âAlright tell him Mammy turned into a butterfly and flew away!
Karen rolled her eyes. Tim gunna lay low for a bit then. When Kenneth gets here, you tell him Iâve
turned into a butterfly alongside your mom and fluttered off too!
âWhy canât you take me with you?â
Langston clutched at the hem of Karenâs sweater: âAunt Karen, donât leave me behind!â
Tve got my own storm to weather, bud.â
Karen lingered in the hospital room, mustering up the courage to call Kenneth.
As soon as he answered, he blurted out, âis something up with Dorothy?â
âUh sheâs fine, really happy!â
âGreat, fil freshen up and head over to the hospital to switch with you Got any cravings? I can bring
something by Kenneths relief was palpable, his voice noticeably lighter.
Karen was at a loss for words. And her hesitation didnât go unnoticed.
âWhatâs wrong?â
âBra⦠Dorothy, sheâs not at the hospital anymore.â Karen braced herself after the confession. âSheâs
gone to find Everett âWhat did you say?!â
âIt was Langston! He mustâve told her where Everett was Karen threw the kid under the bus without a
second thought!
After all, he was the one who stirred up trouble!
Langstonâs eyes widened. âAunt Karen! Are you seriously doing this?â
âYep, stop talking!â
Kenneth had no patience for their antics. After hanging up, he rushed to the hospital.
Upon amival, he found the two of them looking sheepishly at one another.
Taking a deep breath to avoid scaring Langston, Kenneth strode over and crouched beside him.
âLangston, can you tell Uncle Kenneth where your mon headed off to?â
Langston shook his head, unwilling to spill the beans.
âIâm trying to protect her not hurt your mom. Sheâs all alone, injured, and abroad. Are you okay with
that?â
Langston, still so young, hadnât really thought that far ahead, but Kennethâs words struck a chord.
âLook, tell me where she went, and I wonât stop her from going. I just want to make sure sheâs taken
care of. She canât even stand on her Own. What if sheâs bullied abroad with no one to help?â
Langston blinked and whispered, âWould you really let Mommy go?â
âI will! I mean⦠Iâve never been able to keep her anyway.â It wasnât the first time, after all. He was used
to it
âOkay, then.â
Langston sent Everetts last known location from his momâs phone to Kenneth, then added cautiously,
âKenneth, I think I chucked your passport when I was swiping my momâs. You might need to get a new
oneâ¦
Karen had been trying not to laugh, and finally managed to say, âLangston, you sure are your motherâs
son!â
With Langstonâs help. Dorothy made a beeline for Everettâs location.
Unable to stand, she traveled in a wheelchair.
She knew that even upon arriving, encountering Everett wouldnât be easy. But Dorothy was driven by a
single belief- She had to go! No matter how daunting the journey, she needed to be by Everellâs side.
The plane touched down as scheduled, and Dorothy sent Langston a message to let him know she
was safe before exiting t She was about to hail a cab when her phone rang. Locking down, she saw it
was a call from Lane.
