âLane, imagine this. A little boy shows up out of the blue, claiming to be your son. You get a DNA test,
and, lo and behold, heâs yours. Howâd you react?â
Definitely baffled.
Heâd been with more women than he could count, some whose names he couldnât even remember. He
couldnât be one hundred percent certain that none of them had ulterior motives.
âBut hasnât Everett always been a saint? Can he be compared to me?â Lane chuckled. âWho knows?
Maybe heâs got a wilder side than both of us combinedâ
âThatâs impossible! Ever since he broke up with Dorothy, heâs practically been living at the office. Heâs
always online on the company. software.â
âDoes that necessarily mean he couldnât have done it?â
Jeffrey raised his voice. âHey! Why do I get the feeling youâve got a beef with Everett?â
Even this oblivious man, Jeffrey, could sense it
âIâm just stating the factsâ Lane smiled. âAlright, let me know if the kid turns out to be his son. I could
use a popcom moment.â
âScrew you!â Jeffrey said, then hung up.
He was about to call Everett when Heather started bombarding him with calls, like a woman
possessed.
Jeffrey didnât want to answer, but he accidentally did.
Heatherâs anxious voice came through. âWhere are you? L⦠I think Iâm having a heart attack
âWhat?â Jeffrey was taken aback. âSince when do you have heart disease?â
âNever mind that now. Can you come pick me up and take me to the hospital?
Jeffrey wanted to agree, but the kid was still sleeping. Should he wake him up now?
y second.
âJeffrey⦠are you going to abandon me too? Heather added. Her voice sounded genuinely distressed,
as if she could faint any âAlright, Iâm on my way Send me your location.â
Jeffrey was a softie deep down.
He got up and walked over to the sleeping Langston with a small smile tugging at his lips.
After all these years, he could finally see what Everett looked like sleeping. He must look exactly like
this kid.
Jeffrey didnât feel comfortable leaving him alone, fearing heâd wake up scared. So, he called his
assistant to come over immediately. and then he left.
He figured that in the half an hour it would take his assistant to arrive, the kid would be fine alone in the
room.
Jeffrey drove to the location Heather had sent.
was so remote that he wondered why Heather had chosen to live there.
Not only was it far from the city, it was also quite a distance from the Lopez Corporation
âWhy are you living here?â Jeffrey helped her to the car, gently opening the door for her.
âIâve been restledâs lately and unable to sleep. I thought the quiet here might help.â Heather looked
distressed. She was clutching at her chest the entire time.
Jeffrey glanced around the desolate surroundings and frowned. âYou sure know how to pick a spat.â
Heather shot him a look. âStop mocking me. If you donât want to help, you can leave. Let me die here
alone!
âI didnât say anything! Jeffrey rolled his eyes, started the engine, and pulled up the GPS to the nearest
hospital.
Before he could even pull out, his phone started ringing.
Suddenly, Heather clutched his arm and said, âOuch⦠it hurts so much!â
