The piercing sound of car alarms left Everettâs ears throbbing.
âJeffrey, Jeffrey!â
Everett called out, but received only silence in response.
Something was wrong.
Everett hastily dialed Kevinâs number, instructing him to find out where an accident had occurred on the
route to Bay Residence.
Langston, sitting next to him, was already a step ahead. He pointed to his phone screen, âItâs likely on
Labor Avenue; thereâs a massive traffic jam there.â
Everett glanced at him, nodding without hesitation. âStay at home. Iâll give you access to the Lopez
Corporation systems. Donât leave until Iâm back.â
Langston nodded. This wasnât the time to cause trouble. âAlright.â
By the time Everett arrived on the scene, Jeffrey had already been rushed to the hospital.
Everett headed straight for the hospital, where he found Heather standing outside the emergency
room. Her makeup was smeared from crying, and she seemed unable to stand without the support of
the wall.
âEverettâ¦youâre finally here! How could something like this happen to Jeffrey?â
Everettâs gaze first landed on the glaring red light of the emergency room before shifting to Heather.
âWho called to inform you?â
Jeffrey was on the phone with him when the accident occurred. Thereâs no way he couldâve contacted
Heather!
Caught off guard by his question, Heather momentarily forgot to continue crying. But she was a
seasoned liat quick on her feet.
âThe hospital called me. They mustâve thought I was a relative since my number was on top of his
contact listâ
Everett narrowed his eyes. He didnât believe a word Heather said.
Seeing his silence, Heather felt a pang of guilt and quickly changed the subject. âEverett, do you think
something bad will happen to Jeffrey? He was just working at the office, then suddenly, heâs in an
accident! I was so shocked when I got the call!â
âGet in touch with his parents.â Everett cut her off, not interested in her theatrics
âRightâ¦I forgot in all the panic! Iâll call them now!â
Heather turned away, heading towards a corner.
Everett watched her swiping his phone screen a few times.
Before long. Heather returned, a look of worry on her face. âJeffreyâs parents arenât answering their
phones! What should we do?â
As she spoke, she looked up to see Jeffreyâs fatherâs number displayed on Everettâs phone, clearly in a
call.
Everett calmly relayed the situation to Jeffreyâs father, then turned to Heather
âYou are involved in Jeffereyâs accident.â
âWhatâ¦how could that be? Jeffrey has been so kind to me, so I would never harm him! Weâre friends!
âThen why did you choose not to notify the Turners? You didnât even try to call his parents.â
If she had, his coll shouldâve gone to voicemail, not connected.
Heather hadnât expected Everett to trap her at every turn. â⦠I just dialed the wrong number in my
panic!â
âTye already, called the police. You can explain to them.â
He had no desire to engage with her any longer.
Heather stepped forward, trying to touch his arm, but Everett stepped away.
Her fists clenched, then suddenly relaxed. She laughed softly. âDo you despise me this much? Well, let
me tell you something! Werenât you searching everywhere to find out who that little boyâs parents are?
Iâll reveal it to youâheâs our child!â
