan a dismissive look and got into the car without saying a word,
Desperately pounding on the car door, Susan pleaded, âLily, I beg you, please forgive me.â However, her pleas fell on deaf ears. Lily remained silent, offering no response
shaun pulled her aside and scoffed, âYouâre really shameless, arenât you? You mercilessly berated her in front of Belinda this afternoon, and now youâre demeaning yourself by being for your own interests? How low can you go?â
Shaun was truly disgusted by Susan. He couldnât believe that a mother could treat her own child like that. There was simply no one worse.
Susan was too afraid to look Shaun in the eye. She lowered her head and remained silent.
Loid merely glanced at her before opening the car door and getting in. Shaun and Daniel followed suit, ignoring Susan as well.
As soon as the car drove away, Julia stormed out. Grabbing her cane, she started hitting Susan with it while yelling, âYou jinx! How could the Martinez family have ended up with a daughterâinâlaw like you? You ruined our investment! Why donât you just die?â
âMother, it wasnât me!â Susan cried. Juliaâs blow struck her hard, leaving her back with a dull ache. Though she couldnât right back, Susan explained, âInever said anything about cutting ties with Lily. She acted on her own. Please believe me.
Witnessing Susan being beaten, Shannon clenched her hands tightly together. Her eyes were blazing with anger. She struggled to contain her fury for a long moment before finally quelling it.
Shannon rushed to Juliaâs feet, tears streaming down her face âGrandma, please donât hit Mom! I know she wouldnât do anything like that. It must be Lily. Sheâs still resentful about Mom not raising her, so sheâs trying to burn Loid against us,â
As Shannen rushed over, she deliberately knelt right under Juliaâs cane. Startled by the sudden movement, Julia couldnât stop her swing in time and the cane accidentally struck Shannonâs face.
Julia quickly stopped and pulled Shannen up. âShannon, you silly child, why would you rush out like that? Come here, let me see where youâre hurt.â
Shannon buried her face in her hands, shaking her head and sobbing âGrandma, Iâm fine. I just canât bear to see Mom being punishedâ
Unsure of what to say, Julia sighed.
After a moment, Julia remembered something and asked, âBy the way, whatâs been going on with you these past few days? Why havenât you been able to charm Loid? Why did he
Cast you out?
Julia knew Shannon well. Obedient and sensible, she possessed a charm that effortlessly won people ever. She was also beautiful, which should have smitten Loid.
But Loid would rather choose Lily than Shannon. This seemed utterly bizarre.
âGrandma, itâs all Lilyâs fault! She framed me!â Shannon sobbed even harder. âI went to take care of her out of kindness, but she took advantage of Loidâs favor. She treated me like a servant and scolded me constantly.
âI donât know why, but Loid just likes her. Even his mother favors Lily. No matter what I do, they always look down on me.â
Julia was startled âMrs. Laurier is in Lagersfield?â
Shannon nodded. âYes, she came the day after we moved in. Sheâs very fond of Lily. She even wanted to cast me out that day, but 1 managed to stay after putting in a lot of effort.â Juliaâs frown deepened into a grim expression. It seems Lily isnât as innocent as we thought. Weâve all been fooled by her.â
Shannon sobbed.âGrandma, what are we going to do now? Loid hates me even more now.â
Î
Julsorted coldly. âIn that case, we must hold onto Loid even tighter. Donât worry, Shannon, Iâll figuresomething out.â
âAlrightâ
After they entered the house, Shannon looked toward the front door. Her tears instantly stopped as a glint of determination flashed in her eyes.
