âShe needs more time,â I tell Allie, who gives me a worried look.
âItâs been days,â she says, like I donât already know that.
âI know but she⦠she asked for more time. Iâm not going to push her if she isnât ready.â
Allie gives Bibiana a pointed look. âMaybe we canââ
âB, no. She said no. The answer is no.â Neither girl looks happy with my answer.
âShe has classes. Sheâsââ
âI spoke with the admin. They notified her teachers of the situation.â
Allieâs eyes widen. âOh. Wow. That was really thoughtful of you.â
I grunt. âSheâs got enough to worry about.â They both do.
Aaronâs in the other room, phone held up to his ear. Heâs been handling funeral arrangements. Trying to get the body transported back to Sun Valley so he can host a funeral, but itâs a slow-going process with a lot of paperwork and hoops to jump through.
âHowâs he doing?â I ask Allie.
She purses her lips. âAs good as can be expected. Heâs talking about it which is good. Heâs not holding everything in and letting the pressure build butââ
He snaps the phone shut and throws it across the room where it shatters against the wall. Yeah, heâs handling shit well alright.
âAaron?â I call, drawing his attention. âWhatâs up?â
His chest is heaving as he fights to pull himself together. âI have to fly out to Florida. They wonât release the body without me physically confirming itâs her and signing off on some paperwork.â
He runs his hands through his hair, his movements agitated.
âWhen do you need to go?â I ask.
âAs soon as I can get there. I need to check flights andââ
âI got it.â
He frowns.
âPeretti and Price has a company jet. Iâll set it up. Just tell me when.â
He swallows hard and nods. âThanks, man.â
âNo worries. You want me to go with you?â
He looks at the door leading to the guest room, and I know what heâs thinking. I donât like the idea of leaving Kasey alone any more than he does, but the thought of him dealing with this alone doesnât sit well, either.
âYou should talk to her,â I suggest, but he shakes his head. âIâm serious, man. She could use her big brother.â
âHow does that help her? I canât tell her itâs going to be okay when I donât believe it myself, man. So what can I do? How can I fix this, because as far as I see it, I canât.â He hangs his head and walks out of the room, his shoulders hunched and head hanging low.
âOne of us can go with him,â Allie says. âYou take care of our girl. Theyâll get through this.â
I want to believe her, but itâs been four days since I brought Kasey back to our place. Four days and sheâs barely moved from the guest room. Sheâs not eating. She never talks. Itâs like the girl has gone catatonic. I donât know what to do and Aaronâs been fucking worthless, not that I can blame the guy.
Heâs either gone to Allie and Romanâs or heâs locked in his room, and now heâs going to fly to florida. How long will that take? How much longer can Kasey hide before shit gets serious?
âYeah, okay. Iâll make some calls and set up his flight. Just â¦â I hesitate, but someone else needs to know. I canât watch them both twenty-four seven. âCan I talk to you for a sec?â
Without needing to be asked, Bibiana excuses herself. âIâm going to head home. Call me if she changes her mind and wants to talk, okay?â
I nod and give her a quick hug goodbye, being careful of her swollen belly. She has a few months left, but already she looks ready to pop. When sheâs gone, I turn to Allie and consider what to tell her.
âAaronâs been dealing with ⦠things.â
She raises a brow. âYeah. His mom just died.â
I shake my head. âMore than that. I canât tell you the how or why. I shouldnât be telling you any of this so donât repeat it, not even to Roman. Okay?â
She nods, worry crossing over her face.
âAaron has PTSD.â
She opens her mouth to ask a question, but I raise my hand to stop her. âLike I said. I canât tell you the why or the how. Thatâs his story to tell when heâs ready, but itâs been getting worse. He wasnât handling it well before his mom died and now, well, itâs not going to get any better. Heâs just ignoring one problem in place of the other, and eventually the other shoe is going to drop. He doesnât sleep enough. He gets these night terrors where he wakes up panicked and drenched in sweat. And loud noises can set him off. Almost like a panic attack where he feels like the walls are closing in.â
âHas he talked to anyone?â
I shake my head. âHe wonât see a shrink. Iâve tried but he refuses. I just⦠you need to know what to look out for because heâs getting worse, not better.â
She nods. âOkay. What do I need to know.â
Fuck. Where did I even begin? âHe needs to be in a relaxed environment as much as possible. No parties. No loud, sudden noises. He tries to push it. He thinks if he exposes himself to the shit that sets him off that itâll desensitize him to it, but that doesnât work. Video games with shooters can be a trigger. The smell of smoke. If he doesnât sleep for more than three days heâs got pills heâs supposed to take to help with that. They knock him out, but he wakes up feeling hungover so he doesnât like taking them, but if heâs not sleeping he has to. It gets worse when he doesnât.â
She nods. âOkay. I can look out for that.â
I take a breath and tell her the last thing. âIf you startle him, he can lash out. Physically. He pulls himself back once he recognizes you but heâs landed a punch a time or two. For me, thatâs not a problem. With you or another chick, it will be. Donât surprise him. If you walk in a room and heâs spacing out, call his name. Donât touch him until he acknowledges you. Got it?â
âYeah. I got it.â
âGood. Iâm gonna make a few calls and get that flight sorted out. Let me know if shit changes with him or if you need me for anything else.â
She nods and I go to my room to make the call. My parents will kill me for this. Not because they give a shit if I use the jet, but because we had an agreement I wouldnât use Price assets unless I was willing to be an active member of the familyâwhich Iâm notâbut itâll take them a while to notice, and what they donât know wonât hurt them. Itâll just bite me in the ass later.
