It was an ironclad excuse that sealed everyoneâs lips in an instant.
When the CEO handpicks an assistant, who dares to utter a word?
After the meeting. Everett stood up to leave, with Kevin trailing just behind him as they entered the
CEOâs private elevator.
Once the doors slid shut, Kevin finally broke the silence. âHuman Resources has notified Ms. Sanchez
about the position.â
âRight,â Everett responded, his face the picture of serenity. âSheâll probably ask to resign.â
He had Dorothy figured out long ago.
âIndeed, but sheâs got a contract. Ms. Sanchez wonât resign so easily.â
The elevator dinged, and the doors opened.
Everett strode out, then paused and glanced back at Kevin. âTell me, do you think what Iâm doing is a
bit underhanded?â
Despite the years at the helm, Everett had never abused his power or coerced anyone. Even when he
wanted Dorothy to join the Lopez Corporationâs headquarters, he had Kevin mentor her rather than
parachuting her into the position.
This was, perhaps, the first time Everett had been so oblivious to someone elseâs wishes
Kevin didnât see the issue. He chuckled, âMr. Lopez, why do you think we earn this money and hold this
power?â
Everett raised an eyebrow, prompting him to go on.
âIsnât it so we can do what we want and keep who we want?â
âMakes sense when you put it like thatâ
Everett chuckled, feeling the strain of his ungentlemanly actions fades. It was an unfamiliar way of
operating for him, but Kevin had no trouble adapting; he believed this was how a CEO should act.
Kenneth was unusually firm and adamant about Dorothy working at the Lopez Corporation.
âDorothy, you canât go!â
âI donât want to, but I have a contract! Itâs written clearly. How can I afford to pay the penalty?â Dorothy
wanted nothing more than to steer clear of the complexities of the Lopez Corporation, especially with
the whole Langston situation. The last thing she wanted was to get closer to Everett.
âIâll pay for it. However much it is? Iâll cover it!â
Dorothy sighed, looking at him helplessly. âKnowing the way Everett is forcing my hand, Iâd owe
billions.â
âThatâs extortion! Iâll get a lawyer to fight this.â
âForget it. We canât twist the arm of a giant.â Dorothy had come to terms with the reality.
Sheâd thought about struggling, about recklessness.
But the truth was, as long as Everett was set on having her, there was no escape.
Kenneth paced in front of her, clenching his fists.
âKenneth, donât worry. If he wants me there, Iâll go. It just means Iâll be more cautious and steer clear of
him. There wonât be anything between Everett and me again.â
âDonât you get it?â Kenneth furrowed his brows, his eyes full of concern. Iâm not afraid youâll get back
with Everett! Iâm
afraid that if you reappear, Eyerettâs parents and that woman named Heather will see you as a thom in
their side again!â Their tactics were never bound by morality, like how they had directly killed Bella.
