Karen glanced at his phone, her expression clearly stating she had no intention of taking it.
âNo need.â
No need?!
Jeffreyâs face darkened and even got a little grim, âNot even going to give me your number?â
Looking up, Karenâs eyes were filled with disbelief, as if the request was the most absurd thing sheâd
ever heard, âWhy would I give you my number?â
âWe just⦠you know,â Jeffrey stammered, struggling to find the right words in his cracked brain during
the early hours of the morning. âDonât you want to keep some sort of⦠memento?â
Karen laughed, âWith all the souvenirs youâve got, you wonât miss one from me. Once youâre back in
home, just hook up a few more times and consider it on my behalf.â
She wasnât about to get caught up in Jeffreyâs long list of conquests or leave her mark there.
Her instinct told her to distance herself.
Yet Jeffrey, visibly panicked, grabbed her arm and pulled her back into the room.
âKaren, are you playing me? After all the effort I put in, you think Iâm some gigolo?â
âAs if you didnât enjoy it!â Karen retorted, pointing to the evidence in the trash can, âYou went through
all of that!â
Silence fell between them.
âAre you finished? I really need to sleep now!â she said; her exhaustion made her vision blur.
But Jeffrey stood there, immovable, with anger brewed in his eyes.
âWhy did you suddenly decide to hook up with me?â
Karen paused, âI wanted to, so I asked. No big reason. Itâs not like I forced you. You agreed, didnât
you?â
Grinding his teeth, Jeffrey felt a mix of embarrassment and humiliation.
He had a thousand things he wanted to say, but all that came out was a scornful tone, âAre you always
this casual?!â
Karenâs fist clenched involuntarily, but she quickly relaxed.
âThink what you want,â she said, her tone dismissive. âI just thought you were hot. Sure, thereâs not
much to you beyond that, but your looks⦠theyâre appealing. I wanted a taste, thatâs all.â
It was the blunt truth.
None of her previous boyfriends, whether she slept with them or not, were as handsome as Jeffrey.
That was a fact.
She treated it as a bit of fun in a foreign land, and nothing more. It wasnât her first time, and she saw no
reason to make a big deal out of it. She wouldnât even mention it to a future partner. Thatâs how
inconsequential it was to her.
âJust wanted to try something new?â Jeffrey repeated her words, his frustration growing with each
syllable.
âYes.â Karen nodded earnestly, âYouâre like the fancy fruit on the top shelf of the grocery store.
Everyone wants a taste, but no one wants to buy the whole batch.â
Affording it was one thing, but even if you could, it didnât mean youâd want it all the time.
Premium fruit doesnât always mean itâs the bestâsometimes itâs just about the appealing exterior.
âGreat, just great!â Jeffrey sarcastically wanted to applaud her analogy, âIâm a piece of fruit?â
âPremium fruit!â Karen emphasized.
âTo hell with premium fruit!â
Jeffreyâs shout startled Karen, jolting her awake from her drowsiness.
âWhatâs your problem? Are you sick or something?â
âI thought you wanted-â he began.
âWanted what?â she asked.
âTo⦠To keep this kind of relationship going!â He was adamant not to say the words âboyfriendâ and
âgirlfriendâ first. He wouldnât lose this battle.
âOh.â Karenâs response was light and nonchalant, âThat explains the phone number. Then you
misunderstood. Iâm not interested in that. Can I go now? Iâm really tired!â
