Orion
I stood frozen, every excuse Iâd rehearsed vanishing like smoke. Hollyâs eyes were wide with concern, her soft gaze probing. Chloe, a step behind me, schooled her features into a mask of innocence.
âUhâ¦â I swallowed hard. âChloeâshe, um, needed help with some paperwork. For the project. Confidential, you know.â
Hollyâs brow furrowed. âPaperwork? In her room?â
Chloe slid beside me, a practiced smile on her lips. âOrionâs just being thorough. We didnât want to discuss it in the open. Too many prying eyes.â She shot me a look that sent chills down my spine.
Hollyâs face softened a little, but doubt lingered. âYou two always talk in riddles.â She grabbed my hand. âAnyway, Iâve got something for you and Ava. Come on.â
Relieved, I followed her to the living room, my heart hammering in my chest. Chloe trailed behind, her presence like a shadow I couldnât shake.
Ava sat on the couch, her expression unreadable as she scrolled through her phone. She didnât look up as we entered.
Hollyâs eyes sparkled. âYouâll love this.â
She tugged me to sit next to Ava, who shifted slightly but didnât acknowledge me. Chloe lingered near the doorway, arms crossed, her displeasure radiating off her in waves.
Before Holly could continue, she paused, glancing at Chloe. âActually⦠somethingâs been bothering me.â
Chloeâs eyes narrowed. âOh?â
Holly hesitated, then shook her head. âNever mind. Probably just me.â She forced a smile. âOkay! Surprise time!â
She reached into her bag and pulled out two crisp plane tickets, her face glowing with excitement. âI had Rose book you both a honeymoon in Italy! Venice!â Her eyes danced. âYouâll stay at the Hotel Cipriani. Itâs perfect.â
For a moment, silence hung heavy. Avaâs head snapped up, her eyes wide with disbelief. âHolly⦠why?â
I echoed her sentiment, my mind scrambling. âYou did this without telling us?â
Hollyâs smile faltered. âItâs a surprise. I thought⦠after everything, youâd want this.â
Chloeâs voice sliced through the tension. âAnd what exactly is the meaning of this?â Her tone dripped with venom.
Hollyâs eyes flashed. âStay out of this, Chloe. Youâre just an assistant. Why are you even here?â
The room went still. Chloeâs face hardened, her anger a tangible thing. I braced for her retort, but it didnât come. She just crossed her arms tighter, her eyes glinting with something dangerous.
Ava stood, crossing to Holly. âHey, I know you meant well.â She wrapped her sister in a hug, her voice soft. âBut⦠we shouldâve decided together.â
Tears welled in Hollyâs eyes. âI just wanted everything to be perfect. I planned it all, made sure it was flawlessâ¦â
Guilt crashed over me. I couldnât let her think sheâd failed. âHolly,â I forced a smile, âI was already making plans. Thatâs why I was surprised. This is⦠incredible.â I let the false
excitement seep into my voice. âReally.â
Hollyâs face lit up, the hurt evaporating. âYou mean it?â
I nodded, my throat tight. âYeah. Thank you.â
She clapped her hands. âGo pack your bags! You leave tonight!â
Avaâs eyes widened. âTonight? Thatâs too soon. I wanted us to spend Thanksgiving together.â
Holly shook her head. âRose will stay with me. Iâll be fine.â
Ava hesitated, glancing at me. I saw the conflict in her eyes, the reluctance. Chloeâs gaze bored into me, a silent warning. This was spiraling beyond control, and every move felt like a step closer to disaster.
But Hollyâs eyes shone with so much hope. I couldnât crush it.
I forced another smile. âWeâll go.â
Ava sighed, defeat washing over her. âOkay.â
Holly beamed, oblivious to the storm brewing just beneath the surface. Chloe didnât move, her eyes locked on me, promising chaos.
âOh and Chloe?â Holly said abruptly, causing everyone to turn to her direction in sync. âPack your bags too.â

Avaâs POV
While scrolling for updates on my phone, I thought about this morning when I woke up to an empty bed, the chill of his absence almost a relief. I shouldâve known better. Chloeâs arms were always his destination.
This ridiculous game of having him in my room, playing at control, was childish. The sooner Holly went back to the hospital, the sooner Iâd make him leave. I couldnât bear the sight of him.
When I saw the driver pull up, and Holly stepping out, I thought maybe this was for the best. I wanted so badly for Holly to see Orion for the two-timing bastard he was. I almost smiled, imagining her walking in on him and Chloe, the façade shattered.
A honeymoon? Why will Holly even arrange something like this and why didnât Rose inform me?
But then Hollyâs voice pierced through my thoughts: âChloe, pack your bags too.â
I froze. What did she mean? Chloeâs satisfied smirk was a knife twisting in my gut. Holly wouldnâtâshe couldnât be serious. I wanted to ask, to demand answers, but Hollyâs gentle pull on my arm and her smile silenced me. She led me to my room, and I couldnât bring myself to resist.
The room felt stifling as we packed. Disbelief and anger warred within me. Chloeâs face lingered, her smirk never fading. Every rustle of clothing, every zip of the suitcase was a nail driving deeper into my composure.
Then Holly slipped a piece of red fabric into my bag. Lingerie. I stared at it, my hands trembling. âReally, Holly? This?â
She laughed softly, but her eyes held a plea. âItâs your honeymoon, Ava. Make it special.â
âWhy did you tell Chloe to pack? Why would you want her there?â My voice cracked, the betrayal raw.
Hollyâs smile faltered. âTrust me.â She glanced at the door. âYouâll understand.â
Before I could press further, Orion entered the room, his presence filling the space with smugness. Holly excused herself, leaving us alone.
He leaned against the doorframe, his eyes glinting with triumph. âEven your sister likes Chloe enough to invite her. How pathetic do you feel?â
Rage boiled inside me, but I masked it with indifference. âEnjoy it while it lasts,â I whispered, grabbing my bag and heading downstairs.
Chloe was already waiting by the door, her bags packed. Holly hugged me tightly. âHave fun. Donât think about work, okay? Itâs your honeymoon.â
She turned to Orion, her eyes soft. âTake care of my sister. Iâll see you both in three days.â
Holly booked the hotel room for a week but we negotiated with her that it will only be for three days, because of work and the succession ceremony.
As we stepped toward the car, Chloe followed. Hollyâs hand shot out, stopping her. âWhere do you think youâre going?â
Chloe blinked. âWhere else?â
Holly laughed, a sharp, clear sound. âOh, no. Iâm not crazy enough to let an assistant ruin my sisterâs honeymoon.â
Orionâs confusion mirrored Chloeâs. âThen why did you tell her to pack?â
A slow, satisfied smile spread across my face as Chloeâs discomfort grew.
Hollyâs gaze turned cold. âIs she homeless?â
