CHAPTER 10: THE MONSTER OF THE WELL
Sirius approached April when she was alone and asked her.
What do you think youâre doing?
Helping.
I see that, but we donât have time for that, weâre in a hurry.
Yes, but I canât leave without helping these people, I canât abandon them to their fate.
Sirius gave a long sigh and said.
I understand that you want to help, but you shouldnât show your power, it can be dangerous.
And I donât plan to do it, thatâs why I said weâre healers.
I donât know anything about plants and Taren even less.
That doesnât matter, we just have to act as healers.
April approached the old man she had spoken to before and asked him where the well was. He told her it was contaminated, but she still insisted that he show it to her; when she got to the well, April looked in, the water looked black.
The water in this well, like the water in the rivers, has turned black, itâs contaminated.
And where do they get the water from?
Weâve been getting it from vendors who come from other kingdoms, but weâre running out of money, so our destiny is already written.
I donât think the same, destiny isnât something thatâs going to happen to you but what you want to happen to you, so you have to think that everything will turn out well, donât you think?
I hope itâs like you say, Iâve been in this village all my life, weâre all like a big family here, I wouldnât want to lose them.
And it wonât.
April motioned for Taren to take the old man away, she needed to be alone to purify the water.
Sir, could you show me where the sick are?
Of course, follow me.
We will go now.
Sirius said. Once they were far enough away so that they couldnât see what they were doing, April put her hand in the water, she could feel something evil and dark coming from the depths. She let out her magic like a torrent, little by little the water became clearer, suddenly a monster came out of the water, it was cross-eyed and gave off a black liquid.
Before Sirius did anything, April released her silver flames and turned it into ashes.
_ I think it was that monster that was contaminating the water.
April put her hand in the water again as if nothing had happened, she finished purifying the water and said.
I thought she had finished off all the monsters, apparently I was wrong, there are still some out there causing havoc.
You have changed a lot.
_After everything Iâve been through, it would be strange if I were still the same, donât you think?
April glanced at the well, the water looked clean and crystal clear.
Thatâs it, now letâs go see the sick.
How are you going to explain that youâve purified the water?
_Iâm not going to do it, you take care of that, Iâll go see the sick, so make up a good story and try to help in some way.
April began to walk away, Sirius sighed and said to himself.
He had forgotten that she can be very annoying when she wants to.
April went in the direction that Taren and that old man had taken, halfway along the road a girl met a girl, she looked thin and had dark circles under her eyes, she approached her and with a hoarse and barely audible voice she asked her.
Do you have anything to eat?
April felt her heart break when she saw that girl, she took an apple out of the bag she still carried on her shoulder and asked her.
Do you like apples?
The girl nodded vigorously, April handed her the apple; the girl devoured the apple with a fierce hunger. April stroked her head, used her healing magic and immediately the girlâs face changed.
Is it a magic apple? The girl asked with her mouth full.
I feel better after eating it.
April gave her a soft smile full of tenderness and answered.
Thatâs right, so keep it a secret.
The girl finished eating what she had in her mouth and said.
My entire family is sick, if I give them some, will they get better?
You donât have to do that, Iâll go see them and theyâll be fine soon.
Do you have any more magic apples?
No, but Iâm a healer, I make sick people get well.
The girl jumped for joy, took Aprilâs hand and dragged her to her house, a small cabin, when she entered April saw a man, a woman and two young girls lying on the ground, the girl said to her.
They canât move, theyâre very bad, everyone says theyâll die, but they wonât, right? Youâre going to cure them, right?
April could see the terror of losing her family in the eyes of that girl, she caressed her head and said.
No, they wonât die, theyâll be fine soon, I promise you, Iâll need some water, could you go get it?
Sadly the girl said.
The little water we had is gone and the water in the well is contaminated.
Donât worry about it, the water is no longer contaminated, why donât you go and check it out? The girl took a clay pot and ran to the well to get water.
Once alone, April approached the girlâs family, they looked very bad, they were half dead. She infused her magic into them and immediately restored the color to their faces.
After making sure they would be okay, she left before the girl returned. Taren had gone to find her and said to her.
Your majesty, where were you? I was helping a girl, do you know where the other sick people are? Yes, they all seem to be very bad.
Take me to them.
Taren led April to a barn, there they had all the sick people lying on the ground covered with thin blankets, those who were a little better were tending to those who could not even get up. Taren said.
Everyone in the village has become ill.
April approached a young woman with dark skin, black hair and green eyes. And she asked her.
Is there any medicine you are using to treat them?
We have prepared an herbal tea, but it is not working, they have all gotten worse.
Show me what herbs you have used, I will help you treat them.
That young woman thanked her for her help, shortly after she began to stagger, Taren held her in his arms before she fainted.
- What do I do with her? She
must be exhausted, find a place to lay her down and then go to the well for water, we need to hydrate them.
Okay.
April asked another of the villagers who were helping and asked him the same thing she had asked the young woman who had fainted.
After seeing the herbs they had, when Taren returned with the water, she prepared a chamomile tea, she began to distribute it among the sick, although that was only an excuse to put her hand on them and be able to use her magic without them noticing.
