Before Lane could utter a word, Dorothy flatly rejected him.
âJeffrey, thereâs nothing I want to diapusa with you.â
âYouâd prefer they hear about your past?â
Dorothyâs posture noticeably stiffened. Was Jeffery threatening her?
He guessed that Corothy hadnât shared her history with Everett with anyone else. He didnât know why,
but he was sure she had her reasons and that they were enough to make her Isten to him
âWhat are you two taking about?â Lane asked as his eyes darted between Dernthy and Jeffrey.
Jeffrey smiled and said, âYou might not know this, but Ms Sanchez used to be involved with..â
âEnough!â Dorothy cut him off sharply and tumed her gaze to Jeffrey. âWe can talk, but lets go over
there.â
Jeffrey gave an CK gesture with his hand. âLane, you go ahead. Donât worry, Ill make sure she comes
for dinner
Lane had no idea what was going on,
He looked at Dorothy. Since she did not protest, he could only nod. âOkay, 111 wait for you..
As he turned and disappeared into the restaurant, Dorothy spoke in a cold voice, âMr. Turner, recall we
have no quarrel. The Lopez family and Heather wanted me to stay away from Everett, and I did Why
are you here threatening me?â
Jeffrey pulled out a pack of cigarettes and it cre. âIâm just wondering how you got involved with Lane
The word ânvolved had a certain implication
It was hard not to think of something negative
Dorothy clenched her fists as her nails dug into her flesh. âMy relationship with him is purely
professional. If you think thereâs a problem, he can fire me. If youâre here just to humiliate me, Mr.
Turner, then please get to the point. I have work to do.â
Jeffrey took a drag from his cigarette and grinned. âWhy would I humnate you? Iâm just cuncus. You
had Everett wrapped around your finger and now Lane seems quite taken with you. And yet you marry
some nobody. Is this some kind of game? Dorothy, whatâs your real agenda?â
He could only assume that Dorothy was back for revenge.
Even though she obediently left Everett behind and didnât pursue the truth behind her motherâs death,
Jeffrey had a hunch that Dorothy wasnât so easy to get rid of. She didnt want money or power, so what
was her meal motive? Would she want to come back and redaim everything one day?
âSo, what are you afraid of? Why are you standing here and questioning me? Instead of answering.
Dorothy threw the question back at him.
Exactly! What was he afraid of? And what were the Lopez family and Heather afraid of?
If they hadnât done anything wrong, if they were truly innocent, why be afraid of her return?
Jeffrey was speechless. He hadnât expected Dorothy, after so many years, to have honed her wit and
become deadly sharp.
âI know youâre a good friend of Everettâs, and you want him to be with Heather. But all of that has
nothing to do with me now. As for your question, all I can tell you is that my goal is not to get back with
Everett,â
Jeffreyâs digarette ash fell to the ground, narrowly missing his hand.
He squinted at the woman standing before him. âDid you know heâs getting marned?â
âI knowâ
âAnd you donât care?â
Idonât.â
