Ava's POV
The meeting dragged on, and I kept my expression calm, every muscle taut beneath the surface. Rose shot me glances now and then, concern flickering in her eyes.
She knew better than anyone how deep my scars ran where Orion was concerned. But I didnât need pityâI needed resolve.
I pushed through, outlining the next phases of our strategy, countering objections, shutting down doubts with sharp precision. No one would dare question my authority. Not today.
Underneath, though, my thoughts were a storm. Orionâs words played on repeat, his touch still hot on my skin. Heâd always known exactly where to dig in, how to make me bleed.
But this wasnât the past. I wasnât that broken girl anymore; Iâd put myself back together, piece by jagged piece, into something harder and unbreakable.
When the meeting finally ended, the roomâs tension cracked, like a collective exhale. I gave a terse nod, dismissing the advisors.
Even Connor.
The room emptied, and the tension eased down like a receding tide, leaving behind a suffocating stillness. As I let out a breath, I felt a familiar presence step closer. Rose, my assistant and the closest person I have to a best friend, moved with quiet assurance, her eyes sharp with unspoken questions.
"That was⦠intense," Rose said, her voice low but steady. She perched on the edge of the table, crossing her arms. âYou handled it well, considering.â
I gave her a wry smile. âConsidering he tried to ambush me in front of half the board members? Yes, Iâd say I did.â
She tilted her head. âHeâs getting desperate.â
âDesperate people make dangerous moves.â I walked to the tall windows, staring out at the sprawling city below. Night was creeping in, shadows swallowing the light. âI need to know what he and Chloe are planning.â
Roseâs eyes narrowed at the mention of Chloe. âSheâs been quiet lately. Too quiet. That means trouble.â
âExactly,â I agreed, turning back to face her. âOrion doesnât play by chance. Every public spectacle is a calculated step. If heâs making a move this bold, it means heâs got something planned. Maybe I rattled them with my revelation this morning.â
Rose leaned in, her expression thoughtful. âYou know Chloeâs involvement isnât just about power. Itâs personal. She wonât back off, especially now.â
I bit back the surge of frustration that threatened to spill over. âLet her come. Iâm done dancing around her schemes.â
âGood.â Roseâs lips curved into a smile that mirrored my own determination. âBut if they think this proposal was enough to rattle you, they donât know you at all. Whatâs your next move?â
My mind whirred, possibilities and counterplays weaving themselves together. âFirst, we make it clear that Iâm not impressed by public dramas. Iâll double down on my support within the council, remind them of whatâs at stake if we fail to maintain unity. Orion and Chloe thrive on chaos. I wonât give them an inch.â
Rose nodded. âAnd what about the will?â
I tensed at the reminder. Richardâs will, binding me to Orion through a marriage neither of us wanted but both needed to preserve the empireâs fragile balance. âHe stands to lose more than I do if this alliance crumbles,â I said. âHis reputation, his father's legacy and not to forget, his mother's pride⦠Itâs all on the line. I have nothing left to lose.â
âWhich makes you the most dangerous player in the game,â Rose finished, a hint of pride in her voice. âBut we canât underestimate him.â
âWe wonât,â I promised. âLet him believe Iâm cornered. The truth is, Iâve been planning for this. Weâll push back strategically. Show the advisors Iâm the one in control, not him.â
Roseâs eyes glimmered with intrigue. âYouâve got something specific in mind?â
âMore than one thing,â I replied, my voice laced with resolve. âBut Iâll need you to keep tabs on Chloe. Find out where sheâs been, who sheâs meeting with. Anything that might hint at their next move.â
âConsider it done,â Rose said, already reaching for her tablet.
I sighed, exhaustion beginning to creep in, but I wouldnât give in to it. âIâm not going home tonight.â
Roseâs brow furrowed. âAvaââ
âI canât breathe properly under that roof,â I cut in, my voice edged with steel. âNot with Orion and his mistress lurking in the shadows. Let them think Iâm running. Let them think Iâm weak. Itâll make it that much sweeter when they realize how wrong they were.â
Roseâs brow furrowed slightly, concern etched into her features. âWhere will you go?â
âCall The Millerâs Grand Hotel,â I said, my voice firm with resolve. âHave my private suite cleaned and ready. Iâll be staying there for a while.â
Rose nodded, understanding flickering in her eyes. âItâs done. Iâll make sure the staff knows not to breathe a word.â
âGood,â I said, the barest hint of a smile tugging at my lips. The Millerâs Grand Hotel was more than a symbol of the empireâs legacyâRichard made sure that the deed to the hotel is in my name. That was his last gift to me. The pinnacle of his empire.
âLet Orion and Chloe think Iâm retreating. Theyâll never see the storm coming.â
Roseâs gaze softened, just for a moment, as she looked at me. âYou know heâll try to find you.â
âLet him try,â I replied, my voice low and dangerous. âHeâll be playing my game this time.â
She inclined her head, a sign of her unwavering loyalty. âIâll handle everything, Ava.â
I stepped away, already imagining the quiet sanctuary of my suiteâa place where I could breathe, where Orionâs oppressive presence couldnât touch me.
The Millerâs Grand Hotel wasnât just a refuge; it was a reminder of the power I held, of what was at stake, and of what I was determined not to lose.
âThank you, Rose,â I said, softer now. âIâll see you in the morning.â
With that, I left, my footsteps echoing in the now-empty hall. I would not bow. I would not break. The empireâs game was far from over, and I intended to winâno matter what it took.
