âCongratulations.â Arthur squeezes my shoulder. âYouâve made me proud, boy.â Dressed in a suit, with his silver hair coiffed back from his face, he looks handsome. The tiredness I saw the last time has faded. He takes my wifeâs hand and bends to kiss it. âCongratulations, Duchess.â
âThank you.â My wife smiles back.
âIt was a beautiful ceremony.â Imelda whoâs dressed in a suit which is a twin to Arthurâs, right down to the bow tie, lowers her chin. âAnd mercifully short, if I might say so.â
My wife laughs. âOne of the things my father acquiesced to.â
âThere were others which he refused to budge on, I assume?â Imelda says shrewdly.
âHeâs a stubborn man, and a king.â My wifeâs eyes shadow. âHe has responsibilities.â
âNone more important than the one toward you.â Imelda pats my wifeâs hand. âYouâre a dutiful daughter.â
âAnd my wife.â I put my arm around Auraâs shoulders. Iâm never going to miss a single opportunity to say that aloud.
She leans into me, and I can tell sheâs pleased. âA very happy wife today.â She chuckles. âI hope the two of you will be staying on and taking in the sights of my beautiful country?â
âAlas, we have only one more day, which we plan to spend at the Fishermenâs Islands.â
Sheâs referring to the mini archipelago of seven islands near Verenza, a favorite among tourists.
âJust a day?â my wife cries.
âYouâd think this old man would enjoy his retired life and spend more time taking in the sights, but he insists he needs to be back for an important meeting.â Imelda shrugs.
I turn to Arthur. âIs it because Nathan and Quentin are both staying here to oversee the security arrangements at Verenza and canât fill in for you?â I frown.
âYes, it isââ Arthur begins to say but Imelda nudges him.
âWhat he means to say is that heâd have gone anyway. And itâs right that they are here until we neutralize this risk to the Duchessâ life.â She turns to him. âIsnât that what you were going to say, dear?â
Arthur looks taken aback, then nods. âYes, sheâs right. Iâd much rather the men be here and support you.â
âI am very grateful to all the Davenports for their help,â my wife murmurs.
âYou are one of us now,â Arthur points out.
âI am,â she agrees.
Arthur turns to me. âWhile youâre here, you should take a look into the investment plan for the money being invested into Verenza.â
I jerk my chin. âIâve already touched base with the leader of the planning team.â
My wife whips her head in my direction. âWhen were you planning to tell me?â
I scowl. âI wasnât aware I had to keep you posted about my movements?â
She firms her lips. âYou were discussing how to invest the money being spent in my country over the next few years. Money which came into the country because I agreed to marry you. Money which will impact the future of my country.â
Goddam, she has a point. I screwed up.
While I try to formulate a response, she squares her shoulders. âMy father and Fred chose not to involve me in financial matters related to my country. I didnât expect my husband would follow in their footsteps.â The skin stretches tightly over her cheekbones; disappointment turns her lips down.
âExcuse me.â She pivots and walks away, back straight, anger shimmering off of her in waves. Sheâs magnificent, this woman. My wife.
I definitely did mess up. âFuck,â I swear under my breath.
Imelda turns on Arthur. âCouldnât you keep your mouth shut?â
âWhat did I do?â Arthur looks genuinely puzzled.
Without another word, I head in the direction sheâs taken. And when she slips out onto the balcony, I follow her, then shut the door behind us.
She hears me but doesnât turn. Instead, she walks over to the far corner, which is in shadows, and sinks down on a bench. When I reach her, I sink down next to her. She turns her head away.
âIâm sorry, I didnât mean to come across asâ ââ
âArrogant and condescending?â
I wince. âYouâre right, and I was both. But old habits die hard.â
She finally turns to me. The moonlight turns her blue eyes into a color as dark as the sapphire on the ring I had planned on giving her today. So, why didnât I? What stopped me? What keeps me from being fully invested in this relationship, when I know Iâm falling for her?
âThatâs very candid of you.â
âItâs the effect you have on me.â I hold her gaze, wanting to touch her but knowing itâs not the time yet. âIâm not ashamed to say I have a big ego, and I have reason for that.â
She scoffs. âIf thatâs an apologyâ ââ
âThat wasnât, but this isâ¦â Once more, I go down on my knee in front of her. âIâve never bowed to anyone, not man or woman, but I do to you.â I bend my neck. âOnly to you, my wife. And know that Iâm sorry for what I said earlier.â
Some of the tension goes out of her body. âYou are?â
I nod. âWeâre husband and wife. A team. A partnership. And like any partnership, we need to keep the channels of communication open at all times. And that includes my telling you about my plans to be an advisor to the planning team for investing the Davenportsâ money in Verenza.â
Her forehead smooths out. âIâm so sorry I got upset. I donât know what came over me. Itâs your moneyâ ââ
âOur money.â
âOur money.â She nods. âYou should definitely be involved in deciding how it needs to be channeled.â
I rise up and sit next to her. âAnd you need to be on that planning team.â
